San Diego / Redshirt Theory
BPM 134
Beginner 1 // Light 4 // Standard 7 // Heavy 10

From the album I Think It's Gonna Rain. (But I know it best from Beat Hazard Ultra! Anyone remember that gem?)

Should fulfill the BPM, 4th/8th note, and spin requirements. Remember, if something looks odd, give it a spin!

I had fun trying to match the choreography to the steps. In doing so I accidentally fulfilled all the criteria.

- 126 BPM, nothing fancy.
- 4ths, 8ths, and 12ths only.
- 4 spins and 2 270s.
- 4 hands, as seen in the video. (well... the first 2 are in the video and the last 2 are very much implied)
- Chorus follows the attached video, and like sometimes there are other bits that follow the video too.
(please download with the video if possible!)

Thanks for the ten weeks! Not sure if I'll VIP so let's just have fun!

Well it's the last week for the main part of the contest, and it's about under 2 days before voting closes, so I'm just going to post my thoughts/feedback/opinions on the week 10 files.

1, 2 Step (Haley Halcyon)
I’m vibing with this. I understand what the Challenge chart goes for and the shock arrows that go to the claps fit well. Some holds in that chart, I feel like it could’ve been shortened to the next 4th note so it follows the harmony nicely. I do like that there are differences between Heavy and Challenge with how the notes are placed and follow to different parts of the song, though I’m not exactly sure if the 16th notes felt correct (in a way) during Missy Elliott’s part in Heavy. Maybe it’s because I’m mixing up with Missy’s vocals or the kicks/beat in the song for the notes, but something felt off during that section.

24 Hours (vincentw)
I feel like if you’re going to do hands in your chart, you could’ve just use 1 single note during the jump-hold sections instead of doing quads (though now that I think about it, I feel like the rating would be at least an 11 instead of a 10). Aside from that, considering that you restrict yourself to using 4ths, 8ths and 12ths, I think it does a good job with the patterns, variety and keeps the chart interesting.

All Night Long (about:blank)
Hmm… I get what you’re trying to go for, but maybe it’s missing something to make it stand out. Considering with the song, it could’ve gone a bit more with the instrumental a bit more in a few sections, especially the 2nd half of the chart in Challenge. I do appreciate the technical aspects of the charts I’ve played through (Heavy & Challenge), but I feel like it didn’t fully click with me.

amaterasu (brunobg24)
Pretty reminiscent of the DDRMAX era (or maybe EXTREME, either one of the two). Honestly, I quite like it; especially considering the chart restricts itself to using only 4th and 8th notes. The spins are also quite nice in this (especially dig the first spin with the holds).

Bad Boy (SupremeX)
Genuinely feels uninspired. The patterns didn’t vary enough throughout the chart, the doublesteps are very noticeable in some parts and some of the notes don’t match to a specific part of the song (like it doesn’t fully commit to the vocals or the beat). The spins felt a fit forced in some areas and just comes off as something to fill in the quota.

Beautiful Harmony (IIDX Mix) (Pandy X)
Has good pacing. I like how the progression throughout the whole chart. Going for simple rhythms to ease the player in to complex patterns and note usage to keep them engaged. I do like the hold spins in the beginning of Heavy. Very nice.

Cinnamon (t7r)
Well that was a lot of spins and turns. Not that it’s inherently bad in of itself. Maybe a bit too much footswitching for my liking, but it fits with the tune so I can’t complain, really. The patterning throughout this is good and also fits with the guitar playing.

Contra Medley Mix (forcednature)
That was pretty solid. Definitely follows more to the rhythms and sounds of the song. And the patterning is pretty clean and consistent. Also that crossover pattern in Heavy (b216-b232, though most likely referring to b227-232) is interesting but it somehow works, especially nice considering how it flows with the next set of patterns.

Good Time (hooky)
Pretty solid. Nice and simple patterns and follows the song a bit loosely with enough breathing room to dance along to as notes appear. I kind of dislike how it ends, however. I feel that it could’ve follow to the ending vocals instead of being two long hold notes at the end.

Hoono to Mori no Carnival (talkion)
There are some things that I like and thought are interesting in this one (especially the beginning of Heavy with its patterns) and some that I’m a bit iffy of (much like how the Standard chart ends. I felt like that could’ve followed the bells at the end instead of just two long hold notes)). I feel like during the chorus of the song in Heavy, it felt it tries to follow both the vocals and the instrumental at the same time. Admittedly I am a bit guilty of this sometimes, but I feel like the quantization of some notes felt like ‘does this note follow to the vocals or no?’ Also the gap between m50 and m51 felt like it could’ve used some 4th notes in there so it flows a bit better.

