I was wondering if anyone could help me with a problem I'm having with my dance pad. The down arrow only seemed to work sometimes, and so I made a quick edit of PARANOiA to figure out why that was, since it seemed fine on the menus. Turns out, when any other arrow is being held down, the down arrow refuses to work, but when I let go, the down arrow proceeds to work as normal. Is there any way I could fix this, or should I just get a new pad?

The soft pad that came with the game, probably should have specified.

Generally, I would rule this out as simply 'wear and tear', the connection between the pad and sensor is probably either shot or just messed up. It's odd though that typically this issue would also happen on Stepmania, but it can easily be resolved using controller programs like Joypad or DS3 Tool to map the buttons so that certain mappings of the controller don't interfere with other keys/buttons while playing Stepmania. Seeing that this is on PS2 that should not be an issue since the controller was already programmed to run on PS software, so there should not be any customization at all.

You should think about getting another pad from someone or just flat out buy another one (Gamestop pads are the lowest quality, but if it's the down arrow that's messed up and not your system then problem solved?).

OP didn't say anything about the pad not working in StepMania. If that was the case then the PS2-USB adapter is the likely culprit. Otherwise if it's messed up on PS2 that really doesn't make sense problem would happen during options as well.

Exactly, I pointed it out that since the problem is happening on the PS2 then the pad should already be mapped without any issues. I was just referencing SM because I've had a similar issue when I used to play on pad to play on StepMania, and it typically was resolved using that work-around. Here though it's much complicated, it could be many factors but the most likely suspect is either the pad itself or the connector that connects from the pad to the console.

Pretty much, just try another one and see if that one works the same or if it's giving you the same issue, if it is then that's something probably beyond my extent of knowledge.

Good point, also make sure to turn dance pad mode on to disable the non-arrow buttons. But trying to figure out why a soft pad isn't working typically involves destroying the soft pad in the process.

All other pads I have to try have different problems that make them even less playable, but not the same one, so I'm guessing that it's just a problem with the pads.
I'm probably just going to get another pad and mod it into a hard pad, do you have any suggestions/links for which pad to use, or would just any work(besides broken ones obviously)?

How do you mod a soft pad into a hard pad? Tape the pad to a hard base?
The only soft pads recommended by StepMania anymore is DancePadMania plus they have a good warranty.

That's one way to do it, but another way is to just use the circuits and put them into a hard base that you build.
Here's a thread about building/modding pads.
It is possible to use a traditional PS2 controller for this, but it'd probably(at least for me) be easier to figure out the wiring if I just used a dance pads circuits. I'm probably going to just use a softpad before then though.

I looked it up, and that's usb only correct? I'm looking for a PS2 pad.

Seems like a waste of effort, soft pads have really cheap circuitry. Any videos of a pad made like that working like a hard pad on hard songs?
Disclaimer: I'm the dance pad designer for Precision Dance Pads. A true test of a dance pad is performance and I can't imagine ever being able to make any part of a soft pad work on hard songs.
