The final votes for this contest. So who gets points from me for the last time in this contest?

4 pts - L'oiseau qui danse this apparently means "Dancing Bird" in French (according to Google Translate) (Daffa212162)
I love the wackiness throughout the simfile (and confirmed that this song would not benefit me had I got this one). How you laid out the patterning and steps across the charts are fun and simple. Not too ball-sy in the technical aspect.
3 pts - In My Head (ft. PRXZM) (mf32892)
3 pts - We're Going to Ibiza (ledgam3r1279)
2 pts - Celebrate (Snail's House Remix) (CuzcoBlocko)
I like this one. the BPM changes threw me off a few times, and the amount of crossovers and spins got me a bit confused, but I feel like it has enough replay-ability for me to come back to this one.
2 pts - Pokemon World 2000 a.k.a. that one song that finally got stepped... and sacrificed Havana in the process j/k (Feraligatr)
in all seriousness this is really fun to play. the beats, the steps, the replay-ability, it has it all. Seriously, you did justice to Cuzco's skeleton.
1 pt - Let's Dance, Boys! (2nd Climax ver.) (vincentw)
oh boy... it was a tossup between this, Mamma Mia and Drain to take this spot. After much consideration, I went with this one. Not only is it fun, but it also feels really nice and the patterning makes the song interesting (much like a jazz song, the swings feel appropriate here).
HMs
.Mamma Mia (Gameoson) (it's alright. doesn't exactly wow me and it's not really interesting enough in terms of pattern variation)
.Drain (djVERTICAI) (this reminded me of my file of Virtual Virus earlier in this contest. Enough variation in the charts to make it interesting)

TOTALS:
Celebrate (Snail's House Remix) [CuzcoBlocko] - 13
In My Head ft. PRXZM [mf32892] - 10
Pokémon World 2000 [Feraligatr] - 10
We're Going To Ibiza [ledgam3r1279] - 8

A reflection on this contest: This is really the first contest that kind of took me a bit out of my comfort zone, seeing as you're picking a skeleton of someone's (or in this case, bidding on) and making them up to standard. Of course there were some duds here and there, but as long as I have fun then I can look past that. I want to thank everyone for making this contest fun, putting up with my files, and giving out some feedback for me and others to improve. I think it was worth to get out of my comfort zone once in a while. It was a wild ride that has to end eventually. See you guys in the next contest, perhaps sometime in the near future.

Heads up that I might end up voting via keyboard (like Ye Olden Days) because my right leg has been aching for some reason (despite not even touching a pad in 13 days) and I worry playing some of these charts could make it worse... >.<

Regardless I will still continue to judge off of charts that I would want to play on pad (so 6/7/8/9 footers).

BagBak: Standard (7) & Heavy (9)
Celebrate (Snail's House Remix): Standard (7) & Heavy (9)
Contrapasso -paradiso-: Standard (9)
Drain: Standard (6) & Heavy (9)
In My Head ft. PRXZM: Heavy (8) & Challenge (9)
L'oiseau qui danse: Heavy (8)
Let's Dance, Boys! (2nd Climax Ver.): Standard (6) & Heavy (8)
Mamma Mia: Heavy (7) & Challenge (8)
Pokémon World 2000: Edit (9)
Shanshanshantan: Standard (7)
We're Going To Ibiza: Heavy (7) & Challenge (9)

If, for some reason, you really want me to judge off of your 10+ footer or your easier charts looked at, I will be more than happy to try (god bless the music rate option :P).

"Two milkmen go comedy"
A bit of an useless post, but I actually wanted to apologize to mf32892 for not finishing 'Jump Up, Super Star!'

It's simply that I've been hospitalized for putting my feet on 'the ground' too late, and I can help myself but to feel bad about my decisions. Hopefully I can try making a file for this song sometime soon- I've wanted to step it for quite some time...

If I spend an hour or so to make a [..] beautiful standard chart and a fun light chart and it's required for the comp, play it, or at least look it over other wise I don't see the point anymore[.]

"[Art by LilyBreez]"
Sadly I had to play it safe and judge the files by index. I guarantee I'll play these charts on pad when my leg feels better, though.

Anyway:

As I said, I looked at all of the available 6-9 footers as that is currently my skill level on pad. I looked at one 10 because it might be a hard 9, but still a 9.

BagBak (Standard and Heavy): 8.1. Easily the best I've seen from you so far! I don't think b160-176 should have steps though (all difficulties... even beginner, oddly enough), maybe you should've made those mines or a stop. In Heavy, I think small rolls at b150.5 and 151.5 (and any similar parts) instead of notes at b150.75/151.75 would've been a lovely way to accent the quick hi-hat trills.

