Guide to Writing and Receiving Critiques

And the people that aren't don't deserved to be critiqued, they deserved to be ridiculed instead.

It's not a brave thing to have people talk about your stuff, and if you can't take it well in this day and age you probably shouldn't be on the internet in the first place. Far too dangerous for you, what with different opinions and that.

I feel like in this context it makes sense. Some people mistake critique for a personal attack, and it doesn't always feel good.

And stuff like that usually happens when people give unwelcome critiques to works of others. It's always important for the critic to have at least an invitation to critique someone else's work prior to doing so. For example, someone that introduced a simfile category of their own would need to have asked for feedback or stated that any critique and suggestions are welcome. Writing a critique on a simfile contest is assumed perfectly welcome, since every entrant would have had to enter with the assumption of receiving feedback on their work.

When people go out and start publicly commenting on works done by users who never requested such feedback, that is when constructive criticism starts to feel more like a personal attack.

Of course, no simfile artist should ever ask for feedback if they aren't prepared to accept what may sound to them like a few harsh words albeit with good intent.

Would also help if the critique was consistant between people so I actually felt like it was a real issue and not just a nitpick/"did you even play" thing. One person has no complaints other than the first half of the file not being all that engaging, but the sync drags it down to a 2.0/10. Another person says the sync is 9/10. What do.

It's important to understand that writing a critique is also a skillset, just as writing a simfile is. Similarly, some people are more experienced and skilled at it than others. I would consider offering to provide feedback to the critics on the critiques themselves in that case, and if they accept, I would state what parts of them were helpful to me and what the critic could do to write what I think may have been a more useful critique.

Well at that point, I think it would be useful to give criticism on such critiques of reviews. That way people could tell whether or not their critiques of critiques were helpful or not. These critiques of critiques of critiques would give detail on whether or not it was helpful to know whether or not your critiques were helpful.

This is an old message but I think my response might be helpful. In this case your sync is identified as a problem by two different users, but one just gives it more weight. They think it's more important for a file to be on-sync, so they'll be more likely to take points away when it's not. Therefore, they took away 8 points. The other person doesn't care as much about files being on-sync, so they just took 1 point away and gave it 9/10.

At the end of the day, the numerical value doesn't hold much weight and is more-or-less arbitrary. There's no inherent objective quality of a simfile.
