Technically M300 SMMM is a boss. It's the Easy boss song of SN.
Also, 'boss' in a CS release refers to the final, hardest song in a mix, especially for the XBox games, which do not have stages in the main Game Mode. For example:
Universe : MAXIMIZER (Oni)
Universe 2 : Unborn (yeah, an 8' boss song)
Hottest Party : tokyoEVOLVED/Pluto the First (depending on location)
Mario Mix : Bowser's Castle
New Disney Mix : Sakura if we're able to unlock it, DoLL if not.

^no. a boss song has a special condition to play it and an indicator as to its status(red). no xbox game has debuted a new boss song, maximizer is a boss song, however it is not the boss song of UNI. maximizer is the boss song of extreme US and festival, so its a boss song in UNI just not boss song of UNI.
doll will not be the boss song of DCE unless there is something to indicate that it is a boss song. sakura will be if the unlock method exists, as it has boss status already. see my point about paranoia and trip machine not being the boss songs of 1st mix.
max300 SMMM got boss status in strike, as did G2.
examples of non ES boss songs:
TMS- 2nd to last stage of extreme AC and JP, ES of extreme US
PS- final stage of extreme
PSM- play paranoia bros(max2) backwards, it will be your final stage without oni steps
sakura- denoted as red in festival, however not the ES
outer limits- same as sakura
its also worth noting that while the solo games and 1st mix had ES, the conditions were different and there was no set song to play or special mods. it was just another stage to play, like in IIDX(however in IIDX if you meet certain conditions you could get the real ES).

Well, I dunno about you, n00b, but I consider PARANOiA and Trip Machine to be the Boss songs, not in the traditional sense now, back in DDR as they were the two songs that were "unlocked" as your final stage like most bosses were at that time (1990s), but I see where you're going with what you said and I kinda agree, though I don't really like to admit that as I am a big fan of Para and Trip series.

the thing is, in 1st, 2nd and 3rd mix all of the songs were assigned to specific stages. paranoia and trip machine just happened to be assigned to the last stage when playing on hard(at start up you pick easy, medium, and hard song sets like they did in SN1).
to a degree, yeah, i guess they are bosses but there wasnt any special requirement to get them or anything, you just play the game.

I'm only referring to 'boss' as 'the last unlockable song'. As the last unlock is usually the hardest, I thought that it could be called that.
