[WIP] Pop'n Mania Themes

Hello friends, some time ago I've remember that I wanna make some Pop'n related theme for stepmania, I haven't played it before, but their interfaces are so flashy, remembering some threads, there's not a lot of Pop'n themes interfaces, and some are older, from the Stepmania 3.X series. Well, taking some considerations, and watching some gameplays I've decided to create a Pop'n related theme, or a series, deppending my fre time

I just want to make some functional Pop'n inspired themes to play in Stepmania, I'm not a huge fan and I don't have any game to rip, or enough space to download a game, also the enough time to play and unlock, rip or dump, I've decided to do the easy way.

I will create them using the resources found in their official websites, for the sounds I've used som mix of pop'n mania 3.X theme, and some Wii rips (Wii games are easier to rip) the main idea like the older DDR interfaces is to create a base skin that supports the basic gaming, and take advantage of the Stepmania5 features.

- What I've done?
I've been 2 days creating a basic theme, based on the Eclale site, I have an almost full skinned set, I will not explain so much, because I will post some shots to check it out, and I will to describe later the things that I need to.






As we can see, I've done almost the basics of a regular pop'n game, the characters are static, and are not changing with the gameplay, but I've implemented the placeholder to check how to implement it in the future.

- What I need?
As I'm not a Pop'n player, I'm not informed about the song and stage options, like the list of speedmods, the names, etc. I know that some mods are similar to DDR games, but I have not idea, at this moment the theme has the SM5 fallback options. I've seen in some videos that some songs have some special backgrounds in the notefield and the characters boxes, and some noteskins different from the regular, any primary information that I can get would be better to get a nice game experience in the simulation. Also if someone could help sharing rips from UI effects, announcers, or sprites, would be nice.

I've been asking for character sprites since 2010 for my pop'n system that even loads pop'n characters from simfiles, as in full animated ones , no one as them ;_;

I've splitted some full sets of gifs (exactly 3) that I've found in spritesheets just to test, I could share them if you like. Is not the best, but is something to start

They have 8 states, the card and the banner with the character name as you can see it here, this is one of the folders that I have:


Mine idea is to create a PopnCharacters folder, to load them from there and make a collection usable by any theme.

Oh my good-golly-gosh, this looks absolutely amazing! I can't wait until this is finished, because when I get Stepmania I'll surely download this!

Even though I've never played Pop'n Music before, this is very interesting.

How wonderful it looks! I love the characters. It is absolutely amazing. How can I add characters' GIFs for this? I'd want to put cute characters I like in it, like Alt and Whip.

Yes, the idea is to create the base, and later create a character collection, is hard because there is no much pop'n resources and most of them are incomplete I think I could create a tutorial later on how to create characters, for those that like to create customs or add a missing character there is another video, with the characters that you've mentioned and the graduis noteskins!

Thanks to all for the feedback, today I've implemented the Full Combo splash! I will tune some of the Pop'n song options and release the first version to test it.


I will divide the gameplay screen graphics to add some things, like special bg's and overlays for some official songs, I love games customization I'll be back again with more special contents

Actually, The characters should move and have good, great, FEVER, Win, FEVER Win, miss and Lose animations!
I'm working on characters for the original Step'n Music and maybe a theme too

The characters do move, but they do not have their animations for each judgement - just the neutral animation.

The Characters should be like characters, not graphics that you need to change to play different characters!
The Characters needs to be in the Characters folder, just like in the actual Step'n Music!

i have a super secret project im working really hard to complete this year, uploading a test pic from the pop'n cab,
p.s the backgrounds have weather animation and the sun and moon rising , along with the waves of the ocean and seagulls etc..
it will also be for PC and jamma cab/popncab

but please keep it a secret, as i want to release the free programs here, and possibly send 1 or 2 arcade cabs to zeniusivanisher forum members.... Im an artist and bemani fan, so its got to be 100% perfect, and easy to play for non computer users as well,, the forums here and community have helped me so much,karma giving it back

hopefully i can round up a coder or two on the forums for help as i am in the creative graphics and sound part, not programming..
also..since i have produced music for years, ive taken on the crazy slow painful work of making my own PMS files to go along with this {mix) it sounds easy , but im actually creating a nice song and characters and sounds is tedious,
design and make 60 sprite sheets charcaters , compose a cool nice sounding song...then trasnfer each wav into a pms file..is going SO SLOWWW

Also forgot to tell this,
The Step'n Music characters works on the actual Stepmania too
Just play as a solo single so you don't get mad that the character is not showing you some notes

Hey MadkaT, I had a Pop'n project I was working on for SM5 a while ago (before the whole new SM5 overhaul happened...I have no idea what's going on with that yet, I have yet to familiarise myself with it). While I'm not getting back into the whole theming side of things just yet, I can PM you the theme/noteskin files that I was working on if you like

I was thinking in a custom way to do it, because you only could select your character, but what will happen to the other player? Also, some characters, have notefield attacks. I have the step'n music, but the characters are not working, you could choose one, but is not appearing, I doubt they could work, because they are make with the old bganimations, and SM5 is not compatible with that. Could you confirm that info? Thanks!

I was busy with some DDRA bug fixes, but I will come back with this project soon I've made the twinbee bells noteskin, and added some elements to the gameplay.



Bump it up, I've got working and it has evolved into this.

Oh my goodness, is there any sort of a release? I've been looking for ages for something that works on Stepmania 5, and that looks so good. Not only that, but you posted like, just an hour ago, where everywhere else I looked, and found any trace of anything was in 20016 or earlier.
