"A Paranoia Survivor"
So, I'm still using 3.95 as I find it to be extremely stable and easy to work with. My question involves getting all custom mods to show up in various themes. I know it's dependent on whether the theme has this enabled, but I was wondering if there were a setting in each theme that I could edit that would force it to show all custom speed mods/play mods?

Example:

In Takuya's Extreme theme, I can get my C200, C300 and C400 mods to show up and I can use them.
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q38/Dark_Rubes/graphics%20and%20stuff/customspeedmods01.png

In the default SM theme, I can only see the C200 and C400 theme. I'm assuming it's because the other mods are there (x0.25, X0.50 etc.).
http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q38/Dark_Rubes/graphics%20and%20stuff/customspeedmods02.png

So, my question is, is there a global file that can be edited in each theme that tells it what mods to show?

no you need to add the speedmods separate for every single theme, there is no global file in pre-sm5 versions
so that means, you have to open the metric.ini of the theme you want to use and go to
[ScreenOptionsMaster]

under there edit the

Speed=13
SpeedDefault=mod,1x,no randomspeed
Speed,1=mod,0.25x;name,x0.25
Speed,2=mod,0.50x;name,x0.50
Speed,3=mod,0.75x;name,x0.75
Speed,4=mod,1x;name,x1
Speed,5=mod,1.5x;name,x1.5
Speed,6=mod,2x;name,x2
Speed,7=mod,3x;name,x3
Speed,8=mod,4x;name,x4
Speed,9=mod,8x;name,x8
Speed,10=mod,C200;name,C200
Speed,11=mod,C400;name,C400
Speed,12=mod,C666;name,C666
Speed,13=mod,1x,200% randomspeed;name,Random

to w/e you want, like you can add your own values,

then you need to go to the Languages/english.ini

and in there add to
[OptionNames]

the values you added to [ScreenOptionsMaster]

so ya have fun with that and enjoy using the most unstable sm version in the history of sm

On another note, if you plan on making more speed mods, the SPEED= at the top should be adjusted accordingly.

Mine looks like this (on oITG, which is far more stable than 3.95):

Speed=43
SpeedDefault=mod,1x
Speed,1=mod,1x;name,1x
Speed,2=mod,1.25x;name,1.25x
Speed,3=mod,1.5x;name,1.5x
Speed,4=mod,1.75x;name,1.75x
Speed,5=mod,2x;name,2x
Speed,6=mod,2.25x;name,2.25x
Speed,7=mod,2.5x;name,2.5x
Speed,8=mod,2.75x;name,2.75x

Thank you. All I needed was which file I had to edit overall.

And as a side note, I have zero problems running the version I have. Whatever works for me, works for me. Whatever works for you all, works for you all.

Why aren't you using SM5a3 (or 3.9+/Redux if you're so inclined on 3.9)? They're even more "stable and easy to work with" (except for .ssc files, oh god)

Because 3.9 works fine for me. What is this inclination to push me to 4 or 5? I don't have problems with 3.9 where I choose to use it, and I don't need most of the new features. All I needed was a simple question answered about an old version. Can we please let it be? The question has been answered satisfactorily for me. Thank you.

But you're using 3.95, the worst build ever... At least use 3.9+ Redux if you're that stubborn.

No one in their right mind is pushing you to use StepMania 4. But I digress...

It's not that people think it's wrong of you to use an unsupported fork of the StepMania project, it's that people think you're missing out. Fewer and fewer people will be using any ideration of 3.9, getting help like this will be harder and harder as time goes on. Try asking someone to help you troubleshoot a copy of DWI, anywhere.

Dude, if he wants to use it, let him use it. You don't need to force people to switch if they're comfortable with a build already.

"Noteskins !== Quality "
I just want to post this log and then I'll drop the subject because its just