Imagine Where You Can Go (Pika-Vix)
I’m… confused. Honestly I can’t describe in words with what I’ve played through. I mean, I don’t hate it. I’m just… lost for words. Well, I can say that it mainly follows the vocals and doesn’t really follow much to the instrumental of the song, so with how it’s stepped in Heavy it felt limited with the patterning and how it flows. Honestly I’m more confused with how the mines/shock arrows were used in the chart (though now that I look at it more closely, the mines in the second half follow to the other set of vocals). I also think a hold note should be included at the end so it feels a bit more complete. Also sidenote, this definitely would be the contender for the [You Won’t See This in DDR] theme (if it ever comes up again in Summer Contest).

L.A. TIME (SomethingRandom)
This is pretty good. There are a few oddities that slightly bothered me (like, for example, after performing a spin there would be a D-U jump and perhaps after the first spin in the chart, the last note of the spin should be a hold and then either turn the jump at b31 to a single note or remove it), but overall, I like it. The patterning’s pretty interesting for what the song is and for an 11, the flow is consistent. A bit restrictive to following the vocals/instrumental at times, but again, I think this is good, especially for stepping an Italo disco song.

NEXT MY SELF (chewi)
This is really solid. I like how the spins were executed in this one and I dig the jump sections during the chorus. No complaints here.

Onegai Muscle (Loodee)
This is alright. The charting is not for me honestly, but it’s pretty clean and though maybe a bit too chaotic with the patterning and layout of the chart, it’s not bad.

PPAP -2020- (Torpak)
Now this is art. I can’t hate it, to be honest. It’s pretty charming and a novelty, especially with how it’s charted with the use of lifts and the BPM changes. I’ll say that I was a bit surprised with the BPM changes somewhere near the end, though I did see a bit of effort went into it. In short, I respect the hustle.

Prism (DDRDAIKENKAI)
I like it. The spins are pretty spicy, same goes for the patterning. Has a nice balance between simple and complex patterning. It also progresses nicely and the flow is really good in this one.

Promise (HDM300)
Holy shit this song brought back memories. Anyway, those spins during the chorus in Heavy is pretty spicy and I like how that one roll note is used. I like how the Standard chart is structured with a slight hint of unpredictability. I would probably extend the two hold notes at m14 in Heavy by another beat or more, so it matches the vocals more, but overall, really solid.

Propaganda (KevinRocker10)
The gimmicks work well for this one. The ideas shown in both Heavy and Challenge are pretty well executed and the flow is really nice. I do love those footswitches in Challenge and the spins are pretty nice to hit.

Rush-More (CLOUDIO)
It’s alright. I feel like it’s a bit too reliant on the jumps and the patterning could use a bit more variety throughout the chart. The crossovers and spins are put to good use, with that being said.

S.A.T.E.L.I.T.T.E. (Silver Spirit)
I like this. There are some odd quirks in the rhythms and patterning here and there that I found to be a bit charming. Honestly, the flow feels pretty consistent and I like how the notes are laid out.

San Diego (dj VERTICAI)
That was pretty quirky. Pretty unconventional spins, but it somewhat fits and the notes and patterns are pretty consistent to the sounds of the song. I do like the mini-jacks in the chart. Those were a fun addition to the chart.

Sense 2007 (Daffa)
I didn’t like the Challenge chart. It felt a bit cluttered with the notes and the spins kind of made it confusing to play through it in some sections of the chart. I do like the other charts I’ve played through (Standard and Heavy), hell I think the crossovers and spins were executed better in those ones. Although I do wish there was something to fill in the gap at m35-39 instead of just nothing until the next set of notes for all of the charts (well maybe except for Beginner). Like, maybe follow the notes during that part. Not completely, but something to keep the player involved.

Someday of my life (KexMiX)
I like it. The ideas presented in Heavy and Challenge is sound and fits with the vibe the song is going for. I especially like how it begins and ends in both Heavy and Challenge. I think it’s cute and it fits, especially with the spins incorporated.

