"Working On: 5thMix BGA bgchanges"
Hi all,

Just sharing an update regarding my Character Select Screen for my SM5 themes. Unfortunately to get it running this way I've had to hard code a little for the characters I have however I'm happy to do so as I've only got a few due to the following reasons:

Each character in my game has:
- Decent standard model that doesn't glitch.
- SN1/SN2 dancer video for when a song from those games is selected.
- SN2 "toasties".
- X -> A dancer video for when a song from those games is selected.
- X -> A "toasties".
- X announcer file for character name.
- Wii dancer video for when a song from those games is selected (This is optional though as some characters like Alice/Baby-Lon weren't featured in the Wii games).

I wanted all of these to be available so I had a uniform experience for each selectable character for the player - as my theme has all of the songs I own from various games and I wanted to give the user the same experience as playing those games within the one game.

So here's where I started:

However, this wasn't what I wanted fully, even though it functioned, I wanted to create something that looked like it would be part of an actual DDR game. Which is why I created this (I turned off my theme music to save on size/copyright strike stuff):

I found the bios for the characters online on DDR Wiki sites and I edited them to sound as normal as possible haha. The cut ins I'm using are the ones that the SN3 team have put up with their theme, specifically in this instance the 100 combo images as I felt that using the coloured images might make the screen too busy.

If anyone has suggestions please let me know.

I'd like to thank dbk2 for putting up with all my inane questions after it took me far too long for the penny to drop regarding coding for SM5. Without this guy I would be no where near as proficient/skilled with Lua coding. If you're trying to code SM5 stuff, definitely give his Lua guide a look http://dguzek.github.io/Lua-For-SM5/.

Also I need to thank the SN3 team for creating those cut ins. They work fantastically in gameplay and personally I think that they really finish off the character select screen well.

Finally I'd like to thank the community as a whole on here, of those of you that I've dealt with, you've all been very helpful and friendly and I really appreciate all the help.

"Just Play Along"
This is pretty sweet! I think the voice clip for the character's names should play when you pick them though, not when you highlpight them, it might get annoying, or instead play it a few seconds after highlighting. More love for the DDR characters!

"BANNED"
I agree with NicholasNRG on the first part. Just like in Mortal Kombat the announcer announces the name of the fighter after it has been selected. other wise it would get rather annoying right away.

Thanks for the feedback guys, yeah I wanted to do that myself actually as when you select something within DDR it says what you selected after you select it. However I've been having trouble getting that to function properly. I'll see what I can come up with, I'm sure I'll be able to work it out.

Keep up the good work, man! Your lua scripting is getting better, although I say that improvement might be resulting in more complicated stuff going on in StepMania, like displaying dancer videos for certain songs (such as those from SuperNOVA 1 & 2, the X series, the HOTTEST PARTY series, DDR 2013 & 2014, and Ace). But then again, that complexity might make your themes look like a real DDR game. Great stuff going on BTW.

Got it sorted shortly after I last posted, I have now changed it to only say the character name when the player selects the character. It is much better actually and you were all right, it was a tad annoying when cycling through characters.

I'll put up a video of my theme progress so far soon. I just need to work out how best to do a video. For instance, what songs to play to show off the most changes, what features to show off etc.
