I currently still play PSP Revolution on my PSP but am looking for other ways to get my DDR fix on the go.
I've tried PSP Mania (Stepmania port) on my PSP before and it was laggy to the point of not being able to function.

I think I should give up on playing on my PSP and look into other options so that's why I'm starting this thread. What portable DDR options are there?

I know there are a few Stepmania clones for ios and android. I will say I am NOT a fan of using a touch screen when playing, its gotta be a controller. That's why I've stuck to using a nearly 10 year old method to still play it.

This is what I am most curious about. I know a few phones can connect to controllers like a Dualshock 4. Are there any options where I can use that controller and play stepmania or a version of it? Has anyone tried this? If there are other options besides this that don't involve touching a screen, let me know.

I've got StepMania 3.9+ on a netbook, but I use a USB keyboard when playing because the arrow keys on the netbook itself are too small to be of any good use. Something like that is probably not as portable as you're aiming for though, I imagine.

Yeah, I should have been more specific.

I much prefer playing with my thumbs, ie a PS2 type controller.

My friend has a sony Z3 and yesterday using their PPSSPP software (psp emulator), I installed PSP revolution on it tried playing with the DS4, It was awful. Sync was messed up and most steps didn't even register.

I guess worse case scenario I would like to play SM on my laptop with a dualshock. Is there any lagfree way to do that?

I still want to know other kind of portable options, though.

This is probably the closest thing to getting it to work on your PC, it works sorta well for my friend and some others. Hopefully it'll be good for you.

I think there are some controllers that can be connected via AirPlay on iOS, but I'm not sure about the simulators on there that are good. TapMania requires a constant internet connection. I think on Android has one or two good ones too.

Practically matters what device you have.

I pretty much run StepMania 3.9 on my laptop with a wired Xbox 360 controller. It works for the most part, but because of the bad D-pad, there'll be some misses.

I've tried a few simulators for Android, but some phones can't handle the speed of some songs.

For android phones (Sprint Force, I believe), I've used Beats portable, which is decent for the most part. Sadly, there's no speed changes (it uses a Cmod or sorts) and sometimes it doesn't read stops or speed changes correctly or consistently (i.e. Destination's stops are read a bit late, EGOISM's stop section towards the beginning.) Overall though, the program's decent. I use it a lot to pass the time. You could use a d-pad that's on screen (literally thumb DDR), but you said you didn't want touch screen so...

I've also tried BeatX, and I cannot get the syncing right. I would personally not recommend it. Tapboxes are hard to hit, but speed changes are used (sometimes glitchy, though)

I believe there are PS2 to Usb cables that allow you to use ps2 controllers for computers, but that would only work if you had a computer. Just a thought.

I figure this written question is to lead into practicing Over the Period and the like.

Have you considered the TapMania app for iOS Apple devices (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad)?

I'm considering all possibilities right now, even if that means switching to an iphone. Just as long as I can have a good SM experience with a PS2 style controller.

Exor-Thank you very much for mentioning that. That got me thinking to just use my xbox one controller. If you have one you should consider that as well. The D-pad on an xbox one controller is ungodly. Though if I am going to nitpick, I prefer the dualshock for buttons. Something about that flat top feels better for DDR.

mf32892-Haha, no, I'm not just doing this for practicing OTP. I can already do that on my PSP I've been using forever it seems. I just want to upgrade and seeing what options there are.

LuNeTakaneko-I'll look into airplay, thanks for that idea.

Keep suggestions coming. In the meantime, I will tryout my xbox one controller and get back to you guys.

Yes, I'm being serious.

Using this worked for me to plug in a PS2 controller with USB. But there are better adapters out there.

Or if you don't want to pay 80 bucks for a contoller, this will do.

I am still using ASKL on my keyboard especially while playing Stepmania which makes it much easier to play the songs instead of using the arrows.

Keep in mind, while I might be able to find a good option using my laptop, which I think I just did with my xbox one controller, a laptop isn't exactly as "portable" as I am hoping.

But yes, I tried my xbox one controller breifly and I think it felt pretty damn good, I still gotta test it out more though to give a final verdict. So for "mid-size" portability, I think I found my answer.

Now, let's keep working to find something handheld. (PSP, Vita, Phone+controller, ?, Profit)

Funny you mention an Xbox One controller. I just installed its driver to my laptop. I should try that out one of these days.

EDIT: You also reminded me to install my Dual Shock 3 to my laptop, considering how godlike its D-pad is (it's my preferred controller for Street Fighter).

I also have a separate setup on an external hard drive, though you'll need a Windows computer to run it. If the computer has decent specs (about 512MB RAM), Stepmania 3.9 will run smoothly. Not sure about Stepmania 5, though.
