I've spent some time researching, editing DDRMAX2 JP, and would like to share my findings so others who have the game can mess around with it using what I've learned. I've uncovered information regarding all sorts of things in the game engine, from stuff regarding how the game loads sound data on each screen, to how the game song wheel is composed, and how the data for that is laid out, to things like how the step edit data is stored in memory, even to things like if it is possible to put in custom music on your own (with a bit of effort).

There won't be posting of any illegal content like ISO images, nor will links be posted on where to get that stuff by me - this would just be the information I've gathered.

Part of me thinks it may not be a problem, but I thought I would ask before posting to avoid any issues.

"five minute white boy challenge"
I don't think it'd be a problem at all.

Approximately nobody asked for this song to be included. Least popular decision by the Japanese since Nintendo released the Wii U.

"sup"
It shouldn't be a problem. As long as you're not giving the source code away (which I think is still protected by copyright but I don't know right now) you're free to post this type of information. It might actually help for the Stepmania simulator in someway!

You have access to the DDRMAX2 JP contents?

http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/star2b.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/geometry1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/heart1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/wheel1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/tunnel2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/fire1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/ribbon2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/stairs1.jpg

Can you identify the names of these movies?

Here's all of the possible names they could be, based on research;

*pskcoa

*pskisb
*pskkia
*psklia
*psklib
*pskwha
*pspuka
*psrasa
*psrasb
*pssrha
*pswoma
*pswomb

I will also show you more movies with confirmed names just so you aren't confused.

The source name for all of these movies have been confirmed, but not the 8 (and additionally 6 other movies). The person that was working on this project vanished from the internet, my last contact with him was around May 2014. I'd like to finally click in the last pieces of the puzzle to at least finish this for him.

You have access to the DDRMAX2 JP contents?

Yep - and just as a general note, I have DDRMAX JP, MAX US, MAX2 JP, MAX2 US, EXTREME JP, EXTREME US, and EXTREME 2, so any mysteries surrounding content in any of these games I could research.

I'll definitely see if I can identify those videos - would be good to finish what was left unfinished.

Although my current focus is on one or two games, I hope to also take the notes I've accumulated, the notes of those who researched prior to me, and those who are interested and helping, to take the stuff applicable to any of the MAX-EXTREME era PS2 games, and make a guide applicable to the game engine in general - as opposed to just MAX2JP, EXTREME, ETC. Big Grin

And on that note I will also say that in the MAX2 JP guide I am working on, I will attribute prior research to the proper peoples - after all, two halves make a whole, and without their research, my research would be just as filled with gaps - gaps they fill my research with as much as I fill some of their gaps too. Big Grin

( I also hope to eventually tackle the PSX mixes, as well as the arcade mixes (system573 Analog/Digital) too (so far as the engine inner workings go), though I wouldn't be able to test anything arcade after 2nd Mix since I don't have access to a machine, and MAME, which I could use for testing, only supports 2nd and lower until system573 sound emulation is completed, which seems to be something never happening. Sad )

There are also 10 other videos with unknown names. My research is here. I downloaded the roms, but I don't want to play them out of fear it might exhaust my computer. That doesn't stop me from going into a file that contains multiple text data, including the names for songs and videos.

Kind Lady movies;

http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl3.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl4.jpg
http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl5.jpg

Left to right top row; kl1, kl2, kl3, kl4

Bottom row; kl5

Misc. PS movies;

http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/lady20.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/max3.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/nyc1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/sphere4.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/sphere4.jpg

Left to right; lady20, max3, nyc1, sphere4 (two 80 frame parts)

The possible filenames;

*pscita
*psfloa
*psflob
*pskcoa
*pskina
*pskisa
*pskisb
*pskkia
*psklia
*psklib
*pskwha
*psmaxa
*pspuka
*psrasa
*psrasb
*pssrha
*pswoma
*pswomb

My guess is that pscita is nyc1, psmaxa is max3, and sphere4 is psfloa-psflob.

The others;

*pskcoa
*pskina
*pskisa
*pskisb
*pskkia
*psklia
*psklib
*pskwha
*pspuka
*psrasa
*psrasb
*pssrha
*pswoma
*pswomb

No clue whatsoever. Lady20 + 5 of the Kind Lady movies are trapped in there, I know it.

I can't wait for you to finally solve this mystery. What I might do is add a patch to AeronPeryton's old thread containing all of the movies Beware has that Aeron doesn't, with their official names. And, of course, make all of the remaining BGscripts.

