I agree with your idea but I doubt everyone here knows how to use GitHub.

That's fair. Do you have an alternative in mind, though? If you do, please share. I'd love to have an easier way to allow people to submit BG Scripts in an organized manner, but currently GitHub is the only method (that I'm familiar with, at least) that can do such a thing.

I think you could try to help people to upload the scripts to the repo, not all use Github and not all wanna learn to do it, instead of creating a folder per user, use a similar structure like the simfiles in here, and put the name of the user in the txt, for example, Arcade/DDR 1st/Butterfly/UM3GreenGhost.txt that makes possible to have different versions of the same song, and the user could choose. Following that structure is easier to create a tool that can patch the sm to include/replace the bganim.

Oops, I thought I had already done that. As it turns out, though, I apparently forgot to actually change the folder structure to match the guidelines I posted. That's my bad.

I'm also going to restructure the file names to include both the video sets and the script source, as such:

Script Source (Video Set) {Script Author}

So, for the examples of my Butterfly script and DarkFeline's LOGICAL DASH script on the first post, the paths would be, respectively:
Quote
Arcade/Dance Dance Revolution (AC) (Japan)/Butterfly/ULTRAMIX3 (ULTRAMIX3) {GreenGhost21}.txt
Arcade/DanceDanceRevolution SuperNOVA (AC) (International)/LOGICAL DASH/DDRMAX2 JP CS (MAX-EXTREME) {DarkFeline}.txt

I will shortly upload the second example script, with timing fixes to work with the latest version of the ZIv Simfile. If DarkFeline would like me to take it down, I will do so.

In the meantime, though, would this structure work well enough? Or should there be further changes?

I dunno where to share this but I thought this might interest you. FFmpeg has implemented support for .IPU PS2 video files on their latest release and that means SuperNOVA movies from all three regions are now able to be decoded more easily. And so I've converted them to H.264 using 2-pass while keeping the quality from the original files (yes, any noise or blockiness was already there). I apologise if they're somewhat large:

https://mega.nz/folder/XcsUXIiJ#fdCJSRB15Mh-wtpdAt_ovQ
Dupes across regions like Xepher and murmur twins are only included in SN US, since they use the exact same files.

I also recreated some of the scripts in SN style (black background before video starts) using those movies:
- Scripts only: https://mega.nz/folder/ucsxxQ5L#ggT8dZCJ34V5RMLnj1hZUA
- Scripts + movies: https://mega.nz/folder/yQslkKjR#8jaz3L_8_A5BY-KP_f5TjA

Some things I've found about SN movies:
- They seem to be encoded at 25 fps at a slower speed, and sped up x1.2 in-game. Not sure if it's FFmpeg or if the files are just like that, however. I've corrected this in my converts and they'll play at 30 fps, normal speed.
- They seem to have higher bitrates than EX2/Str!ke/Max and even SN2 movies and, despite this, the quality is pretty subpar in comparison. Lots of noise esp. in animated backgrounds, for example (ex. DoLL). If you can grab a movie from other version, I'd say you just stick to it.

All the while; I was playing my songs and noticed that the original Sana Morette Ne Ente, which was on 5th/Max2/Extreme was curiously lacking a video script in the style of Max/Extreme. Anybody got one?

Edit: Found 1 I can use.

I haven't received many responses on my GitHub page for BG scripts/resources. Is it not visible enough? (Should I perhaps make my own topic for higher visibility?) Or is it that it's too difficult to respond to? (Should I leave my Discord contact info here?)

Regardless, I feel like I'll get more visibility by posting my ULTRAMIX/UNIVERSE-series scripts here.

These scripts use the videos from their own games, which I have uploaded to my Google Drive, as well as my MEGA account just in case some people need an alternative download source.

Place the folders in the RandomMovies folder, and you're good to go!

Here's the scripts thus far:

Oh WOW! How did I over look this for a week. Thanks a lot. I did notice 'A" and 'Still In My Heart (MONO MIX)' might be off sync with the official simfiles, but that can be corrected with a program.

