Ok, I'm trying it again. May I request for a simfile category called "Paranoid Roommates"? I have earned some points and I hope I can get a category like everybody else. Thank you!

Requirement: You must have a user rating of 50pts or above to get your own category.
15 < 50 pts.

If you don't have 50 points or up, you can ask Aegis via PM so he can grant you access to upload simfiles on a shared simfile pack which is called "49 and under".

Kind of sucks that it's 50 and over. Some people with lower user ratings actually have really good ideas. I've got bunches of them, but to no avail. But no qualms on it, i guess it is to stop people uploading viruses and stuff.

When it used to be the case where anyone can request categories. I would create the category for them and then they would leave that category unused forever - clogging up the site.
I might lower or remove that requirement someday depending on how everyone feels about this.

I feel like it should be lowered, maybe like 15~25 points or something like that.

I also see some people with 9 points getting his own category on the first page of the thread. I would suggest that the requirements should be lowered or else removed as I bet many people have their own creativity to develop various kinds of unique simfiles. Although many abandoned categories will be made, I would suggest also to just remove the category after not being viewed for like a month. Somebody with 50 points or above and another person with like 5 points may not differ from each other as the amount of points they have does not determine whether one is more active or not.

It's fine at 50 points. If you wanna host sims here, then prove yourself to be a welcome member of the community. These things come quicker than you think if you just abide by the rules and be a regular member of the community. Categories shouldn't just be given out like whatever; all that does is create clutter and waste space.
Also, that user with 9 points that got his category doesn't have their files on here anymore. And it was over 8 years ago, when they actually had the points needed. Just saying.

A big rating doesn't mean you necessarily contribute to the community at all. Users who have been here a long time have big ratings just because they've been here a long time.

I totally agree with chewi's idea. A high rating does not make a you 'a regular member of the community'. How are we not abiding the rules? How are we not struggling to earn points and ratings? New members who are serious about the simfiles they create will be discouraged by the requirement when they find out that they should have 50pts and above which is kind of a defect to the simfiles collection of the website itself. As we all know, abiding rules and being a regular member of the community do not earn you any points. By realizing that it is quite tough to reach 50pts, people will start searching for alternatives to upload their simfiles somewhere which is obviously able to reduce the popularity of the website. This is because earning points depends wholly on how other members rate them. Therefore, they may find this as a really tough goal and hence switch to another alternative instead of trying to reach 50pts which is quite challenging to achieve.Post #1253 · Posted at 2015-04-24 05:56:00pm 8.9 years ago

The minimal rating could be 5 or 500 or basically anything, anyone who is really contributed to earning those points will try to do it y'know? Most of the people are very determined (which is sometimes bad ) and they actually earn the points and go up to 50.
It just doesn't matter!

I'm not a huge fan of the 50 pts requirement since the amount of time it takes to actually obtain that many points could take 2 days, it could take 10 months, you never know. Even when you contribute, there's no guarantee that someone will give you any points for what you're doing, which isn't to say they aren't grateful, it's just that dishing out points is not the first thing on the mind for most people.
Besides lowering it to a much more easily obtainable number or just eliminating the point requirement altogether, I don't know what alternatives you could really suggest. There's always something like "wait X amount of days before you can have a category" I guess *shrug*.

Now that I think about it, I actually concur to this idea of not needing 50 points to get a category.
How does 25 sound? If a reasonable amount of people approve of this idea, I'll annoy Alan about it, and see if he'll change it.

I'll second this as I've been on here for about 3+ years and I just recently hit 50+ points. If the biggest concern is just someone requesting a category and then never using it, why not just delete the category if no uploads have been made in X amount of days and then the owner of that category can't request another category for Y amount of weeks? The points thing seems pretty silly to be honest.

That seems like a good idea doesn't it?