Strangers (Oliverse Remix) (VanEden)
It’s pretty alright. The spins in Heavy are a bit unconventional, especially during the dubstep portion of the song, but that’s not to say it doesn’t fit with the song. I appreciate the effort throughout both charts. Both of them feel cohesive, but it’s kind of missing some spice to make it a bit more unique (like perhaps varying some patterns a bit or have notes follow a specific portion of the song).

Sweet Spot (Astroman)
This is a fun chart. I love how you did the crossovers and spins. I do feel the patterning kind of got a bit stale near the end, but honestly the spins and crossovers make up for what is essentially a minor nitpick. I also dig the jump notes when Kim sings the ‘don’t stop/sweet spot/sure shot’ parts, I thought those were cute.

Take Me Away (Telperion)
I’ll just say this now; I hate the jump-hands near the end of the Heavy chart. I feel like that’s a bit impossible to hit, unless you want the player to hit 2 arrows with one foot and hit the other arrow with the other foot at the same time. I do see the ideas the charter was going for in this one, especially with the hand usage in the first half of the song (though the section at m21-22.5, as well as m25-26.5, is questionable at best). I also feel some of the spins were a bit of odd choices in some areas with how some of them were laid out. It’s definitely alright, but I feel the negatives outweigh the positives in this one, unfortunately.

Tamago no butsuri (PenTA_)
Pro tip just so you know next time, even if the long title’s accurate, just stick to maybe 2 or 3 words when you upload a simfile, because I have to shorten the file names myself in order to get it to work in Stepmania. Anyway besides that, the rhythms were pretty consistent with the song. Some of the footswitches in Heavy were a bit brutal to time it right due to the speed and maybe the spins felt a little too fast to hit for my liking. I honestly feel a little disappointed that you didn’t follow the guitars during m42-48 in either Standard or Heavy. I do appreciate some of the ideas in both charts, like in Standard there are jumps that follow the shouting (b144-147, for example), and the patterning in Heavy has some quirks that I liked (b104-111, for example, not sure if those are considered crossovers, half-spins or something else entirely?). I honestly prefer Standard to Heavy, but I’m sure there’ll be a select few who like the Heavy chart from this one.

Young Love Rock’N’Roll (Tony Akita)
Are you sure this is a 9? It felt like a 10 due to the patterns and layout of the notes. I don’t know if those mini-jacks fit with the song during b76-79.5. Maybe go for something like a crossover pattern during that section (like maybe do L-D-R-D-L, repeat or so). I’ll say, the spins fit with the song and the crossovers the chart presents are nice and evenly paced. Some of the spins were a bit odd (like those in m60-63), but it’s quirky and I think it’s executed well (and a bit of a nitpick).

I guess this video pretty much expresses what most of the files this week were like (also hooray for obscure old memes).

" ♫~~ I'm wired to the world ~~♫"
I have my feedback here. Was a pretty good week.

1 2 Step: heavy: pretty good. I'm never a huge fan of forced spins but other than that, rhythms & patterns were fun. challenge: also pretty good.

24 hours: I like the patterns (except the forced spin). I don't love hands but that's just a personal thing since my keyboard can't register them. Best part was the 8th streams.

All Night Long: heavy: pretty cool but also kinda repetitive in the middle. challenge: a lot better imo, more interesting and some fun spins.

Amterasu: Club Ver is that you???? seriously it's fun and idk why.

Bad Boy: It's fun but it's reaaaaallly off-sync for me. See screenshot (judgment 6): https://i.imgur.com/R4NEbSh.png

Beautiful Harmony: it's fine but I'm just really not feeling it. There are several forced spins, which of course aren't an inherently bad thing, I just dislike them, and I don't really love the polarity in difficulty here.

Cinnamon: it's pretty interesting I guess. I don't love the 16th spin at the end. Not much else to say. I do like the rest of your spin-spam though.

Contra Medley Mix: heavy: I really like the patterns with the freeze arrows. challenge: it's not bad but the rhythms with the 24ths near the end got quite complex for a 15. Also maybe nitpicking but why didn't you just use the official Universe 2 gfx?

Good Time: fun fact, I stepped this like 7 years ago but the simfile is gone, it has completely vanished, so you will never know the true iconic chart for this song. very cute though, it was a good effort. I liked the jumps. also who is carlie ray jetson?

Honoo To Mori No Carnival: I really really liked it up until the chorus where there were some strange rhythms. I wasn't convinced the notes followed anything at all, and when they're this chaotic, it probably isn't a great thing.

