That message is what I get when trying to start up Stepmania 5... Apparently this "error" prevents me from starting it altogether.
Does anyone have an idea of what's causing this error, or better yet, how to get rid of it?

I think it must've been an early version or something (got it last fall IIRC). I'd later solve this error by downloading a newer version instead.

try unofficial nightly builds. It's newer than what official SM5 has.

I'm just going to jump in to tell you to use the latest version from code.google.com/p/sm-ssc. Don't use nightly builds unless you're testing, they're probably broken.

nightly builds has more updates than what latest version from code.google.com/p/sm-ssc has.

more updates doesn't mean it's better. what if all the updates are shitty, and don't work properly.

Users still can't get out of the bugs from official one (see http://ssc.ajworld.net/sm-ssc/bugtracker/my_view_page.php). Updates do not always limited to NEW FEATURES, they have also BUG FIXES too. I also don't like the installer version of that official one.

They also forgot that official ones are also based from nightly builds too, but lesser updates. They can release anything from nightly builds anytime to sm-ssc google and call it "official".

The nightlies are not official because the nightlies are not official. There is actually a decision process leading up to a release. It's not like some guy comes out of the corner and yells "OKAY, STEPMANIA 5 BETA 2 COMES OUT NOW". There are goals set for that release that have to be met before it comes out. The nightlies don't have any of that and are just meant to be a way for developers to look at the changes they have made in action.
