I think that all bemani games have suffered in quality tremendously since they started relying heavily on across the board online events. DDR has been hit especially hard, as DDR 2013 has very few original songs and doesn't have much identity of it's own.
It feels nowadays like you better like jubeat and reflec beat+, or else you're going to feel very alienated.

I'm indifferent with the song selections in DDR 2013/2014 and don't care about "DDR losing its identity" or something like that. as long as the charts are awesome, I'm in.
I hate X3 primarily because of the CS crossovers' chart which is just... meh. when I saw DDR 2013, I think this is a good turning point to DDR series as the charts were good.

X3 was gonna be a wonky mix to begin with Naoki handing over the reigns to TAG for DDR.

Naoki hasn't been involved with the DDR AC series since SuperNOVA 2. Michael Borenstein took over the role of 'Sound Director' from Naoki for DDR X, and then TAG took over for DDR X2 and X3, due to Borenstein's death.
X3 was definately wonky, but I think that was more to do with the badly executed "vs 2nd Mix" gimmick, and the huge amount of Hottest Party songs. I imagine it came across as a much, much better game to the Japanese audience, because a fair ammount of those Hottest Party songs are really great. It was just a dissapointing to a savy american audience that the real 'meat' of the game was songs we'd already seen, while the ones we hadn't seen before were kind of 'meh'.

^X2 had a heavy Universe3 influence and it's a shame that X2 didn't get even more of those songs.

I played DDR a few weeks ago and I was really shocked when I discovered the new interface. Personally I don't like it, because I think it makes the game look very "casual".
I have a question regarding the extra stage. I played using my e-amusement card as always, made it to the song list and did a few songs. I use to collect enough stars to play the extra stage, but not this time:
- On the song results screen, I didn't manage to check anywhere my current number of Stars
- No extra stage for me, even after performing 3 AA FC
- I only received one star in total, being the Daily Star at the end of my game
Sorry if somebody mentioned this earlier, but what happened to the Extra Stage system? Do you need to play in a specific mode to receive some Stars after you play songs? (through Passeli maybe?)

No you can't. You need to use paseli to enable extra stage system.

Technically yes, you can. But you need PASELI to actually access EXTRA STAGE. Even if you collected 9 daily stars, you won't be able to access EXTRA STAGE unless you use PASELI.

Thank you for your answers. I guess I will have to play with PASELI from next time. 
For some reasons, the arcade I go decided to charge a higher price for PASELI users - 115 yen instead of 100 ... but guess it is worth it because that's 33 yen a song, making 4 songs for 115 yen instead of 133.