Taking a brief break at work, so I ma able to make at least one note

The slus file is actually the game executable - dunno why, instead of keeping the ".elf" file extension, and calling the file DDRMAX2.elf, Konami decided to use the game region code [in this case SLUS], and what I assume is some sort of identifying number [20711] and give the file the name + extension"SLUS207.11," but that's what they do.

Hmm, odds are the list you saw in there is an array of references - from what I gather, the actual m-jpegs are in the filedata.bin file (along with the songs, game graphics, and perhaps, not 100% sure yet, the step data), guess it's now a question of the relationship between the two (the files in the filedata.bin, and the array), and a question of whether or not directly editing the array will impact what videos play when (if it does, that will help a LOT).

Interesting side note... Konami for whatever reason left debugging information tacked on to the end of the ELF executable - including the names of variables used in the game. This helps me in other aspects of my expedition in 2 ways: They give me insight as to what potential memory addresses are being used for, and they let me take memory addresses in a disassembly and give them their identifying variable name back, making it easier to see what is being done with the data.

Yep, SLUS207.11 is the precise name of the reference list.

DDRMAX2 USA

Open the file in notepad, Ctrl + F, say, "jsenea", and you will see some movie names + other text that makes sense;

Experiment 1

Let's look at jsenea video (http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/bubble2r.jpg). It's in the list above. Try swapping it's placement with jstrea.

Jsenea plays at the beginning of Hysteria. Go right ahead and play that. If Jsenea is at the beginning, the test will not work. If, however, the beginning video resembles this;

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/dancedancerevolutionddr/images/a/ab/Jstrea.png/revision/latest?cb=20131018063332

Then the test will work. Swap jsenea and jstrea back when you're done testing.

If it succeeds, begin swapping the placement of the following movie names.

Tier 1;

*jsenea ⇄ pskcoa
*jspora ⇄ pskina
*jskeba ⇄ pskisa
*ccheaa ⇄ pskisb
*jssiba ⇄ pskkia
*jspaua ⇄ psklia
*jsccca ⇄ psklib
*jstasa ⇄ pskwha

Tier 2;

*jsenea ⇄ pspuka
*jspora ⇄ psrasa
*jskeba ⇄ psrasb
*ccheaa ⇄ pssrha
*jssiba ⇄ pswoma
*jspaua ⇄ pswomb

In Hysteria, this is the order the movies first appear in;

http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/bubble2r.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/disco3.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/cyber2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/heart2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/amoeba4.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/fireworks4.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/tunnel7.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kaliedoscope8.jpg

jsenea jspora jskeba ccheaa jssiba jspaua jsccca jstasa

The one you have to watch out for is jstasa. The other 7 will play in order, then 5 movies will play a second time before jstasa appears.

Tell me which 8 of the 14 movies appears in the song in order for Tier 1, then tell me what order the remaining 6 movies appear in Tier 2.

Here are the closest thing to names for them (decided by a person called 'beware')

http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/star2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/geometry1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/heart1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/wheel1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/tunnel2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/fire1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/ribbon2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/stairs1.jpg

star2 geometry1 heart1 wheel1 tunnel2 fire1 ribbon2 stairs1

http://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl1.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl2.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl3.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl4.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/kl5.jpghttp://ddr.bircd.org/vidthumbs/lady20.jpg

... kl1 . kl2 . kl3 . kl4 . kl5 lady20

If you see a movie that does not look like any of the thumbnails above, please give information on what the movie DOES look like so it can be logged too.

Side note, is there a way to get into the filedata.bin file? Not open it, but extract the contents?

So I tried swapping out names, that just caused Hysteria's BG videos to not load at all. 0_o

...oh. >.<

That won't work, sadly. Must be a strictly-made text array that can't be changed.

Alright, plan B... Is there a way to connect jsenea in SLUS207.11 with the blue circles video in Filedata.bin? There HAS to be a way to get the video data out. If it's not possible to extract a video, the video probably can't exist at all.

I wouldn't say that it's that hopeless, perhaps the game just has some sort of failsafe that prevents repeated objects in the list - and directly swapping one with the other works.

Reminds me of the music info definitions - the info that appears on the song wheel - and how swapping two entire 136 bytes worked so far as actually swapping two song wheel slots. I demonstrated the effects of that swappage in this video:

Since my original thread intent was to ask if posting this info is OK, and it seems fine, I'm just gonna make a new master DDR hackign thread in the BEMANI forum, where we can continue this.

While we have strayed well off the original topic (going form "is this OK" to talking about the subject matter), the original intent of this thread **was** to make sure posting this stuff was OK/I wasn't gonna get a moderator on my ass for posting about it. Big Grin
