In the arcade, I used to like playing the Random nonstop course on DDR Extreme. This course would choose random songs in either Heavy or Challenge difficulty.

Stepmania allows you to choose random songs by a single difficulty name ("HARD" or "CHALLENGE"), or by a range of foot ratings ("6..9"). However, I can't seem to find a way to select the songs from multiple difficulty names (i.e. "HARD..CHALLENGE"). Is this possible?

SM already does this automatically. A course has three difficulties unless the theme prevents it. So if you set up your songs on hard and they have no challenge charts then you only get one difficulty, if you set them up on basic or difficult and they have expert and challenge charts then you’ll get three difficulties. So let’s say you have a two song course. You select Blue Impulse basic and Across The Nightmare difficult. That’s the easy setting. Press down twice and it becomes those songs on difficult and expert. Do it again and they’re on expert and challenge.

Thank you, but I don't think that's exactly what I'm going for. What I'm trying to create is a course that could randomly pull either the Expert or Challenge chart of a song, without knowing which one I'll get ahead of time. Or one that could even pull Oni-only songs.

Oh gotcha. I thought you wanted to create different difficulties (like non-stop on Extreme having normal and difficult or marathons in ITG having normal and intense) not add two song difficulties for it to choose from on one course difficulty. I do think that if you do random challenge it can’t select expert, so if that’s what you mean by oni-only that should work but I don’t know how to get it to select randomly from expert and challenge.

Earlier DDR games only haves NORMAL and DIFFICULT courses in NONSTOP mode. Some DDR themes in all stepmania versions only have 2. CHALLENGE mode only have only one in DDR priors or equals to Supernova2. By default, all SM versions and my DDR A-based themes have 3 difficulties and SM 5 / Outfox can have up to 5 or 6 difficulties depending on theme.
