Hey, I had this idea to combine karaoke and DDR for my college friends by dancing on a pad using Stepmania and singing to some well-known songs at the same time. For this I'll need some well-known songs with beginner stepcharts and background video's with the lyrics. Anyone know where I could find such files? Of course other ideas to combine karaoke and DDR are most welcome too.

It's been done.
Karaoke Revolution Party for the PS2 / Xbox / Gamecube.
It's SUPER HARD even though the steps are easy, just trying to do both at the same time is very clumsy, most people play with two players, one on pad and one on mic, but it's intended for a single person.

^ Yeah, and trying to sing while playing is more tiring than it seems.
Still, if you are just aiming for "DDR + sing-along" StepMania can render lyrics during gameplay from .lrc files. [old YouTube example]
They are definitely easier to make than full videos with sing-along lyrics (though still a little time-consuming).
For the background videos themselves you could download generic ones and have them play randomly during the songs.
As for popular music, you could try searching among the user-made simfiles from here.
However, as .lrc files aren't too common you'll probably have to make them yourself for the simfiles that don't have one*.
*Just don't forget to ask permission from the simfile authors if you're planning to redistribute the edited files.
Also, welcome to ZIv! Have a nice stay.

there's DDR Karaoke Mix; unfortunately it's Japan only... and it's pretty rare to find this game.

pretty rare is an understatement, it's impossible to find now
there was one out in a karaoke club in japan but it broke and konami refused to give support for it so noone knows what happened to it after that
also one "mysteriously" popped up on yahoo JP auctions 7 years ago but nothing came of it and nobody knows what happened to it
so yeah; none exist anymore unless there's one magically in a storage room in japan but it's highly unlikely that will ever pop up again

Huh... now that you mention it, that would make some interesting co-op play if it were two pairs of mic/mat players versus each other. Probably would never sell at this point, but if only it were easy to get karaoke simfiles I'd totally play that with friends.

Just Dance with Karaoke sounds more plausible with a head mic or however you choose to set it up. You would have more room and control. That's not going to happen though. Coming 2036.

that looks like it would be really uncomfortable to play
there's a reason that players go to painstaking efforts sometimes to make sure the screen is the right distance off the ground. nobody wants to be looking up/down while playing

Thanks for the help! I looked into lrc-files some more and managed to create one. How do I get it to show up in the game? So far I've not been able to get the lyrics to work, eventhough they're in the same folder and have the same file name...

There's actually an official Karaoke DDR called DAM DDR, there are two mixes. There have been commercials filmed for it, and it was supposed to have over 20,000 songs. The steps would be auto-generated.