Contrapasso -paradiso- (Standard): 6.9. Hm... I think it could've followed the song a bit more accurately in some places. For instance, what's wrong with having a note at b49.5? b62's freeze could've stopped at b65, and there could be an added note at b65.5, which is begging to be stepped. b72-74 could be an 8th trill (ULULU) and not harm the 9 rating. b82-88 being flat 2nd notes... really?? I don't think it's right at all. I would've had jumps at b82, b83.5, b85, normal notes at b86 and b87, and leave b88 as is. There's a couple more rhythms that aren't really that accurate across the chart, I can smell them out if you shot me a PM.

This all being said, I don't think it's bad at all.

Drain (Standard and Heavy): 7.5. For what you have to work with, I think it's pretty good. In Standard, why are only b37.667 and 53.667 12ths? You could've added them in b33.667 and 49.667 too and still be fine. I think you made a mistake tracking where your feet are placed in the freezes during b256-284: You WILL have to BS/double step at least one if you don't want to do the following notes at b284 facing backwards. I don't think there's a risk of getting N.Gs, but you should still probably fix it.

In My Head (ft. PRXZM) (Heavy and Challenge): 8.5. Heavy does it a lot of justice! Love what the freezes accent at b93/125. Challenge is also fun and worthy of it's current 2nd place position. I find it very interesting how you decided to follow the bass at b63: Personally I would've followed the voice and drums, and tried to implement the most distinct notes of the bass (so basically what you did in Heavy: I guess in Heavy itself, I would've went for a rhythm that's all 8ths). What's there plays out nicely, so I guess there's no actual complaints. I kind of wish you found a way to accent the background voices in b108-112. Fun footswitches.

L'oiseau qui danse (Heavy): 8.0. I liked it (particularly the beginning freezes + gallops at like b32-35), although there's a couple of things I would've done differently: I don't think what's playing in the song at b79.5-80.5 is enough to warrant an Afronova Walk/half turn. (This can be argued with my file, but every time that happens, there's a very high pitched bell playing, so... there's that?) b140.5 doesn't feel right, I would've placed it on b140.25 or b140.75 instead, leaning towards the former. Same at b156.5. I'm not really comfortable with the rhythm choices at b157-181, but then again if you insist on following that background synth, picking rhythm choices would seem very difficult.

Also, I don't know about anyone else but stops (an 8th note long) where b90, 100.833, 221, and 225.833 are would've added to the fun to me. :P

Let's Dance, Boys! (2nd Climax Ver.) (Standard + Heavy): 7.8. Standard smooth wide. Heavy was kind of... interesting. I'm pretty sure many of the rhythms didn't exactly match the song, but... it still felt fine to play? Not like mf32892's earlier Beyond the Seven file. How did you do it? Personally I'm not too big on 270s (b238) but I guess they're easy to avoid/double step here, so it doesn't matter too much.

Mamma Mia (Heavy + Challenge): 8.3. Heavy was pretty awesome. Seems like a combination of my Chrome Lion's heavy chart and xXMokou98Xx's BABYBABY NO YUME chart and it worked excellently for this song. Challenge didn't disappoint either: My favorite part was the 8th jacks near the end (b196), it flowed very nicely. I find it interesting how both charts end with an RDL crossover.

Pokémon World (Edit): 8.2. You know, if you really wanted to you could've stepped Havana. I would've been fine if this has to wait for another simfile contest. :P I guess I'll have to step Havana myself to make it up for my backup cut being taken over K-Step's. I don't know how I'll get it to work but I picked up 23 points with Mewtwo so I can think I can pull through (as always... ;P)

But hey, since this simfile is here... You did pretty good with it! Totally looks within my skill level for a 9. :3 Although, there are missing notes that I don't think you had to truncate (as you claim) such as:
b77, 78, 79: they would go to the record scratching sounds and I would find 8th jacks during that section pretty fun (see: Mamma Mia's comment above).

b109.5/241.5: "than". I'm actually confused why these notes are missing...

b121, 122, 122.5, 137, 138, 138.5: Would've made all three of these jumps (121 and 137 are correct, 122/.5/138/.5 aren't). The vocals saying "POKEMON" are notably more powerful than the ones before (and after), it would probably better reflect what's going on in the song.

b168: Would've preferred this to be a jump. There's a crash and tubular bell going on there, it would line up with b149 nicely.

b202.5: The voice changes pitch here and I feel this change sticks out significantly.

If you find that any of these wouldn't be a good addition to the chart, I respect that. All of them are added notes so that means I can just ghost-step them if I want to. XP And it also means that there's still room for my own take on the song, which is always a relief (I said this somewhere else... Gameoson pretty much did everything I wanted to for Marble Soda and I have no idea how to restep it. c; ) and especially so if the simfile is still pretty excellent.

