For many years I've been playing the same DDRUK and ITG simfiles without checking if anything newer was available. Recently I found this site & started catching up on everything I've missed, including the switch to the new 1-20 scale.

Having old-scale and new-scale files in Stepmania messes up difficulty sorting & also messes up courses select random songs by difficulty. I'm not really interested in converting all the old stuff to the new scale, I'd much rather convert the newer stuff to either the ITG 1-13 scale or the old DDR 1-10 scale (both of which are pretty much compatible with each other, except that some DDR 10's would be 11 or 12 on ITG).

I'd prefer to use a formula & some bulk search/replaces rather than having to handle each song individually. It doesn't have to be incredibly accurate, I just need to figure out something in the ballpark.

I'm trying to put together something like this as an example:
20 -> 13
19 -> 13
18 -> 12
17 -> 12
...

That may be wrong already, since I played an 18 & it was more like an ITG 11 than a 12.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

In general it's probably something in this ballpark:

New Scale - Old Scale
20 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 13
19 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 13
18 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 12
17 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 12/11
16 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 11
15 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 10
14 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 10/9
13 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 9
12 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 9/8
11 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 8
10 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 8/7
9 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 7/6
8 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 6/5
7 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 5
6 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 4
5 -> -> -> -> -> -> -> 4/3

Beyond that point I dunno. I'm sure you can use your judgment.

Conveting DDR scale to ITG scale doesn't make sense.

ITG ratings are genreally focused on how physically draining the song is. Some really tricky songs will still get low ratings because they are not hard to pass.
(I often score 96%+ on a dumb streamy 14, and get 92% on a 12 with 24th bursts and gimmicks and footswitch hells)

DDR ratings focuses on the complexity of patterns.
16 can be as fast and as draining as 18, but 18 will be full of nightmarish patterns that will require ninja foot techniques.
(Triple journey 16 is basically dragonforce, ngo 18 is slow but has retarded patterns)

Also, for DDR, I recommend you stick to the new scale, I makes much more sense.
As for converting the ratings automatically, I dunno, probably doable with some notepad++ magic, didn't bother trying acutally.

I agree it's pretty annoying to have the 2 scales conflictiong in your stepmania.
That's why I have Stepmania for DDR and oITG for ITG Green Grin

This on its own is a fine answer.

Going further on the DDR vs. ITG rating scales point, when itg customs were in their infancy there were a lot more charts with ambigious patterning (not nessecarily crossovers and turns but seemingly forced doublesteps) that contributed to higher difficulty for songs with slower/less steps, nowadays the patterning is usually easy to sightread.

This being said ambigious patterning can contribute to higher difficulty because of needing to expend more energy to perform them - see PRevo Challenge for the most extreme example but things like New Decade feel like that to me too. For this reason I rate the higher DDR charts higher than most people seem to do because it expends a lot of energy like a reasonable stream.

In conclusion, I would do something like this:

DDR 19 -> ITG 14
DDR 18 -> ITG 13
17 -> 12
16 -> 11
15 -> 10
14 -> 9

then from there Astroman is spot on.

On the other hand I'm pretty bad at technical patterns so I could be completely off base.

"five minute white boy challenge"
I find ITG stuff like Pandemonium Challenge a hell of a lot harder than any 18 or 19 in DDR's 1-20 scale. Maybe 2013 will be updated with a 20 made by jun or TAG and it'll be 200 BPM 16th stream crossovers with jumps randomly thrown in, then DDR will actually have something to challenge the insane bastards in the ITG community like Aoreo or Mad Matt. Until then, ITG's 12s, 13s and 14s are in a class of their own.

Approximately nobody asked for this song to be included. Least popular decision by the Japanese since Nintendo released the Wii U.

Like what FAXX Challenge, FELM Challenge, and New Decade Challenge have already done years ago? (400BPM 8ths = 200BPM 16ths) 200BPM is honestly not all that fast anymore. It needs to be more along the lines of 230-250BPM with 16ths, or 180-200BPM with 24ths.

In regards to adding random jumps, why not add jacks and foot-switches as well? Wink

Until the day I see DDR having "Tachyon-Series Hard" stepcharts, I don't see this happening.
