I can see why some people don't like it but not because of the announcer, it's because a lot of the songs are something that people wouldn't expect to be put into an arcade DDR game. But is the game really all that bad?
I think it's one of the weaker arcade games in the series but I have to admit I did like a lot of the charts as well as some of the new songs. That's saying much compared to some of the Wii games like DDR 2010.

The cabinet is horrible. Betson fucked the machine beyond belief.

We're not talking about the cabinets, just the game.

On the bounce was the only thing to come out of that game that I liked.
The announcer was the most annoying in the franchise, as well.

Also Horatio.
Horatio was probably one of the most unique boss songs in all of DDR (until Izumi's <INSERT COUNTRY><INSERT WEATHER> Dance ) series.

Unfortunately ruined by a Shock Arrow chart.

Among the songs not named, I like Ubertreffen, SUPER SAMURAI, Horatio, and 30 Lives (Although some of those are guilty pleasures ). I don't really hate DDR X, I just don't like it as much as the other games. The announcer is pretty annoying, but I always thought he had this charm to him. I love how hammy he is. We're dancin', we're groovin', you know this flow is movin'!
...Well, okay, that is pretty annoying.

To be fair, I actually liked the cabinet and the songlist. The only thing about DDR X I thought was horrible is the theme.
Besides, great difficulty scale.

Short answer: yes.
Long answer: The AC version (other than the cabs) is pretty nice. Yeah, there were shock arrow charts, but those are sort of a "bonus." You don't -have- to play them, and there's always an expert, shock-less chart right above it. It brought the X-scale to rate difficulty, which is extremely handy and way better than the old scale. The announcer was annoying, though, particularly when he'd... start singing (did they ever take that out?). It also had a pretty bomb-diggity songlist. I'm looking at you, Fluorish, Votum Stellarum and Dance Celebration. Plus, some epic revivals from SN and SN2 (well Votum Stellarum falls into this category anyway, as well as A LOVE LIKE THIS, Uranus, MARS WAR 3, etc). Maybe it's not to the same quality as X2, nor 2013, but it's not... bad, like so many people say it is. Oh yeah, and the interface is cool, too.

You're going combo wombo! Keep up the perfect comb-*great*
I've never played an X cabinet and I hope I never do. Betson + RAW THRILLS screwed it up for everyone. I think the hate is well deserved. Most of the X-Special charts are just really dumb crossovers, etc; there was nothing special that came out of X

Besides the awful cabinet that was exported over here instead of that nice colorful, lighting up one that the Asia region got, the song list isn't... That bad. The problem is that X2 was just that good in comparison. The new rating scale is a helluva lot better, imo, so they had that going for it. The only beef I have with that announcer was when he started doing that singing, because I'd prefer not to have a 120 BPM vocal going to Burning Heat. I really like the Saber Wing series, on the bounce, Horatio, though a bit underwhelmed by Trigger.
Other than that, I would give the mix, not including the cabinet a low 4 out of 5 Okie faces.

A. There's TWO announcers, Justin and Wil-Dog - members of Ozomatli, not one like everyone seems to claim. [Source: X CS]
B. AC speaking, yeah. I think the game gets a lot of flak, and the US Betson cabinets don't help, but for what it's worth, it's a pretty solid song list with a ton of fun charts. And you get to play as Jenny in a tight leather bodysuit; what's not to love about that??
C. CS speaking, so very much yes. I get that some of the licenses are odd and Street Master Mode was laughable, but the rest of the songlist more than makes up for it. The KOs are good, the revivals (as predictable as they are) are good, and Street Master Mode is cute and kinda fun, albeit linear as hoot.
I think people should at least try to give this entry a chance. It's not as bad as, say, SN2.
/onions (except for A., which is fact)

correction, that was Japan only.
personally I'm okay with X. any sort of new mix is always well-received in my country (especially since we always get new mixes 1 year late), everyone was eager to play the new songs. announcer was annoying, yes, but i got used to it (except that goddamn line where the announcer was actually singing (one King_Mew mentioned), thank god they got rid of that line).

for some reason i feel that people who hate shock arrow charts a lot don't know how they're supposed to be played... also recent mixes' SA charts' quality has improved. Horatio is rather fun imo. at least it wasn't boring shit like Flight of the Phoenix .
I've played all the X-Specials, they're not that bad, actually. I remember PARANOiA Rebirth and CANDY★ having some cool footswitching action going, MAXX Unlimited is actually pretty decent and is one of the easiest 18 to score on for me. MAX 300 is pretty confusing and weird but once you take the time to learn and understand what's going on (which usually isn't the case for the general populace), it's a pretty fun play with all the footswitching going on (someone mentioned the satisfaction is akin to cracking a puzzle). On doubles though... they're a different story altogether. (but hey, who plays doubles???) Other X double charts are pretty cool tho.
Oh yeah, DDR X finally brought back EDIT DATA and that's a really cool thing since I get to make my own bridging charts (or charts to drill certain aspects).
altogether, IMO DDR X is overhated, yes. (though i can't weigh in on how horrible the betson cab was; only experienced the X2 cabs)

No, I've just been spoiled by songs with mines in them in ITG, aka the game that made them work. How are they supposed to be played? I get the feeling that they're supposed to add difficulty by making you watch your step, but why make a Shock Arrow ALL 4 PANELS and nothing else? It really limits what it can be. Meanwhile, in VerTex^2...

it could be really messy with singular shock arrows... i mean look at what they did with Pluto The First lol

Damn, son, I'll be trying to do that in my sleep. But, yeah, it could be, but if it's done properly, it'll be a lot better than filling all four arrows and you can STILL fill all four if you so wish.

Well, let's look at the details here. X was the first game to use shock arrows, so of course there was going to be some dud charts. They were in an infantile stage, and I doubt Konami really knew what to do with them. Same case with freeze arrows in MAX; hell, look at charts like THE SHINING POLARIS and try to tell me that they knew what they were doing with freezes.
But the thing is? They got better. When they got into the swing of using them, they did some pretty damn great things with them. Some duds too, but hey - they can't all be winners.
Granted, Horatio was inexcusable, and even though they fixed it for AC release, it still was needlessly difficult. But I wouldn't hold it to them. It was an experiment, and they clearly learned from it.
But yeah. Horatio (especially for CS) was still pretty bad, even with all that being said.

If it wasn't for the cabinets being so bad it would have certainly been a step in the right direction - I actually like most of the Xmixes, Horatio , and Trigger, as well as Super Samurai and On the Bounce.
I'm rather disappointed the Xmixes in particular are X exclusives because outside of Asia I'm not able to find a JP X (since the US cabs are oh so good), and that the non-boss songs are pretty forgettable to me. Overall, not bad though.
Most of the hate should be directed to Raw Thrills/Betson, I feel like if we didn't have the pad issue that the mix would have been a bit more polarizing than usual, due to the announcer/interface/rating shifts, but nothing like the poor reputation it has now.