Shanshanshantan (Standard + Heavy): 7.8. Staying away from Challenge for obvious reasons. Standard's pretty likable! The only thing I actually didn't like was the DL jump at b296, the notes above it mean hitting this is gonna be awkward. It should be UL (and then the following jumps could be LR, UR, and UD).

I know I said I wouldn't play any of the 10s, but seeing Challenge's notecount (minus jumps) be 1190 while Heavy's is 671 (and Standard's is 456), I somehow doubt that Heavy's actually that hard. And surely enough, it's on the same level as Citrus Monster, owing to those 16th clusters in b296-304. I actually don't know if those 16th gallops during the chorus fit the song very well, after a while they started to feel kind of unnatural. The rest of the chart was good, though.

We're Going To Ibiza! (Heavy + Challenge): 8.0. ...good god that music video. It literally looks like "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer"! ...Well, maybe except for the Conspicious CGI graphics. :P

The provided Heavy chart doesn't disappoint. I like resolvable multiple-choice sections such as b109-116, which is why I'm particularly proud of the Standard 1... oops I mean 7 footer I made for Celebrate. XP I mentioned Nee? and Deep In The Night being inspirations but I guess add Dharma to that list too, I feel as though I didn't take the time to actually examine it when I played it back in Round A and I'm sorry. I think I would've voted for it in a later round since what I look for in a file is _slightly_ different now.

As for Challenge, I think arrows and shock arrows _that_ close together such as 27.750-28 are... a little too tight? I know it's going for having your left foot on the center panel but usually what I do for them is return both of my feet to the center panel (so b23-23.5 is okay), so it seems a little awkward. It's really more on me than on you though. Pretty good chart. The side switches/spins at b146 are pretty crazy. :P

Done? Alrighty. I decided to give points to every file, everything had its good parts and sometimes even more than that.

Thanks for the contest, and special thanks to everyone who bought and stepped my song choices!
- Credits [TikalFan9000]: many many apologies if this song gave you much trouble, and thank you so much for completing the steps!
-
ナチュラルに恋して [CuzcoBlocko]: you sure made this one quite spicy! Kinda gives a whole new dimension to the song, since I originally pictured it as a vanilla track.
-
東京盆踊り2020 (マクドナルド) [mf32892]: I think it's cool that we independently thought of submitting this song in the contest. Sorry if I beat you to it, but at least you get to step it!
- You Make Winter Warm [paperpeach]: glad you enjoyed the song! Andrew Huang is definitely one of my favourite YouTubers / musicians out there, and looks like his music is right up your alley.
- L'oiseau qui danse [Daffa212162]: this is the only song out of the five that I've kept for a while (2016?) and I'm glad it's finally stepped. I can tell it suits you.

"hi"
Crud i forgot to vote.
I was kinda surprised In My Head did as well as it did. Thank you for the support!

I few things to comment for this round.
I liked most of the charts, even if they weren't perfect.
BagBak was really good, in particular. I probably wouldve given points to contrapasso, Let's Dance, We're Going to Ibiza, Mamma Mia, Shanshanshantan and maybe Pokemon world.

I feel like simfile contests are starting to lose their appeal for me tbh. Not quite sure what it is, but I've become less and less involved over time. I think it's because I'd rather be playing DDR A (and that's what I did today instead of calculating votes, lol)

This probably wont be the last time you see me but I probably wont be aiming to participate in every round.

Props to all the participants this year! Interesting to see new steppers rise up the ranks!

Loss of appeal applies to me too, except, instead of having something I'd rather be doing, I just don't have the consistent motivation to participate that I used to. It's this weird thing where I'm like "fk yeah, let's get some charts made!" then I actually start putting arrows down and I'm bored/exhausted 100 steps into a chart. I close StepMania out of frustation with myself that I get tired of it so easily because it's something I like doing, then repeat the cycle. It's complicated.

Some weeks I feel like stepping more and have more confidence in what I step than other weeks, which is why I was so inconsistent with my output in this contest. Might not be that big a deal but I apologize to the people who spent the time cutting their songs and syncing the skeleton, only for me to be lazy and not submit anything. I always feel bad about it even though I doubt anyone looks forward to their submission being stepped by me.

Anyway, I got quite a few keepers from this contest so thanks for making awesome files everyone Smile

Give me about a day and I can upload a .zip of all of the files (specifically in their contest state), I still have all of the mini-zips on my computer. My internet tends to be very slow, and I'm seeing a gigabyte+ upload for this...

I know it's a bit late, but I wanted to thank everyone for participating! It was really fun to host a simfile contest; I really like how this contest played out, and I hope you all did too! If you have any feedback about the contest regarding rules, management, etc., please PM me and I'll certainly address it next year.

