With the removal of coin mode in the latest build of StepMania 5, Aldo Fregoso, the lead programmer for StepMania AMX, announced that he feels it's time for his project to unfork and merge back with the main StepMania project.
I don't recall that being the 'main reason" for his fork existing, but to have all the improvements made especially for AMX trickle back into StepMania proper is definitely cool news. The sooner the 3.9 codebase can be fully laid to rest, the better.

Will they accept donations? The Greatest Of Stepmania is made with Stepmania 3.9 AMX. If original BGanimations, Pump It Up styled freeze arrows, and the ability to select different game modes within the song list is ported over - I will change programs.

Well, the developers of SM had a falling out over this: aldo_mx and Vhyd ended up leaving after a fight on IRC between the devs over the matter, and shakesoda undid the changes by leaving the following message:
He does have a point.
Unfortunately, this is just the cliffsnotes version.

AM's broken business model has nothing to do with us. Gimping coin modes won't
magically stop piracy, it will lead to more fragmentation in the community
than there already is (and there's a lot), and hurt adoption.
StepMania itself is a free game, but it's entirely within users rights granted
by the license to sell it. This is what you agree to by committing to it. It's
not our business if some choose to use their powers for less-than-good. If you
want to stop your content from being used with pay mode, we should think up
another way than ripping the whole damn thing out.

Doesn't look too good right now. For now I am counting on running TGOSm on 3.9 AMX.

SM5 is better still imo. Don't use a fork where the source code isn't even publicly released; but yes, you actually can change styles on the song selection screen on SM5
And do you really need to promote that in every post?

Welp... That was cute while it lasted. And honestly the only version it hurts is AMX because...
...this.

Yeah; the developers also believe that he may have been violating the GPL on certain components too (the main SM code is MIT license, which is basically a simple attribution license that doesn't have as many complex requirements as the GPL. But certain encoders and such are not), but still. You should know EXACTLY what has been done.