Songs with desire BGAs (yeah I'm giving my full list of extreme desire. I do eventually want all):
888
After all (Svenson & Gielen Remix Edit)
Colors (Midihead's Sapphire Mix)
DREAM A DREAM (MIAMI BOOTY MIX)
Dual Love
HACK
Giudecca
Insainer
Insainer (L.E.D. Punishment Mix)
MAXIMIZER
OUTER LIMITS (Akira Ishihara remix)
PARANOiA Survivor MAX
Return of the Toe Jam
SOMETHING WONDERFUL (both ultramix and universe versions)

Just double-checked (since I've changed the offsets of some songs in my own files in the past), and the BGs are in fact synced properly. If you'd like to see for yourself, look up some gameplay on YouTube. If they seem off-sync, then that's because they seemed so in the original games.

Holy moley, that's a lot of songs. Fair warning, this might take a while to get done (especially since I have other priorities at the moment).

Also, for the record, I could share the Python script that I used to extract the BG script data from the game files (though you'll need to supply your own copy of the games you want to extract from) if you want to try your hand at making them yourself.

Honestly, I'd prefer to share the raw scripts, but I don't want to get caught up in any potential legal issues (involving redistributing game files), so sharing the Python script I made to do the job automatically is the next best thing I could offer.

Regardless, I made a script from UNIVERSE2. Enjoy!

That I don't mind since I know enough python to convert the scripts that I ripped myself (the ULTRAMIX DLCs) and place them into your GItHub. That way we have two people working on it.

I just uploaded the script(s) to my GitHub, along with instructions. Fair warning: the instructions are kind of lengthy.

No BG scripts today, sadly. I spent all my time writing the instructions for the extraction scripts.

EDIT: I forgot to ask...

Was there a specific program you had in mind? I've just been using formulas in a spreadsheet to fix the sync for scripts, but it's very clunky. If you have a better solution, I'd love to hear it.

"My paw is incompurrable!"
Koibito from DDR Universe (This is inaccurate. Feel free to fix. I felt like scripting this because the song is adorable, if the background is any indication)

Koibito from DDR Universe (This is inaccurate. Feel free to fix. I felt like scripting this because the song is adorable, if the background is any indication)

(BG Script)

Where are you taking the names of the Universe movies from? They don't seem to be named like the videos posted earlier in this thread?...

Oh yeah, I remember that thread. For what it's worth, though, the videos I'm using in my scripts, I got from this post on page 18 of this thread.

Speaking of scripts...

Friendly reminder of how to use these properly:

These scripts use the videos from their own games, which I have uploaded to my Google Drive, as well as my MEGA account just in case some people need an alternative download source.

Place the folders in the RandomMovies folder, and you're good to go!

Also: A while back I found a pack of ULTRAMIX 2 simfiles, BG Scripts included, posted on YouTube by a user named Jed. The link is posted in his various videos showcasing the work he's done.

I'm not going to post the link here, for the record, because I don't want to take away any potential views, since I don't know how much he cares about how many views his videos have.

However, somewhere down the line, I will attempt to copy the scripts alone to ZIv's versions of the ULTRAMIX 2 simfiles, since I've noticed that they feel like Jed's simfiles are synced differently versus their equivalents from ZIv. Not sure when that will be, considering how little I've done so far, but it's something I'd like to do, given time.

One last thing: I am still hoping to figure out a good way to share the ULTRAMIX- & UNIVERSE-series files containing the scripts. Could anyone from the staff at ZIv perhaps weigh in on how I could do this while staying within the rules of this forum?

"Makin' my rounds. Happy"
Hey folks, something just occurred to me to ask. Has anyone come up with a script/program that can be used to fix bgscript entries?

As an example, a LOT of the scripts I did waaaaaay back in the day when I was the primary one doing them in 2003 are still at the start value that was used back then, before ZiV started using .ogg for audio and resyncing. Like back then, the bgchange may have started at 15.750, but now starts at 25.750 or 31.750 (as an example).

