"I'm honestly pissed off."
The github link shows exactly which lines I changed to make the on-screen errors disappear in 5.0.6. The green lines are lines that I added. If you remove those 8 lines in your local copy, it'll be back.

There is a 5.0.7 release candidate build now with some changes. See the first post for details.

What's the problem? I update every day. ;)
Yeah, I knew this was going to be soon when you asked about whether to update a few days ago.
The best thing to do to ease the updating process is to use the folders in %APPDATA%/StepMania 5.0/ for content. Themes go in %APPDATA%/StepMania 5.0/Themes/ and so on. Then use the AdditionalSongFolders preference in %APPDATA%/StepMania 5.0/Save/Preferences.ini to point to a common place where you have all your song packs.

If there are no serious bugs in this build, the next release will be in 3 weeks (April 1st), along with any changes that occur between now and then. Work on improving startup time is still ongoing.
So... no startup time improvements? :V

Multiple formats are not supported because they provide more places for bugs to occur and multiply the difficulty of adding new features. Also, formats such as ini are crippled when compared to newer formats like lua.

StepMania 5.0.7 has been released, with various changes to speed up loading and a few other features.
You can read the release notes on GitHub for more details, and the downloads are below the release notes.

Happy April Fools from the StepMania team!

Beat mode mostly works, and is waiting for someone to step up and work on it.

How would I go about doing this if I wished to improve beat mode? Should I make a fork on github or something?

First off, they will never be included in SM by default due to copyright issues. It was bad enough that 3.9's default theme was almost an exact replica of MAX.

Second, it should be relatively easy to convert INI BGAs to LUA. However, I'm not sure if you can find anyone who's willing to do it.

If you're willing to switch to MAX-EXTREME BG videos, then those will still work fine in SM5. I believe custom video speeds are broken, however.

Stepmania is not DDR.
If you want Stepmania to imitate DDR garbage, you'll have to do it yourself.

Custom video speeds work just fine.

Is there any way a future version could have a section under course/song edit for unlocks? Picking a song, choosing conditions, etc. Alternatively, is there a way to code them manually similar to 3.9+ REDUX's unlock system?

Yes, but they are part of theme metrics now. This section of the _fallback metrics more or less describe how the simplest unlock system works.

[UnlockManager]
# Unlock harder/different steps based on passing easier steps.
AutoLockChallengeSteps=false
AutoLockEditSteps=false
# determine if songs loaded via AdditionalSongs should be locked.
SongsNotAdditional=true

UnlockNames=""
# useful commands:
# require,(UnlockRequirement),(value);
# where (UnlockRequirement) is one of the UnlockRequirement enum values.

# song,(Song Name);
# sets a Song to be unlocked

# course,(Course Name);
# sets a Course to be unlocked

# roulette;
# Song shows up in roulette (useful with Song only)

# mod,(modifier);
# sets a modifier to be unlocked.

# code,(code);
# assigns a code to the unlock

# examples:
# 1) The song "Pledge" requires 500 AP.
# Unlock1Command=song,"Pledge";require,"UnlockRequirement_ArcadePoints",500

# 2) The song "ABC" can be unlocked via roulette; pick an arbitrary code
# to use to store the unlock.
# Unlock2Command=song,"ABC";code,"59183751";roulette

You can also do more complicated unlock systems by not providing unlock conditions and then using the UnlockManager to unlock songs from Lua code.

Unlocking is currently a somewhat unwieldy beast. What gets locked/unlocked is defined in Metrics.ini; how you unlock things must be controlled by the theme using Lua. It is up to themers to incorporate the functionality into their themes (or not).

I wrote a rather extensive/in-depth tutorial for the stepmania.com forums explaining one way in which I used the Unlock system: http://www.stepmania.com/forums/general-stepmania/show/510

"I'm honestly pissed off."
StepMania 5.0.7 had two minor bugs that have since been fixed:
1. Lifts were not counted correctly, resulting in scores over 100% on charts that use lifts.
2. A warp and a stop and a step all occurring at the same time sometimes makes the step unhittable.
The internal detail is that TimingData was sped up by creating a lookup table so that StepMania doesn't have to process the entire TimingData for the chart up to the current time several times every frame. Instead, the lookup table contains starting points for the processing to start at, so StepMania never has to go through more than 32 timing segments when calculating the current beat or elapsed time during gameplay. If a stop is the 32nd timing segment, and a warp is on the same row, and there's a step on that row, that step will be unhittable.

Since these bugs affect scoring, it's worth warning people about them, but since they're so rarely encountered, another rush release doesn't seem necessary. Report any other issues found so they can be fixed.

The next release will be May 10th. (Shakesoday)

Sorry for the dumb questions, but can you explain this part to me? Also, is there a list of usable unlock requirements somewhere?

So I noticed that you can set different audio files for charts now. I figured it would be a good way to consolidate the Japanese and Chinese versions of the DDR songs that have both.

One problem though: You're forced to play on a difficulty that uses the audio file. I believe in DDR it plays the Chinese version whenever the Challenge chart is played.

I was wondering if it was possible for that to be done. I think even people outside of the DDR fanbase would like to have this feature as well. I was thinking maybe an option in the SSC specifying which behavior the simfile maker would prefer would be the best route.
