Today was my first time playing Pop'n. At first I was struggling with 15, but after applying the beatmania mod to indicators I was beating 25-30 easily, yet failing miserably in the same songs without the mod.
Has it happend to anyone else?

Yeah, I'm the same way. I've played a lot of IIDX before going to pop'n music, so I'm used to the "white-blue-white-blue-white-blue-white" setup. So, when I started to play pop'n, it became kind of ridiculously tough for me to figure out that "yellow and blue are on the top, the rest are on the bottom" with the pop-kuns coming at me at more than 300 BPM. Putting BEAT-POP on eliminates a lot of confusion.

I actually find the reverse to be true. It took me a while to get used to all the different pop-kun colors, but it was a hell of a lot easier than trying to learn IIDX placement (which still messes me up). Guess it depends on which was your first game - I started on pop'n. Now that I'm used to all five colors, I'm extremely dependent on them; I can play with noteskin ojamas surprisingly well (ずっとQMA woo) but anything that flattens the five colors to two still confuses me.

beatmania was my first game but I just can't play with BEAT-POP... at least not hard stuff. Much like Telperion mentioned, I'm dependent (and used) to see the white/red/blue/yellow/green to actually play pop'n.
I can play decently with (some) CHARA-POPs, though.

I learned how to hit the ending of The Smile of You [EX] after accidentally activating CHARA-POP... which essentially flattens the 5 colors to two. I don't really know though, I haven't tried beating harder songs with CHARA/BEAT-POP.

Guess it depends on which was your first game - I started on pop'n. Now that I'm used to all five colors,,,....!!!!