I'm thinking of updating all my simfiles finally to keep them current with what's on ZiV, and instead of going through 700+ simfiles I have and be at risk of human error with manually correcting each bgchange value one by one and screw it up. Here's an example like where you could put in the bgchange for 321 STARS:

#BGCHANGES:21.750=tv1.avi=2.250=1=0=1,
25.750=tv1r.avi=2.250=0=0=1,
29.750=tv1.avi=2.250=0=1=1,
33.750=tv1r.avi=2.250=0=1=1,
37.750=tv1.avi=2.250=0=1=1,
39.750=kangaroo1f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
40.750=kangaroo2f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
41.750=kangaroo4f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
42.750=kangaroo5f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
43.750=kangaroo1f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
44.750=kangaroo2f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
45.750=kangaroo4f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
46.750=kangaroo5f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
47.750=kangaroo1a.avi=1.000=0=0=1,
51.750=kangaroo3f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
52.750=kangaroo2f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
53.750=kangaroo1f.png=1.000=0=0=1,
.....

This is the old one I have where it starts at 21.750. But in the updated script, the bgchange starts at 25.750, meaning each next entry needs to go up by 4.
I was just curious if anyone had thought of one, or if one existed to make this process easier. Otherwise, if I gotta go through all my files individually and update the entry values one-by-one then so be it, but thought I'd ask anyway.

My Friend and I made a tool that might help you. Here it is if you want to look at it:

Stepmania Background Utility

It can also MIGHT be developed to read in the .cvs files for the Xbox game if necessary for easy conversions.

Oh sweet, this is pretty neat. It may help a little, but increasing the values per line would require changing each of them one by one, instead of doing them all at once. I may give this a shot to see how well it goes, but I'm sure I'm gonna screw up my addition and lose my place at some point, heh. Roll Eyes

If anybody plans to update it, I'd say add the option where if you change the value of the first bgchange entry, it automatically changes the others by that same number, or at get a pop-up asking "do you want to change the other entries by #" or something.

SEPTEMBER 1, 2021 UPDATE: Here are some important links to take into consideration. Send me a PM if anything needs to be posted in the first page for easy access:
Old, outdated scripts I found way back 2007 or so for songs during the Max-Extreme era.
https://www.dropbox.com/home/DDR%20MTV?preview=SMs.zip

Green Ghost's random movies
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1nHwUysWgvJ1mWH0M7OaEIdgAi7wT0UDw

Green Ghost's Github
https://github.com/GreenGhost21/StepMania-Simfile-Visual-Resources

Scrap Rabbit's scripts (DDR 1st-3rd, 4th and 5th)
https://mega.nz/folder/IElUEAiL#boCQ50SNomfyU-UM7Kk4Gw
https://mega.nz/folder/5RU0XCzJ#oARWd4DzOrI1oNPISrFdAA
https://mega.nz/folder/8cUE1SJI#PHcjTGpzU3vmibuQS6VMZg

First of all, thank you for the shout-out regarding my resources. However, I'd just like to say that, with respect to the RandomMovies link, SDB13 should be the one credited (for the original upload of the videos; I just organized them into the format I use for my scripts and reuploaded them at that link).

Second, since you've posted the GitHub link, I imagine it's going to be more important for me to focus on maintaining it. That's been very hard lately, as I've been fairly busy, and don't really have the time to format everything just so. On that note, I was thinking of going back to my old system of uploading text files with only the #BGCHANGES section. The reason I switched to uploading an entire .ssc file was because there was confusion regarding how to use the scripts due to lack of instructions, so I'll write up instructions this time.

On the subject of adjusting the timings of songs: Spreadsheets with formulas are amazing for stuff like that. I have one for adjusting BG script timings across an entire song, but it requires a trick with Notepad++ to get the proper inputs. I'll see if I can make it simpler for the user sometime, and once I do I'll share it here.

I just wanted to get these thoughts out there, while I have the opportunity to write them down. Don't worry, I've been working on making BG Scripts since my last post; I just haven't had time to share them, and I have a lot to share, especially compared to most other individual posts on here. Stay tuned...

P.S. for DarkFeline: If you're OK with it, I'd also appreciate you adding my Mega link for the RandomMovies as a mirror. I personally know of one person who has trouble downloading from Google Drive, and I imagine that they're not the only one. Plus, having multiple download links is generally a good idea regardless.
