So I know there's an unlock system for SM 3.9 and I've heard there's one for SM5, but I can't find anything about it so any information about how to use it and if it even exists would be extremely helpful.

In theory there is an unlock system in place, but the code in-game is bugged or something and doesn't allow the unlock system to work correctly. As far as I know, no one on the dev team has ever bothered to try and fix it since there wasn't enough people using that feature, if they even could.

The beauty of StepMania 5 is that the Lua integration is so that you could build your own unlock system from scratch with an unnecessary amount of scripting. And that's the way it should be. A feature designed to intentionally limit the game shouldn't be hard-coded, but the theming code should be dynamic enough that someone could roll their own if they wanted to create a perfectionist's theme of an existing DDR game. Or to have fun with something custom.

Do you know where I could find a tutorial for how to do this then since I have almost no coding experience?Post #6 · Posted at 2013-03-03 11:50:01pm 11.1 years ago

The Documentation folder in StepMania 5 details to what extent Lua can be employed in StepMania 5 (I think), and since Lua is an open-source programming language you can just google it to get code dumps and tutorials.

I wasn't aware that there was anything wrong with the unlock system. In fact, I was under the impression it worked just fine. What's wrong with it?

Also, how do you use attacks in Stepmania. I know you have to program it into the .sm file but I'm not sure how

Press Enter in the editor and choose "Modify attacks at current beat" in SM5. I'm not sure how to use the attack editor in other versions, if one exists.
