Cheers for this guide, CMG - I didn't even know about playdeb until reading this post. Until now I've always been using OpenITG which was an absolute bitch to get up and running on my computer on Linux. I'll be sure to give playdeb a go when I next boot into Linux. Currently running it from an external hard drive as a test but I'm confident enough to use it as my daily driver once my SSD arrives.

Couple of other things I'd like to add to the music production part: Renoise is a very feature-rich extensible DAW with a tracker interface, available for Linux. You may also want to check out Bitwig but I haven't used it. It seems pretty good from the videos I've watched of it however.
Regardless, installing and setting up JACK server is invaluable for music production on Linux. I might knock up a guide when I'm booted into linux if there's enough interest.

For reference, I'm using Crunchbang waldorf, upgraded to debian testing.
