There are some new screenshot/mockups being posted, which is great! There's a nice variety of colors schemes like:

DJ OMiY's Silver/Yellow/Blue
SilverHawke's Yellow/White
Ali Uchiha's Earth (Zelda) Tones
typeChaos's Green and Silver

Each is essentially a coverflow modeled after/inspired by Konami's X2/X3 layout, however. SilverHawke's does break that mold by offering two degrees of freedom for navigation, which I like! (I liked it enough to attempt to build something similar, independently in SM5 as my own screenshot indicated.)

Personally, I am all for innovative thinking, because otherwise we'd just be reskinning the same base theme with new colors and static PNGs.

With SM5 still being actively developed, it's very possible to come up with an out-of-the-box idea, create a visual mockup, post it here with a question like, "how would I got about achieving this functionality in my theme? I know it's new and never been done before but I think it'd be cool and worthwhile because..." Even if your idea is currently "impossible," the necessary functionality could be incorporated before SM5 final is released, but you'd really need to explain how it was innovative and why it was worthwhile.

The why is pretty important, perhaps just as important as the mockup itself. A cool-looking mockup can be made even more potent with a solid verbal justification.

Alright, so I've spent the past few days cleaning up my concept, giving it a sort of "theme," and hashing out a lot of the design choices. I think that I've got something worth while.

Pack Wheel Mock-up. The pack list slides back behind the pack jackets after selecting the pack with the green button.

The motif of the theme that I came up with was "fruit." I had the idea that, in an options menu before starting up the theme you could select a "flavor" such as watermelon, apple, banana, pear, etc. This would recolor the theme based on which fruit you chose. This idea was inspired by the Simply Love Theme's use of color scheme selection. In the background of the theme, the fruit of choice would be falling (not too much that it is distracting, but enough for some flare.)

It navigates as I described before. Right now I will describe the controls for use on an ITG Dedicab with two arrow buttons, a red, and a green button. You would flip through the packs in the Pack Wheel until you found the one you were looking for and select it with the green button. The Pack Wheel would slide back under the pack jackets to reveal the song wheel, where you could navigate through the songs in a similar fashion. By double tapping red you could back out of a folder and back into the Pack Wheel. While in the Song Wheel, you could hold the two arrows and the red button to flip the jacket on the far right of the screen. This would should you additional information about the song.

Below is a link to a gif that sort of depicts this functionality:

I think this sort of navigation can help to make moving between songs and folder move apparent and intuitive while making use of both list and cover flow mechanics. I chose to make text as clear and readable as possible to provide maximum functionality.

I also wanted to provide the user with as much information as possible as fast as possible. This is why I chose to list the BPM in the song list. I also added some letters next to the currently highlighted pack in the Pack Wheel. Each letter corresponds to a difficulty (N = Novice, E = Easy, M = Medium, H = Hard, Ex = Expert). This small list of letters next to the pack name tells the user what difficulties are in the pack. For example, DDR X3 has all 5 letters listed, but a pack with only expert and hard difficulties on their songs would only show H and Ex.
