It's supposed to be aimed for kids under 7. Also if you don't like it, just don't get it.

You got to remember that this 2DS is catered for kids. It's the size of the regular 3DS (not the XL), and most importantly, its cheaper. It's a new system for the parents to get for their child. Nintendo is at the point that they can make mistakes (and they have time and time again). You raised a good point about the 3D Slider deal, But Nintendo is just making a new system to make some money...Remember, These are the same people that rehash Super Mario Bros. on the Virtual Console tons of times...//

I think this topic is a waste.... our opinion is our own. Yes I agree it is so soon but nintendo is doing it still.
Now, why say something is dumb cus you don't like it. It is worth the money for people like me...
Doesn't already have a 3DS
Hates the 3D function
Hates hinges
wants one cheaper
can I go on or can you see that maybe someone out there will like it?

Since you mentioned, I may as well share this bit.
As far as I know, one of the possible reasons why this won't be selling in Japan is because the 3DS already has a big coverage of the target demographic (it's treated pretty general purpose in Japan, and not 'just a game device' like other places).

Soooooooo you're telling me that when the 3DS & 3DSXL already came out that kid's under the age of 7 didn't already have it or had difficult playing the console? Please... kids now-a-days don't need defending when it comes to technology. If my cousin's daughter can operate an ipad perfectly at the age of 2, then kids aren't gonna have an issue with the 3DS or 3DSXL
Some people might want a cheaper 3DS for their kids that won't hurt their eyes with the 3D function. The 3D function is supposed to be for kids 7+ only. And again, if you don't like it, just don't buy it. I don't see why you have to complain about it.

There's a parental setting for disabling it, isn't there?

It looks useless to me, what with how it's just a DS where the screen can get smashed more easily without some cover and it doesn't fit in your pocket. But if it sells, power to Nintendo.
Nintendo probably knows their big characters rake in money (hence the Mario "rehashes"), so any other odd thing they try isn't the end of the world. If I had a dollar for every time someone doubted Nintendo, I'd have my own arcade now. ;>>
Edit: Not really fair to call it dumb; it's just something I wouldn't want.

1. Again, easily can be turned off with the slider on the left
2. I love how you keep re-iterating that "don't like it, don't get it" line like it actually means something. People are still free to speak their minds about stuff. Don't try to sweep things like this under the rug because you're so easy to accept it ;)

1. On the right*. Can also be easily turned on without any supervision, leaving their eyes to get damaged.
2. ok

You can also break hinges as well, IIRC it's the most common broken thing in clamshell-design devices.
Also the "if you don't like it, don't buy it" is valid cuz you have that "It's A Waste Of Money" on the thread title. Don't like it? Don't buy it, no money wasted.
Also it looks rather robust too, I think it wouldn't damage the console much for kids who keep dropping their stuff. (Meanwhile my 3DS got broken when I dropped it once)

I think it was also designed for durability, but I'm not sure. But yeah, it does seem like the screens can easily get damaged.

The 2DS is geared towards children under the age of 7. The 3D display was removed for that target demographic as it can lead to permanent eye damage. As aforementioned, the casing to the system also looks more durable to withstand child use (it almost resembles the plastic to the Wii Mini, which has similar intentions as the 2DS). As for the screens, who knows how much they can take.
One thing I am somewhat disappointed to see though is that Nintendo did not go too far to improve the system's battery life.

Nintendo has made multiple versions of their handhelds since the original Game Boy. This is just the next generation of the practice. It diversifies their product line so they can reach a wider audience and/or late adopters with more specialized systems, rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all concept. It's smart business and they're definitely positioning themselves for a strong holiday season with this and Pokemon X/Y releasing on the same day.
As for the form factor, there's more to it than just durability, which has already been mentioned. Tablets are the thing to have right now. I'm not sure of the exact size but the 2DS looks smaller than most tablets. I'm sure people won't have problems with the new design if they're already willing to carry a marginally more inconvenient device everywhere.

Makes me wonder how long until we get a chance to hold another handheld with a durability that equals the Game Boy.

Interesting that you pretty much ignored the notion of it being cheaper, which, surprise, is actually pretty important when it comes to deciding which handheld the parent will buy. If I see a console that does the exact same thing as the more expensive model, but costs less and doesn't have the one feature that could potentially damage my child's eyes, i'm probably going to buy that cheaper one, since as a whole it's a much better buy. I'm a legal guardian for two kids, I know a thing or two about keeping in mind what is good and bad for my children. Obviously if you're not a child and can afford to buy your own handhelds, you can decide for yourself if you want the 3D or if you want the cheaper model without it.
Having an opinion is fine, but make sure you know what you're talking about before stating your opinion, and be willing to pay attention when others counter your opinion with facts. Like, for example, "Some people might want a cheaper 3DS for their kids that won't hurt their eyes with the 3D function.", "3D function is supposed to be for kids 7+ only", and "It's supposed to be aimed for kids under 7". If you have no interest in buying it, don't. Assuming you're not a little kid, i'm sure you can deal with the idea that people might actually like something you don't.
