I know what you mean considering the fact that all the of the games data is all compressed into a bin file. usually in my case i use the smash bros brawl modding method for the wii games so if there are ps2 games out there that have been modded with the same file system as the ddr games it might be easy to figure it out.

One thing I would do is add challenge chart compatibility to some of the songs in the earlier games.

Hmm, that would be interesting to try.

I dont think thats possible for the wii games considering that the past games use a heavily modified ssq file (.ss9 for hp2 and hp3 .ss4 for ddr 2010 and ddr ii) for the other game modes included such as wii balance board and choreograph not to mention the gimmick arrows. The reason i mostly modded ddr ii is mostly because its ss4 files are more accurate to the arcade ssq. So even if i swapped hp2 or onwards files they wont work (I've tried it doesnt matter which difficulty i chose the gameplay looked blank).

I wonder if those features and modifications were cobbled together (in terms of being added to the SSQ format) similarly to how Saxxonpike seems to think freeze arrows were thrown into the SSQ format with DDRMAX (seeing the original SSQ format seems, according to his documents, have originated around 4thMIX).

Is there documentation on the latter SSQ formats (ss9, ss4, etc)? If not, if I can get a hold of some stepdata files, I would Ike to contribute to our understanding of these formats.

It would require modifying the original engine to add these charts backwards and have them retain all the functionality found in DDR2010, DDR II, etc, of course- you are 110% correct. Interesting idea to try though once I've figured out more about the inner workings of the old games.

Side Note: It amazes me how much space is wasted in the average Playstation2 mix's ELF executable with debugging data that could have been stripped out. The Japanese version of DDRMAX has the least amount of space used this way - 208KB, and the U.S version of EXTREME has the most - a whopping 2.9MB worth of space in the ELF executable spent on old debugging data.

As a wii game I use this program called Wii scrubber which allows access to the iso's filesystem. The programs allow you to replace files and when you are finished you then rewrite the iso with the replaced files. (Hope that helps)
Helps a little bit, how did you convert the arcade ssqs to Wii ssqs?

It's pretty straightforward actually since ddr ii's ss4 files are arcade accurate all i do is take the file and rename the extension to .ss4 (note that this only applies to ddr ii only)

Seems like it'd give support to Saxxonpike's theory that the added features were kinda added in hackey sort of ways (freeze in MAX, shock arrows, etc)

"I want to change my username =("
Sadly the opposite way (importing .ss4 files into arcade versions by changing the extension to .ssq) doesn't look as easy Sad

Indeed, Wan, it'd require adding methods for the game to interpret the added step types, and handle those types into the game - I mean, once enough research has been done to allow adding them to the game, it could be done, but IDK how long that would take. Sad
