I've noticed in games like this, there's usually a LOT of try hards, and I understand, I have been a try hard, I think everyones does at some point, but is there a reason why you guys mainly play like that?
Because it's fun. I like having a good time, playing the game is a good time, therefore I play the game. There is a misconception with players who prefer freestyle or just kinda grooving while they play that players who are trying to improve their scores aren't having a good time which is just a weird thing to think. Why would anyone spend that kind of time on something they don't find fun?

I've always loved music. I got into DDR because I thought it looked interesting. Then eventually I started making simfiles so I could combine the two. I play other rhythm games too because I just like music and hitting buttons I guess Tongue

Nowadays, it's a mix between enjoying the old times and using it as a hobby to help me calm down when I'm irritated.

Back then, I was HOOKED to rhythm games, especially DDR.

"♪ ([u_u]) ♫"
As a music lover, and a video game lover, the mix of both seems the perfect mix. I used to create a lot of simfiles, but now, responsbilities reduced considerably my time, so now I play just for fun, with ocassional songs edit. Big Grin

Rhythm games have helped broaden my appreciation of everything EDM related throughout my life. Games like Beatmania(original and IIDX) introduced me to cool subgenres like acid techno, breakcore, happy hardcore and so much more! I don't think I'll ever stop playing these types of games. Smile

Back then, when my first exposure to rhythm games as a kid was DDR, something about how different those games looked and functioned compared to other video games really caught my attention, because actually getting to do something with songs in some way instead of just leaving them as background noise was really intriguing. Being in an Asian country, the Philippines, also helped because DDR, or "Dance Revo" as we called it, started the country's craze for dance music of the era being really popular, so those games essentially shaped my music taste. Dance-pop and EDM take up majority of my music library and that's what I listen to when I'm outdoors. Also, the games are absolutely fun af. I don't wanna care too much about achieving high scores.

And it wasn't just the songs from rhythm games that made me love the genre; it was the art too that really caught my eye. The arrows, the UI, the CD's (those goddamn CD's), the character designs (though my love for Konsento came much later lmao) from the early DDR games were so eye-catching that I remembered making drawings of them as a kid. Essentially, when I started using Photoshop, one of the first things I did was try to make my own graphics for simfiles I wanted to create when I got my hands on StepMania on the computer. Eventually, that love for making graphics got me to taking up Multimedia Arts in college.

TLDR: Rhythm games, starting with DDR, out of every other game, completely shaped my music taste and my artistic abilities, and that genre's a hyperfixation that also shaped me as an autistic man.