I'd like to congratulate Gameoson, Daffa212162, and ledgam3r1279 for placing in the top three! I'd also like to thank CuzcoBlocko for doing an amazing job job keeping the sheets updated. He made hosting a lot easier for me. Big Grin

Plans for next year:
Refine bidding to make files cost more than 1 point usually
Post round winners on thread with fancy graphics
Work out the BEMANI/NO BEMANI rule

I plan on hosting this contest next year, but I would need another host. Would anyone be willing to co-host the next contest? This goes out to anyone, but specifically those who participated in this year's contest as has been a forum member for a while. If you are interested please PM me.

Lastly, if anyone has any new ideas that they think might be better than Simfile Tycoon, I might be willing to let another contest take over.

Well for now, I'll see you all in Battle Royale! Green Grin

Z-I-v Simfile Tycoon 2k17.zip

Here's the link to all 115 songs, plus the two bonus ones in Round A (Take the Gamble and Sky High). darkanine made a pack download in the category, however I don't think it accounts for the songs that were pulled before he generated it such as Feraligatr and chewi's. I tried to make sure everything was intact in their contest form, so do let me know if I messed up somewhere. :P

Oh hi, I haven't done one of these in a while.

... Um... let's see...

Yeah. Simfile Tycoon (2017)! I was admittedly a bit confused by the idea when it was first proposed back when Simfile Shuffle 2016 was ending, but as it turns out, this has been one of my favorite simfile contests I've been a part of to date. I'd say, after actually playing it, it blows Simfile Shuffle out of the water.

And not just the contest format: The quality of the files all throughout this contest has been consistently pretty good! I can count the amount of actual duds there were on two hands, and even then, I've played much worse than anything submitted here. Really, most, if not all of you are pretty good steppers, and if you think otherwise, either by how you performed or how you see your own files, I think this tip applies to everyone: It's never too late to improve.

I've never finished in the top 5 of an entire contest either before, so 4th place overall is pretty awesome (especially with how much I lost in bidding c; ). My big thanks go to Gameoson, ledgam3r1279, Daffa212162, and TikalFan9000 for making it a fun battle for the top 5, and then another to them plus djVERTICAI, K-Step, and paperpeach for helping keep this contest active. You guys are an excellent variety of stepping styles to compete alongside. C:

And then another to Tikal for voting for all 8 of my files. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but... hehehe. >w<

But most of all, thank you to darkanine and hypnoticmarten77 for running this event. None of this would've been possible without you two to help keep things running! Even though it was pretty tough sometimes, going through this entire contest was fun and it marked many personal accomplishments for me. I wrung some pretty unique and colorful simfiles through this event. Hopefully future Simfile Tycoons are just as good or even better than this one.

I will see you all in Battle Royale 2. :D

Song submissions

A 9/10 succession rate!

By now everyone should know that I enjoy Sota Fujimori's work, given thanks to Loodee, rikame, and Gameoson. This is one of his many songs under the SYNTHESIZED5 album. With a beautifully chill and edgy vibe, I knew right away I wanted to send this in. It was successfully stepped: The Heavy was a quirky ITG-style chart and while there were a couple things that made padding it a little rough for me, it's still pretty good and I would recommend it to anyone who happens to be a fan of Loodee/Benpai/rikame's work (and similar files in that community). Thank you for stepping, warpdr!ve!

Even though I had a list of songs with me, I wasn't really sure what to submit that round and I started questioning how steppable some of the songs in that list were. So I decided to skim the album that nightowl originated from. Savant usually doesn't disappoint. And surely enough, once I reached this song I saw awesome charts for it and knew it had to be stepped. Unfortunately, I don't think my cut did the song justice. Nonetheless, it was successfully stepped, again as an technical ITG style chart. I was impressed. It was miles ahead of aura (in my opinion) and was worthy of getting in that wacky 4-way tie for 3rd place. Thank you for stepping once again, warpdr!ve!

Yeah... I know. It's kind of a cheesy song to submit. But I very well know that fun, ITG FA styled charts can be extracted for this song. I don't remember how I found it in the first place, I think I was watching some other Neil Cicierga video (The Prognosis/ABCs) and then this popped up. It was successfully stepped. However, I think the given charts leave quite a bit to be desired. MRace2010 attempted to do something radically different than a standard simfile. The idea was cute and some parts worked but the provided video has some parts that aren't well thought out or hard to read (the ABC section). But hey, it was somehow stepped. So thank you, MRace2010, for putting up with song and sorry for any suffering I might have caused you! ^^;

There was a backup song I submitted that got pulled from the backup pile this same round. More on that in the next section (you may already know why).

A lovely future bass track that I found in this cool Super Monkey Ball compilation back when I was still into that game in March. It immediately entered my list of things to step (or send for Shuffle/Tycoon) and wouldn't you know it, Gameoson knocked it right out of the park. The challenge chart is actually one of my top 5 favorite files. Thank you for stepping, Gameoson!

