I kinda knew most people wouldn't want to upgrade just because of the Metro screen, but you guys should at least try it for a couple of days on a different partition or something.
The Metro design has already been in place on the Xbox for about a year now, and I am still not a fan of the design. It may be another platform, but I found both seem to have the issue of burying commonly used functions.

I've been playing around with the betas here and there. I think I can get used to the "missing" start button (hint, its just buried RIGHT in the bottom corner, and that spot even works on earlier versions), and I've been using the "press Windows key and start typing" method to launch programs a lot lately too (which still works).

I don't agree with some of the design changes (Hey, is it technologically impossible to ship both the Metro visual style AND the Windows 8 RP version of Aero Glass too?), but it does feel a lot faster. I might install it on my laptop, but I'm really saving it for the new computer I'm plotting out building.

I'm not planning to use Windows 8. I'm perfectly fine with Windows 7. Windows Vista Sucks at not breaking, and Windows XP is okay, but I like Windows 7.

No because i read somewhere it will be incompatible in some way with Minecraft.

I love Minecraft.

Can't live without it.

Therefore kiss my ass W8.

I haven't had any problems with Minecraft. Still works for me.

I've also dual booted both Windows 8 and 7 and didn't have any problems.

...

Gonna get Windows 8.
Thanks for the info! Happy

I've got Windows 8 already in my laptop. It's waay smoother than Windows 7. Maybe it's because Microsoft has moved alot of things to Metro instead of explorer shell.

The only thing that doesn't work to me is an old rhythm game called O2Jam.
Everything else works fine and it's really cool, my laptop looks like a tablet now, even though it's controlled with TouchPad & running x86 Tongue

I'm planning on buying the microsoft surface which has windows 8 so I don't have a choice.
I was going to buy the surface thats coming out in a few days but then I did a little more research and found out its not running true windows 8. Its running Windows RT which is practically windows 8 but with a bunch of limitations. As far as I can tell, RT will mostly just run apps like other tablets. Since this is the case, I will wait 3 more months and just buy the surface pro since it runs windows 8 pro and it seems like you can use it like any old desktop which is what I am going for.

considering. because with the rumor that Windows 8 won't work dual-booted for some reason, I'm afraid upgrading it because I'm currently dual-booting my laptop with Windows 7 and Vista.

I'm currently dual-booting Windows 8 with Linux Mint. Works like a charm. o_o;;

Yup, Surface has ARM processor which will only run metro Apps. It cannot run .exe compiled for x86 architecture (aka our PCs)

I may get a Windows 8 based phone, but as my desktop OS? Not a chance. The interface doesn't seem to lend itself well to multi tasking. I know, the desktop mode is still there, but I prefer Windows 7's desktop.

Okay; my dad (under my insistence after he saw Windows 8 devices at the store) upgraded his old, about 5-year old laptop straight from Vista to Windows 8 over the weekend. So far, in his definition of real world use, he actually loves it ... with some caveats:

Firstly, the installation (even from Vista, where an upgrade loses applications but not user profiles) was very painless from top to bottom. I was expecting the worst when it came to driver compatibility since it was an older laptop, but it automatically retrieved all the relevant drivers on its own., and just about everything worked out of the box. Wireless, graphics, touchpad, webcam, etc.

On the new interface, it's a mixed reaction. He was a bit frustrated at first, but I really think it was his slightly broken mouse causing more of these issues, however. He likes the Start screen, and after I showed him some of the shortcuts, he seemed to be figuring things out at a reasonable rate (yes, we've gone ahead two versions!). He also doesn't mind the Metro-fied desktop theme, because he's more of a "function" person than a form person (and clearly, the interface in his opinion, actually works quite well. It's just the apps that are the mixed bag).

On Metro apps, we've agreed that a lot of the core apps are a little too basic for their own good, or just a little too tablet-oriented. (case in point, the People/Messenger/Mail apps) Thankfully he got his sanity back after installing their desktop equivalents. We also agreed that this new platform will hopefully get better, but its just suffering from some Early Installment Weirdness, that's all.

Performance-wise, it FLIES. This laptop has never been that fast, ever. Either that or it was the fact that the upgrade wiped out HP's crapware too. But still, if it's that fast on 5-year old hardware (i.e. about 1.6ghz Core 2 Duo), just think about how much faster it'll on brand new processors.

Our verdict: Especially going from Vista, best $40 ever spent.

"lol"
That's what happened to my old-ass single core laptop when I installed Windows 8 on it. It became faster than it was when it had Windows XP installed, just the interface was laggy. And I can't believe I just noticed that I said that Metro sucks ass on the W8 Release Preview Thread. I don't even remember posting that LOL.

We upgraded 4 PCs (my gaming PC, housemate's gaming PC, old-ass Laptop and £90 box that sit under the TV to play movies and Stepmania) to Windows 8, and happily paid £25 to buy a copy for each of them, because the performance was just so much better than any other OS.

Now that we are here in 2013, Microsoft is yet to deliver on the idea that Windows 8 is designed for a whole set of new features that will revolutionize computers. Windows 7 has been working perfectly from me since day 1. It's going to be a tough act to follow to out do Windows 7 and probably won't happen until Windows 9. Maybe by then we will need desktop computers that function like smart phones.

Most of the W8 machines I get I'll have to modify, typically with something like Classic Shell. Installing that on W8+ will make sure it goes directly to the Desktop and gives you the Start Menu that many complain about missing.

Performance boost aside, it's honestly not that big of a jump. The UI is still horrid and bogs down older systems quite a bit. I've had a lot more people make the jump to Apple products over it, bring their systems back entirely regardless or if they keep their old systems and are worried about XP going out of style in April some even consider Linux. Specifically, Mint (typically with MATE or Cinnamon). I've had single-core Atom-based netbooks fly on it. I've had older P4s w/ 512MB of RAM run incredibly fast on it and many like the interface and how they're reminded of XP because of it.

At least on a consumer standpoint that I see walk into my office, it hasn't been a very great run for W8 unmodified. Many complain about it more than Vista.
