Hi All,

I finally decided to get off my lazy butt and make some simfiles of my own.

A repeating problem I am having is that editing the sm file isn't changing the information in the game. For example, I'm trying to change the title of one of the songs but it isn't changing. Also, I'm trying to add BPMs but putting #DISPLAYBPM:150.000000; or #DISPLAYBPM:150; isn't working.

I have tried...
0) Saving the .SM file after editing it
1) Turning "Fast Load" off.
2) Restarting the computer.
3) Running game as admin.
4) http://www.reddit.com/r/Stepmania/comments/2txh5i/songs_wont_load_on_windows_machine/
5) "Reload Song" option

*************
THE SOLUTION:
For Stepmania 5 files, you must delete the .SSC files as they take priority over the .SM files.
NOTE: I tried editing the .SSC file but the file still wouldn't update. Therefore, just delete the .SSC file and the .SSCold files and you should be set!

*************
I run Windows 7, Stepmania 5.3.

"BANNED"
Just curious have you tried saving the .SM file after making the edits?

Yes, when opening the .SM file, it shows what I want it to show.
However, Stepmania won't show it.

I just deleted some song folders and those DID update. (They were deleted in Stepmania).

Therefore, it would be logical to try the following which didn't work
1) Deleting the song folder
2) Opening Stepmania and seeing that the song(s) are gone
3) Re-adding the songs
4) Songs still aren't updated.

I have also tried toggling Fast Load on and off.

You don't need to fill in DISPLAYBPM. The game can fill that in automatically. Or if you really want it to display a certain number, that can be done in the step editor.

As for the information not updating, did you try going to Options and hitting Reload Songs? Or you could just go into the step editor to change that information as well.

Which version of StepMania are you using? 5? 3.9?
If you're using 5, there will also be a .ssc file, which I believe takes precedence/priority over the .sm file. While an .ssc exists, Stepmania acts as if the .sm isn't there. So even if you make changes to the .sm, Stepmania will read the .ssc, therefore not reading the changes you made.

But if you're using 3.9 or something older, I don't know

I run 5.3

This is the answer. I deleted the ssc files and it updated (and plays fine). Thank you SO MUCH.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR HELP!

You're welcome.
I had this problem, too, for a while. I think someone else told me about ssc's dominance over sm

That's why I still prefer to use SM3.9+REDUX editor program when making simfiles. I don't really like the way SM5 handles on floating numbers and extra unnecessary ssc tags for sm files.
