I've always wanted my videos in StepMania to "stretch" through the whole screen when I'm converting an HD video (1280x720) to 640x480 or 480x320 and still keep its HD goodness.
The problem is it always ends up looking like this:

Stepmania 3.9 only supports 4:3 resolution. To get full HD support, use Stepmania 5.
The suggestedHD widescreen resolution for 640x480 is 854x480, btw. I dunno about 320p.

A lot of other build use better resolution, not only SM5. I mostly only plays on oitg and i can go high (with 4:3 and 16:19).

I can't say for sure. It seems to run more efficiently than 3.9, but that's just my observation. I wouldn't suggest using 1280x720 as the size for your videos, though.