Jollipop (Simfile Shuffle 2015) and Midnight Drift (Tournament of Immortals 6) were pretty awesome songs with lovely and quirky charts to go with them. So I decided to look through the discography of the artist that made both of them and found this wonderfully quirky song. I saw this becoming a very unique file, so I sent it in, wondering who would pick it up. vincentw did, and oh boy was I right about it being unique. While it wasn't in the way I thought it would be, it's a very good file and I appreciate it being in my skill level for pad. Lots of fun gimmicks/scroll changes and curious patterns all around. Thank you, vincentw!

DDRMAX2 has a lot to do with my interest in DDR, which has coagulated into my interest into 4-panel simfiles today. One of the many things I liked of DDRMAX2 was this interesting, old-school sounding song called "MMORE THAN I NEEDED TO KNOW" I discovered in the beginning of 2011. The instrumental really sold it for me (but the vocals were good to). Three months later, I latered discovered I really liked this artist (Scooch)'s sound across (almost) all of their songs and they became my favorite band.

Seven years later, my interest for them has went down a lot in favor of more electro/complextro artists like Sota/Savant/omniboi but I still enjoy their songs every now in then. This one, their first released song (as I know), has a notable amount of energy and cartoony sounds in it that I felt would make it play well for anyone's stepping style (but maybe not their musical taste) so I thought it'd be a good song to send in.

When Daffa picked it up, I knew this song was in good hands. Unfortunately, it didn't stand the test of time and Daffa later decide it to toss it into the veto bin. It's too bad but I understand how he could start second guessing it. If you ever do manage to step this song in a later contest or in your own category I'll gladly play it. :P

Oh, this was supposed to be my Round D submission, but a mistake on the spreadsheets caused me to have to move it to a later round just to be safe. In retrospect maybe Round E would've given it a chance to be stepped.

One of the only tracks on SYNTHESIZED5 that didn't have a simfile of it at the time (at least, on Zenius). Took the parts from it I liked (I didn't listen to its Bemani cut :P) and sent it in. It went to Daffa once again, and then he threw it into the veto bin once again because upon a second look, he probably found it too confusing.

...only to be stepped anyway because darkanine and hypnoticmarten77 were unable to give him a backup song, and he too wanted to attend every round. Incidentally this makes Round G the only round without any actual vetoes cast. The finished product is not bad at all. Two people said it should follow the song more accurately, and I can see why, but if following the song more accurately would make it more of a pain in the ass to pad, I'm not complaining about what he did here. Thanks for stepping, Daffa212162! (No really, thank you for pulling through this song despite how hard it must've been for you. ^^;)

Similar to omniboi, Virtual Riot has two songs I can think of in recent simfile contests and I like both of them: Aishiteru Yo Ne and With You. I started looking through more of Virtual Riot's songs and found this nice and chill track that would make for a good final submission for anyone in this contest. It was the only song I sent that was assigned to someone by RNG, so seeing it get assigned to mf32892 was kind of interesting. The results were well worth it, though. The given charts are crisp with fun patterns and footswitches. It's definitely deserving of 2nd place, but sadly the simartist couldn't vote in time. Regardless, thank you for stepping, mf32892!

[Round H] - Pokémon World 2000 / Youngstown feat. Nobody's Angel (stepped by Feraligatr)

Childhood favorite. I've loved this song since about 2008. I can't really determine why. Naturally, when I started really getting into simfiles in 2015-2016, I wanted to get it stepped. Unfortunately, this is one of several songs that I just couldn't figure out how to step myself. Sending it in Simfile Shuffle 2016 didn't work either. It was one of 6 songs I sent to the backup pile for this contest during Round D. Feraligatr picked it up in his mad veto spree, albeit he intend to discard it (and the four other songs) to step Havana anyway, so I got convinced there was something about it that made it illegal to step (even though I KNEW it could get fun charts).

Quote: Discord
Cuzco - 01/31/2018
Honestly at this point if anyone can step Pokémon World 2000 I would +5 it.

Ampharos - 01/31/2018
Did no one step it?

Cuzco - 01/31/2018
Not as far as Zenius goes.

Lo and behold, I woke up Sunday to find it there. Wow. :P And especially wow since it was good enough to snatch Feraligatr one last gold medal before the contest concluded. Awesome. Seeing this song get 1st place after all of that trouble makes me pretty happy. Thank you for stepping, Feraligatr!

Maybe K-Step will see Havana stepped in the near future.

