"BIG SWANS!!!"
I felt I always make my steps wrong and I barely look if they're pad-friendly.
I still wanna go on the ITG-style, but no doublestep-ing and getting a headache.

I know that simfile contest is the solution but I make simfiles as a hobby.

I think it's safe to say that everyone here makes simfiles as a hobby.

Having said that, you limit yourself when you give your self restrictions such as "no double-stepping"

I tend to create step patterns to emphasize parts of a song.

Ultimately, it comes down to practice/experience. The more files you make, the better you will be. My simfile category had over 200 files before I scrapped half of them due to the steps being made when I first started. 16th note spins? Ha, those were the days.

But double-stepping is generally a bad thing, he should be trying to avoid that.
I mean there's legitimate uses for double-stepping, but 95% of the time double-stepping completely breaks the flow of a chart.

Anyways, basic patterns guide:

Here are some more posts regarding doublesteps that helped me when I was getting started with simming!

What is a doublestep? by TaroNuke
Step patterns without doublesteps by xRGTMx
More step patterns by xRGTMx**
Even more step patterns by xRGTMx**

** - These are definitely more advanced, and I would get used to using the patterns from xRGTMx's first footpattern post before treading into this territory.

Besides practicing making simfiles (duh), I find it really helpful to play a lot of other people's simfiles. Play a variety of different stepcharts from different step artists and figure out what you find fun and what you don't find fun. Once you've decided what kinds of patterns and gimmicks you find fun, start stealing their ideas implementing those patterns and gimmicks into your own steps.
