Hey guys, sorry if this was answered somewhere on the site, but I've sifted through pages in the simulation category looking for an answer, and couldn't find any.

Basically, I have two cobalt fluxes, roughly 5 years old. They both work perfectly fine on CS Ps2 versions of DDR, and I am able to achieve AA's on a regular basis with them on all difficulties. However, when I use them on Stepmania, the arrows trigger too frequently, especially during jacks and quick bursts of notes on higher BPM songs. I get broken combos very frequently because of it, and only get full combos if I am lucky. Also, untouched arrows can trigger when I am pressing the other arrows.

I'm getting really frustrated, I have cleaned the pads, tried tightening and loosening the screws, and tried deactivating the top corner panels, figuring they were the cause of the unnecessary sensitivity, but all netted the same result:. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks to anyone who can answer or try to help!

What version of Windows are you using, and have you adjusted the USB polling rate?

If the polling rate is too small, then the Windows USB driver might be misinterperiting exactly when you're stepping onto and letting go of the panels?

Sorry for the late response, I was in school.

It's Windows Vista 7, I believe. Iv'e heard of that term before a while ago, but what is the polling rate? Also, how can I adjust it? Can I do it in Stepmania?

Interestingly, xepheroth never stated that s/he was using Windows.

There is Windows Vista, and there is Windows 7. (There are other versions of Windows, too, like Windows XP, and Windows 8). Unfortunately, there is no such thing as Windows Vista 7.

If you are using a Windows operating system (as opposed to Mac OS, Linux, Solaris, BeOS, etc...), then you can determine which version you are actually running relatively easily. There are two ways that I know of:

Method A:
Press and hold the "Windows Key" on your keyboard, and then tap the "pause/break" key.

Method B:
Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" from the context menu.

Either way, a dialogue box will pop up and give you information about your computer.

Let's start there.

Okay.

I don't have a quick, easy answer for your rapid-triggering problems, but maybe we can work through this and figure something out.

Have you tried other/older versions of Stepmania and, if so, does the same problem also occur in those?

Other versions of Stepmania include:
OpenITG
Stepmania 3.9

Let us know.

Sorry for the late bump, I've been busy lately. So I tried them all...and they all have the same effect. Same, random arrow presses and broken combos. I'm starting to think it's actually the Cobalt Fluxes themselves.

You have to change something in the ini file (if it's OpenITG). I'm sorry but I can't recall what was the value that has to be changed.

I see. I can't seem to find the program files for open itg, it just downloaded the program and a few songs and courses with it, though.

Do you know if that can apply to Stepmania 5? I like the themes better for that one, and its my favorite version so far.

Yeah, there's a setting called InputDebounceTime in Preferences.ini in %appdata%\StepMania 5\Save (hint: put that in a new Explorer window). What that does is basically ignore input for the next X seconds to prevent that problem from happening. It should usually be set to a very small value, so try a small number first.

I know where you are talking about, but for some reason, I can't find preferences.ini in the data folder. I even downloaded Stepmania 5 and its still missing under data?

It should be something like this:

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\StepMania 5\Save\Preferences.ini

Preferences.ini is nowhere on my computer for some reason, i sifted through every file. I even redownloaded Stepmania 5 and its still the only file missing. Has this ever happened before? And wouldn't stepmania refuse to function without preferences.ini?

You are correct.

In older versions of Stepmania, Preferences.ini was called Stepmania.ini, and it was located in ./[Stepmania Directory]/Data/ This is no longer the case with Stepmania 5.

Try bringing up a run dialog (windows key + R) and entering this:

Quote
%appdata%

This will bring you to your application data directory, which should contain a Stepmania 5 directory, which will contain a Save directory. Preferences.ini will be in there.

Alright, I tried this, and it keeps giving me a warning message:

"Windows cannot find '%appdata%.' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Seeing this, I tried putting "appdata" instead. A window popped up, but no Stepmania 5 directory.

After googling around a bit, it seems that you may need to turn on hidden folders to view %appdata% in Windows Vista. I apologize; I don't have a copy of Vista and was just guessing.

So, try these instructions, and then try putting %appdata% into your run dialog again. Let us know.

So I tried all the instructions you gave me, and It still tells me there is no trace of it on the computer with the same message as before X__X
