What's wrong with enjoying some Tetris or Puyo Puyo?
Neither of which are Columns or Bejeweled. :VPost #22 · Posted at 2014-07-28 02:40:06pm 9.7 years ago

Nothing in gaming ever has one forever.
They'll be cherished, then they'll sink deep...deep...forgotten.

Except StepMania. I will be developing for StepMania forever.

I have no soul.
On topic: I think rhythm games as a whole have certainly been innovative in new forms of gameplay but not the individual games themselves.

They appeal to a wider demographic, but are lacking the imagination and progressive elements that are halmark of more traditional video games
You could make that same argument for the big name games in every genre. Obvious first example: is there anything that is "imaginative and progressive" about most first person shooters? No. Despite how they might try to dress it up, you're still shooting a gun. You're still the same guy/girl shooting the gun. Plots/stories etc aside, they're all fundamentally the same. The same can go for racing games, fighting games, RPG's etc. If you're looking for "imaginative and progressive elements" in any genre, you're going to be disappointed. Yes, there are games that will do new things for their respective genres, but they're not as common as you think. It's one thing if you say a game has unimaginative plot or no plot at all or whatever. That's reasonable. New, imaginative elements are harder to come by.

Stating games like this as your favorite form of interactive media, to avid gamers, is about as boring as saying your favorite game is "Tetris".
"Avid gamers" meaning what? You shouldn't just instantly discredit someone else's tastes because you think you have better tastes. Avid gamers could mean a bunch of different things. Maybe you should learn what subjectivity is before you make blanket statements. Actually, just don't make blanket statements.

Nothing wrong with enjoying it, but if it's your favorite, it likely means you don't play a wide selection of video games
My vast collection of games across many systems in basically every genre would like to have a word with you.
In this guy's eyes? No, rhythm games don't have soul. My opinion? If you enjoy it, it has soul. You wouldn't be playing it if it didn't have some sort of major effect on you.
