Just realized that I have been listening to this remix of Uh la la la not knowing that it was related to that one.
Staying on topic, I can barely read that chart. My eyes keep toying around with me when I see those jumps.

Was the 3-step jump actually part of the game or was that an error by a sim artist?

Actually in the game, definitely an error by KONAMI though.

Uh La La La is hard but for all the wrong reasons, same with XANADU. But there's a lot of songs that are really hard because they are either weirdly charted or on engines that can barely make them playable; there's some crazy shit on TRUE KiSS DESTiNATiON and DREAMS COME TRUE, as I recall, which are mostly a product of the engine.

My two choices for non-stupid-as-hell charts like Uh La La La, I'd say go to either Drop Out Heavy, or My Fire Heavy from 4th+. Not sure if HVAM Heavy counts, though, since it debuted on 5th mix CS JP if I recall.

One of the hardest old charts from before the speed mod was END OF THE CENTURY.
It is a wall of arrows containing some of the dumbest and most un fun patterns I've ever seen.

Also you want early mix 16ths? Play Ska a go go. On Standard.
^^ All of my this. ^^

Same goes with DHeavy

The DHeavy chart appears only in EXTREME as it was revived with the new chart.

"Give me a steady beat."
The pre-MAX song that dogged me for the longest time was LEADING CYBER.

IMO, I'll just have to go with the following five:

AFRONOVAHeavy - This is a song with a crazy and tricky run right after the intro. I could barely make it out by doing the "AFRONOVA walk", in which I could hardly master now. That's why it's my top choice for hardest pre-MAX chart ever.

Rhythm and PoliceHeavy and Furuhata theme's Heavy - Oh goodness, these charts are as crazy as AFRONOVA except it has 1/16th arrows in there and, without the modifiers, it would keep you off balance. I failed once because of Rhythm and PoliceHeavy.

LEADING CYBERHeavy - AS much as I love this song so much, the step charts are quite difficult to master back then. I could not stand having to go through the mid-section without keeping my eye off the screen during the near-end section of the chart. But it goes to show that without modifiers, if you face charts like these, you are more likely to be caught off guard.

DROP OUTHeavy - I won't end my points here without mentioning DROP OUT not because it was the fastest song back then, but because, let's just say it gives you the feeling of what MAX 300 would be like before DDRMAX. And yes, it was the fastest song back then with jumps and 1/8th streams that seem like 1/16th streams as shown in SUPER STARHeavy

Saints Go Marching -remix- Heavy on 1X speed

After all these years, how do people not know its "Saint Goes Marching"?

Anyway, hardest pre-max songs? Most of the hard 5th mix tracks got there on pure speed, like CSFILSM, Paranoia Eternal or Afronova Primeval. The 4th plus tracks actually mess with you a bit, weird rhythms, 16ths, etc. If we just go off of arcade mixes, I would say My Fire new heavy, Leading Cyber, Love new heavy, Furuhata's theme, and Drop Out.

Drop Out back then, even though it was only an 8, was the fastest track in the series and the run at the end was the longest anyone had seen. Furuhata's theme was fast, rhythmic, and had some good crossovers. Leading Cyber, Love and My Fire were mostly just hard to FC. As long as you know how to step, I would say Afronova, Rhythm and Polics, CSFILSM, etc are easier than these tracks.

^ The only reason Drop Out (And Paranoia Evolution, at that) were 8s was because there were no 9s in the DDR Solo series. Therefore, those songs were 8s that would have been 9s on any other DDR game.

If Graduisic Cyber AMD G5 Mix Heavy was on a DDR mix before DDR MAX, I'd probably put that up there as one of the toughest. Back then, that was probably the only chart with 16th runs like that.
It debuted in 3rd mix. Also you want early mix 16ths? Play Ska a go go. On Standard.

tbh, that still confuses me to this day; why would the Standard chart have more 16ths than the Heavy chart?

Isn't Paranoia Evolution still an 8? I don't recall them ever changing the rating to a 9 on later releases from DDRMAX onwards. Although, I do agree that it should be a 9.

Not too sure. But what I DO know is Paranoia Evolution is a 12 on new scale so it's basically an easy-to-average 9 on the old scale, pretty much on par with most of the songs in this thread.

I think it was still an 8 until the X-scale corrected it. It was harder than KCET mix, in which it was rated a 9.

As for hardest songs pre MAX, I would have to say Furuhata's Theme and Romansu No Kamisama were the hardest IMO. I also can see Lupin the 3rd '78, Radical Faith and Leading Cyber being hard, due to being on 1x and at 30 fpm. Lastly Xanadu is hard due to the fact that it doesn't go with the music at all.

Dancing Stage 1.5 (equivalent to 1st mix)

Not sure, but I think I found the simfiles:

Except they weren't 9s in any other DDR game, as Club Version introduced 9s. Paranoia Evolution and Drop Out are 8s in 4th Plus and 5th Mix, both of which are post-Club Version, therefore both games feature 9s. Just Drop Out was bumped up for 7th Mix doesn't mean its a 9 in every game with 9s. Hell, the Ultra Mix series features Drop Out as an 8, well after it was re-rated in 7th Mix.

Because when it debuted, it wasn't a Standard chart. It wasn't even a Trick chart back then. It was an Another chart, back in the day when Another didn't mean bat sh*t stupid, it meant Another. It was another chart. It had Basic, Another and Maniac, there was no rule back then that Another had to be easier or harder than Maniac, it was just Another.

"Never Gonna (pass) Trim"
Paranoia Rebirth, Trip Machine Climax, Rhythm and Police, are all givens. I'd say Drop Out is too, simple because of speed unheard of in a DDR game at the time + 8th runs and quarter jumps at said speed.

No, they were never done because we never got the real audio or graphics. The ones that were from DDRUK were essentially mock-ups.