Quote

Mon[07:13:09]am <Jousway> can someone please explain to my why 3.95 is so famous, like I just dont understand how it became the most used version
Mon[07:13:31]am <@shakesoda> it's not
Mon[07:13:37]am <@shakesoda> it is actually really not the most used
Mon[07:13:45]am <@shakesoda> excluding itg places where it makes sense
Mon[07:13:49]am <TheSchaf> maybe people asked that question so often that it got famous because of that!
Mon[07:14:03]am <@shakesoda> in all seriousness
Mon[07:14:05]am <Jousway> yeah well shakesoda, 3.95 users are basicly the "loudest" users I deal with
Mon[07:14:08]am <@shakesoda> "hey check out stepmania"
Mon[07:14:09]am <TheSchaf> i think i read similiar questions like 3 times now :p
Mon[07:14:18]am <@shakesoda> "here ya go *link to 3.95*"
Mon[07:15:01]am <TheSchaf> well what else is therE?
Mon[07:15:01]am <@TeruFSX> 3.95 has a crazy vocal minority of people using it
Mon[07:15:07]am <TheSchaf> 4 has been discountinued, right?
Mon[07:15:10]am <@TeruFSX> yeah
Mon[07:15:14]am <@TeruFSX> there's 5 and 3.9
Mon[07:15:16]am <TheSchaf> 5 has "alpha" at its name, so that might scare people
Mon[07:15:23]am <@TeruFSX> 3.95 isn't an alpha
Mon[07:15:28]am <TheSchaf> "alpha? oh, sounds like a lot of bugs, lets use old version!"
Mon[07:15:32]am <@TeruFSX> 3.95's some random-ass development version
Mon[07:15:35]am <TheSchaf> nah i mean sm-ssc 5
Mon[07:15:38]am <@TeruFSX> they pulled off the tree one day
Mon[07:15:45]am <@TeruFSX> and said YUP THIS WORKS
Mon[07:15:50]am <@TeruFSX> without checking anything
Mon[07:15:57]am <@TeruFSX> so it's less than an alpha
Mon[07:16:24]am <TheSchaf> my point is if someone goes to sm5 download page and reads "alpha 3" he might think thats something really buggy maybe not even playable yet
Mon[07:16:33]am <TheSchaf> which is ofcourse misleading because its based on old SM versions
Mon[07:16:51]am <@TeruFSX> that was the idea behind "preview", it doesn't sound as buggy imo
Mon[07:18:02]am <Jousway> 5 is less of an alpha than 3.95 if you ask me
Mon[07:18:40]am <@shakesoda> 3.95 is such an anomaly
Mon[07:18:48]am <@shakesoda> because it uh, didn't ever officially exist really
Mon[07:18:53]am <Jousway> 3.95 should have never existed
Mon[07:18:59]am <@TeruFSX> was it even a release actually
Mon[07:19:02]am <@shakesoda> it was never officially supported.
Mon[07:19:04]am <@shakesoda> no it wasn't
Mon[07:19:09]am <@TeruFSX> it wasn't even a nightly?
Mon[07:19:10]am <@shakesoda> the build was by smo guys
Mon[07:19:19]am <@shakesoda> axlecrusher or something
Mon[07:19:26]am <Jousway> yeah
Mon[07:19:28]am <@shakesoda> it was a random nightly
Mon[07:19:30]am <@shakesoda> basically
Mon[07:19:45]am <@shakesoda> and people found that it was pretty close to itg2 at some point

I just don't get it why when people get sm instead of sm5 they get a unsupported unofficial outdated broken version instead, and I, I really just don't get it.

So we reached a solution, and then you people (excluding Aeron and MaxX) decide to rip Rubes for using a form of Stepmania that works perfectly fine for him, very mature. I'd give you all negative ratings, but i'm not a cunt like that.

Edit: Disregard that last sentence, I had a change of heart.

Wow. Just wow. My intention was to get a simple question answered for a problem I'd already half solved myself. It wasn't supposed to digress to this, for real.

Oh, I know all about the nonsense that is DWI. I ran into a problem with .dwi files showing up in song folders, so I know about how much they are a pain with newer versions and even 3.95. Also, I already knew how to make my own custom mods, so it was just a matter of knowing that the section I needed is in every theme. I added my speed mods so long ago, I'd forgotten that it's like that in every theme. Heh, I fixed every theme I have in about 5 minutes with the solution.

I've been tooling around with SM since 2004, so I'm well aware that it's up to 5 now. I remember when 4 wasn't even a reality and you had to use 3.95, so I guess I just stuck with it. I really like 3.95. For all of the talk of instability with "forking versions," I'm perfectly serious when I say I've had no problems with this older version. It works very well for what I need it to do, which isn't much. Maybe one day I might seriously consider jumping up to 5. Maybe.

And, as a side note, I chuckled at the assumption of my gender. See my avatar and that my screen name is based off Ruby Heart from MvC2. Sorry to disappoint, but the "dude's" a lady. Blushing

Windows 7. Believe it or not, when I first started with SM, I had Win ME. That is quite possibly the worst OS ever made, with Win 95 and Vista running neck and neck for a close second. I'm almost certain I can run SM5 on my laptop and my desktop, since both use Win 7 and have more than an ample amount of RAM.

No one was "ripping" him. Seriously, just calmly expressing an opinion and telling why you should use a better version deserves so much negative score? Makes a lot of sense! I weren't being hostile at all (neither was Jousway)...

"Ripping" may not be the right word. "Persisting" is more accurate, and you're still doing it.

OP's question has been answered. Why this thread is still going I have no idea.

That's a different thing entirely, and I admit it - it wasn't the right thing to do, but I'm still kind of baffled about the -10 points thing.

Whatever, /thread, I guess.