Oh, and the 5 other songs I sent to the backup pile were Beautiful Morning (Spanish Fly Club Version) by Ace of Base, Disco Prince by Kenji Ninuma, Etoule Pucoratte! by LocoRoco All Stars, Legacy by Savant, and Main Street Electrical Parade (HOUSE NATION EDIT) by Shinichi Osawa (which was another song that failed to get stepped in Simifle Shuffle). Seeing as though names for the backup files are immediately revealed, I think giving this information is okay. :P

Simfiles

Other songs I considered stepping: Mother Ship, Psychic, Dorito Dust, BABYBABY NO YUME, Take the Gamble

(bold means I wanted that song more than this one)

Simfile #30.

So after my previous 4 simfiles in the past two contests didn't really do that well (at least... I don't think), people began to convince me that hard charts were not fun. I was determined to fix this with a file that didn't try to step every key note in the song, and I thought this lovely song would be the perfect match for that goal. It's Tomosuke. What can go wrong?

A lot. A lot went wrong here. A majority of the file followed the bass, sometimes implementing the kick drum and certain other insturments, at one point the hi-hat. Sounds that were supporting roles of the song but not the LEADING role (such as the vocals). The result was that the file was accused of "invented rhythms" and ended up getting only three points (all +1s), which is... horrible. The last time I got three points was with a joke mashup song, and in that case I half-assed the charts. But this one, I tried to make work. I really, really did. I guess some songs simply aren't made for pad charts. /_\

Of course, three is better than zero, or even two. So thank you to the three people who somehow found enjoyment out of it and gave it points, and for preventing my self-esteem from plummeting further. <:3

Other songs I considered stepping: FUN, Bad Cycle, Burnt Rice, Pistols & Hearts (The Bloody Beetroots Remix), Slowly but Surely, Back at 'Em, Diggy, Air

Simfile #31.

Yeah, you see Pistols & Hearts up there? That song was what I wanted. I thought rhythm choices there would be easy to grab and not result in a tough file. However the more I listened to it, the less confident I really was in it and I decided to look for another song to avoid another Kocchi from happening.

I can't remember what was going through my mind when I placed more money on Plastic Love, to be honest. Ideally I would've tried to snipe any of the other songs listed above. Especially once I actually went to step this song: I had no ideas for the heavy chart at all and I discovered after a while the file wasn't exactly synced, so that sapped a bunch of time from me. Once I was actually done syncing it, I managed to complete the lower difficulties for the file. There's still the higher difficulties. But then while working on the heavy chart, someone alerts me the deadline is in less than 30 minutes. How much do I have? Only about 20% of the song.

I'm not gonna lie, I was legitimately convinced I was heading nowhere with simfiles at that point. I was taking way too long on charts that became doomed halfway in, the pay-off for finishing them wasn't strong, I would rather have spent that time on other things, I shouldn't do something I don't enjoy, and making simfiles was pretty much heading in that direction. I wanted to just quit the contest and Stepmania as a whole there and then.

On the other hand, I took the time to sync it and I had charts completed that I didn't want to go to waste. No one said there has to be a chart in the heavy/challenge slot. So I submitted it anyway. Beginner-Standard only. The song submitter likes to judge files off of lower difficulties and enjoys easier charts so I knew at least someone had a chance of enjoying what was there.

And surely enough, he voted for it. But then also seven other people liked it, some of them liking it a lot, and shot it up to a surprising 22 points.

Even though it didn't place like three of my other files here did, this file is an accomplishment to me (especially because I didn't have a lot of luck with anything below an 8 footer) and may very well have saved my run in the contest. So thank you for sending this in, Nezemarth!

Other songs I considered stepping: Beyond the Seven, ECHO (Yunosuke Remix), Youth Blood (12th Planet & Flinch Remix), Glimmer, Wake Up, Ain't All Bad, Magnet

Simfile #32.

I had this complete on my computer for a while, but I didn't imagine I would be able to use it for Simfile Tycoon of all things. The songs I wanted were crazy expensive so I at first tried to go with Youth Blood. But, because I started doubting my drafts for the song and didn't know how else I could step it, I went out with a veto (again). I dropped this into the back-up pile during Round B's stepping phase, so I had a 1/8th chance of getting it. It's more likely than you'd think, it seems.

Anyway, I really love to play this on pad, so I thought it could get just as much points as Plastic Love. It ended up around the middle with only 13 points (and after such a great start, it was once in 4th place!!). Hmm... Fair enough. It is a little on the vanilla side of my files, and everything above it stood out in some kind of way, whether it'd be memorable patterns, better-constructed steps, or being supremely unique (Credits). But it still made it to the blue zone, so I think it performed just fine. Thanks for the +5, K-Step. :3

Other songs I considered stepping: The Revenge of Mister Foxsky, The Right Thing, Tonight Again, Last Rebirth, Kakkowarui I love you!, CACTUS

Simfile #33.