Imagine where you can go: i mean... it's a good chart, but I'm never gonna play it again. For one reason in particular.

Investigation into eggs or whatever it's called (the penta one): Really fast with lots of 16th footswitches that aren't really telegraphed enough to work well imo.

L.A. Time: so this is that italo disco I keep hearing about? it's a cute effort at least. No seriously though it's pretty good, just a little repetitive.

Next My Self: nothing too interesting, but nothing really bad. Just some generic patterns, I think.

Onegai Muscle: heavy: I just really don't like the song because I don't believe in anime. Also I feel like the steps are over-reliant on the vocals. challenge: More of the same, just more intense and it intimidates me.

PPAP: i mean I don't really know where to put it, but still iconic, still incredible, still show-stopping.

Prism: not bad but doesn't really stand out.

Promise: it seems too karaoke-ish for my taste but still fun. also how does everybody know this song except for me? is it like some classic?

Propaganda: heavy: really good except for this soflan bullshit that gives me a migraine. challenge: still good but too hard!!!

Rush-more: the 12th arrows should be quantized as 16ths. otherwise really good though, I enjoyed it a lot.

San Diego: I realllyyyyyy wanted to give this points but it's just offsync for me. See screenshot (judgment 6): https://i.imgur.com/gdfBjBk.png

Satellite: some doublesteps unless they're supposed to be spins, in which case they aren't, or they're supposed to be footswitches, in which case they aren't telegraphed well at all. also those rogue 16ths kept throwing me off Sad

Sense 2007: not sure why everyone keeps stepping this song since it's the worst good-cool song i've ever heard but regardless. heavy: good for a hard chart. challenge: see heavy. also liked the spins & footswitches.

Someday of my life: heavy: cute and chill. challenge: honestly I feel like this is just too intense for this song, it's not technically overstepped but I feel like the mood of the song isn't as intense as the steps.

Spinning Around: iconic song, iconic video, iconic chart, loving that concept!!

Strangers (remix): nothing stands out with this chart. feels kinda generic. Not inherently bad but nothing too special.

Take Me Away: pretty decent but I really don't like hands. were they supposed to be bracketed?

Young Love Rock N' Roll: super cute but quite repetitive at times.

Thanks for running the contest! It was a nice relaxing diversion from the chaos of the outside world in this time.

EDIT: I think there was a mistake in my vote calculations. I gave a +1 to 1 2 Step, not 24 Hours. Doesn't really change anything but still.

The last contest too, I'm always just kinda...there in the standings not making any impact. Hopefully I make something you guys like at least once this contest.
Nice. I'm well below the VIP line but I'm glad I got to fulfill this at least. It's been fun!

Time for the VIP rounds. As a reminder, scores are reset to zero for everyone, and the overall scorer at the end of VIP is our contest winner! Also specific to the VIP rounds, anyone who was eliminated can still vote as well. Let's get started...

VIP Week One
Heritage Week

Time for some fun. As you already know, there have been 10 Summer Contests that have come before this one. For our final 18 contestants, your song choice must fulfill at least 2 conditions out of a selection of themes from previous Summer Contests:

SC2010: DDR EDIT - Song can be found in DDR.
SC2011: Collaboration - Song is a duet or collab from two different artists.
SC2012: High Speed - Song is over 160bpm.
SC2013: Colors - Song title features a color.
SC2014: 20th Century - Song was released before the year 2000.
SC2015: Scrabble - Song title would score at least 20 in scrabble.
SC2016: Food Week - Title or Artist features food.
SC2017: Mighty No. 9 - Title, Artist, or BPM contains the number 9.
SC2018: Covered Up - Song is a cover of another song.
SC2019: Directions - Song has Up, Down, Left, or Right in the title.

I would say most of these are fairly lenient so no need to overthink it. Good luck!

"Just call me Daff_4K"
Looks like I didn't make it into VIP. And that's not surprising. Despite this, I still end this with a quite high note by making it into the Top 10.

Anyway, for the one who make it to the VIP Room, I wish you luck.

That's all for now. Daff_4K, out. Thanks for having me for this year's contest. It was quite fun (despite some struggles in the middle of the contest). See you later.

Anyway, you can call me Daff_4K, or just Daff, ok?

For what it's worth, I found a few of your charts really good. Off the top of my head, Disco Nights was a standout.

I would have likely voted for 1, 2 Step this week, but I ran out of time.