This was one of only three songs I was really in love with in Round D's line-up. I could've gotten Foxsky for pretty much free, but by the end of the auctioning, I decided this one is the song I must step. The heavy chart is basically a shock arrow chart if singular shock arrows were a thing. I use a technique where I intend for the motion of the player's foot lifting from an arrow to hit another arrow to follow notes that aren't in the chart otherwise (such as b87.5 and 103.5), I thought it was interesting. And of course I had to add gimmicks to this one. :P It did pretty well and actually got points from a majority of the voters for once.

I had a much more technical challenge chart in the works, but I pulled a Plastic Love and jossed it because I was low on time and also I thought maybe it would milk too much from the song. I intended on coming back to it eventually but now I don't really think it's necessary. Especially since I succeeding in doing what I wanted to do for that challenge chart in another song below.

Other songs I considered stepping: ABXY

Simfile #34.

This was one of only five songs I COULD be in love with (depending on my music taste).

Uh... I literally only listened to the first five songs. A vacation to Florida made it hard to keep up with Simfile Tycoon's auctioning. X_X Incidentally, this was the reason Gameoson ended up stepping We Are Number One. I placed a whopping 13 on this minutes before the deadline. :P I might've let him have this song if I knew what the other songs sounded like at the time.

Anyway, this one was admittedly uploaded in a hurry and while I think it's good, I didn't make it the best file it could be. I'm surprised I even managed to upload it at all, usually I need the full week to complete a Tycoon file. It was my first file here to make it to the podium (tying with ledgam3r) despite thinking it wouldn't, so that was pretty cool. Starting here, my files start to have much harder and tehcnically accurate charts as, by this point, I think I have enough (actually good) easier submissions.

Rest assured, I gave it a fine-toothed comb earlier this month and I'll upload it to my category soon with graphics and lower difficulties this time. And its interesting BOFU2017 video, if you've seen it.

Other songs I considered stepping: Natsu no Hi no Labyrinth (nyankobrq remix), Most Extreme Sick Muse, You Make Winter Warm, MTC (Different Heaven Remix)

Simfile #35.

Round F was another tough round to find a song I'd like. If I remember, I was going to get assigned Bad Influences but then I thought maybe I could successfully pick up this song for much less than ESM. Once that happened, I saw this as a fun opportunity to experiment with 1.5x speedups (or 0.75x slowdowns) again after a year of not doing that in a file. I also challenged myself to not use any mines for this one since that was what my four previous consequtive files did. This would nicely fit in with the newer DDR releases. It's my most voted for file, however it didn't make the podium this time. That's fair enough, the three files that were above me in Round F were pretty masterfully constructed in their own way. Thanks for the awesome song again (Flowlight), Telperion. :3

Oh yeah, also I really love how the graphics for this one came out.

Other songs I considered stepping: Time Circuits, Too Funky, The Government Knows, Immortal

Simfile #36.

Oh boy, what do we have here? A week where there were really only three songs I could claim because everyone else got to the songs I had more confidence in stepping. And of course, those three songs seemed tough as nails to step for me. This, Like A Man, and the Z-I-v Summer Contest 2017 medley. I had considerably less confidence in the other two, so rather than lose another $10 for a song I wanted, I saw this as good middle ground and it allowed me to actually gain something in the auctioning this time.

I really had to dig deep for some parts of the 10 here. (The 8 was easier and quicker to step.) In particular, the whole section with the 16th triplets. I didn't want it to be difficulty-spikey compared to the rest of the chart, but I didn't really want to change what I had before that part as I really love some of the pattern combos I came of with in the rest of the chart. It was a relief when I was finally done with it and uploaded it, but then what would happen then? It could be anything at that point...

A first place medal, of course. Somehow the small week and strange line-up of songs and how they were stepped worked in my favor, so I was happy to see my work pay off. I've uploaded it to my category with full difficulties this time, so if you can't do the 8, there's a 3, 5, and 7 to fall back on. Thanks for sending this, Daffa!

Other songs I considered stepping: L'oiseau qui danse, Mamma Mia, ugh, Havana

Simfile #37. The last here and the latest one.

This is the file I mentioned that is basically the challenge chart I wanted to make for Natural ni Koishite. I didn't listen to any of the songs until darkanine actually updated the bids (for a good several days, it was totally blank). I remember someone else's name being attached to this song, so I was surprised when I ended up getting it for free.

Seeing as though I got 1st place with CITRUS MONSTER and made the podium again in another week, I decided to just step what I like instead of considering the tastes of other people too much. I _did_ have some specific inspirations in mind when I made the file, though. Those being ledgam3r1279's wacky freestyle patterns (especially on Standard) and the twisty nature of two songs Gameoson stepped, Porta Vista and Deep in the Night. To be honest, I think I subconsciously had Spork! in mind for the heavy chart too, I sent it to him a few days ago and really liked it. With the happy nature of the song right down to it's title, it's a fitting song as my final submission and for managing to complete the all-rounds goal I've been trying to get since Simfile Shuffle 2015. :3

Also again, I really like the graphics for this one. Although perhaps the artist text is a little small and harder to read in smaller resolutions... hmm.

Top 20 favorite files

As I said earlier, the number of files I thought were NOT good would probably be in the single digits. So many files in here were pretty good! Which ones are better than good, though?

#1: Kali 47 [warpdr!ve]. This is the best file I've played from you, it does the given cut a lot of justice and I appreciate it actually being in my pad skill.

#2: marble soda [Gameoson]. Absolute perfection with the mines, 24ths, and patterns. Basically everything I wanted to do for this song (so now re-stepping it for my category will be tough, haha).

#3: Deja Vu [Feraligatr]. The fun, technical goodness I've come to expect from Feraligatr. Both charts are good, and padding the heavy chart was surprisingly a lot of fun. How do you do it, anyway?

#4: Ikukan Gimmick [Birdwards]. I love how creative you get with your files, and this one is no exception. So much twisty fun to be had here.

#5: Fun [Feraligatr]. Another quirky success by Feraligatr! And the four-note footswitches work very well here. I just wish that one 32nd stream near the middle of the file was fixed (it should be 24ths).

#6: Sugar Glider [vincentw]. I gotta say, you did surprisingly well in creating a unique 7 of all things. Lots of free-style potential for your charts here. :3

#7: In My Head (ft. PRXZM) [mf32892]. The best file I've seen from you in this contest, you made this song really shine in both difficulties!

#8: We Are Number One [Gameoson]. Well, for something "half-assed" it's definitely memorable and kinda fun. :P I kinda hoped you'd be able to make lower difficulties for it, but I guess I understand why you don't want to spend so much time with this song.

#9: Mamma Mia [Gameoson]. I'm not sure why this failed to make it to the blue zone, because I simply can't find anything to complain about here, it's pretty fun.

#10: HAI HAI HAI [Nezemarth]. Fun gallop and roundy patterns similar to my files helped me really enjoy this one. Maybe the LDRLRDL patterns weren't exactly fitting, but that's a nitpick.

#11: Immortal [Gameoson]. This really does make for a lovely companion file to CITRUS MONSTER. :3

#12: Time Circuits [paperpeach]. I can't really describe it, for some reason I really like playing through this one on pad. Maybe it has to do with the vanilla-nature of this chart matching the chill song. I just think it works.

#13: Pokémon World 2000 [Feraligatr]. Another success by Feraligatr!

#14: Psychic [Gameoson]. Gameoson stepping any song choice from xXMokou98Xx usually turns out pretty good. I prefer the heavy chart over the challenge chart a bit.

#15: Nee? [Nezemarth]. The patterns and gimmicks in both heavy and challenge are awesome. You really made this song work!

#16: Slowly But Surely [Nezemarth]. I love charts that start off easy and get harder as they go on. While there are a handful of things I would've changed about this chart upon closer inspection, I still really enjoyed padding it.

#17: Labyrinth of a Summer Day (nyankobrq remix) [vincentw]. One of the quirker charts and songs on this list.

#18: Pure Lily of a Timeless Romance [vincentw]. The whole heavy chart is stepped in a rather interesting way, but it makes for a lovely experience on pad.

#19: The Only Way Is Up [HealingDMax300]. Definitely one of your better files! The shock arrows in challenge are very... interesting. I suspect it would bring the chart's rating to a 7 because of how close together they are to jumps. But no matter. It's still pretty good.

#20: CACTUS [Daffa212162]. Fun gallopy 12th-note goodness to a pretty good K-Pop track, what can go wrong?

Honorable mentions:

*KISS CANDY FLAVOR [Daffa212162]. I think the challenge chart squeezes a tiny bit too much out of the song after giving it a second shot. Or maybe it's just me. The heavy chart, however, makes for a lovely substitute for the time being.
*DNA [Nezemarth]. I wish this song was a bit better, it's begging for a drop (think of my Valkyrie file). But for what Saulius provided, you did pretty well, regardless of what only 5 points suggests.
*Credits [TikalFan9000]. The challenge chart is really, really impressive, but unfortunately I just can't do it on pad. :c I kind of wish you found a way to carry the cool mine parts and laterals into the heavy chart..
*Grow Up [vincentw]. I think some of the patterns are a bit weird and extreme (the 16th footswitches), but others are pretty clever and memorable. And of course, the quirky stops.
*The Difference Between Us and the Aliens [Daffa212162]. I really enjoyed this one back when voting for Round F was going on. Upon a second play, it probably could've followed the song a bit more accurately with the rhythm choices, but as a whole it's a good effort.
