Get your free spiral knights helm for TF2. Just go play for an hour or so, if you don't like it, at least you got a free hat.

Speaking of TF2 and such, anybody have any of these items
Desert Marauder
Shahanshah
Bazaar Bargain
Villian's Veil
Sign of the Wolf's School
I will be willing to do some trading for it

I tried that wave out last night and it gets really straining once the mob of crit soldiers enter the map. Even max sentry health, firing speed, plus max wrench speed cannot guarantee my sentry will last.

So two and a half years later after this post, I'm bringing this back from the dead simply because Valve is adding competitive matchmaking. It's still a bit early to speculate such as CS:GO/Dota 2-style MM and rank system since details are thin but stay tuned with the updates on the first post.

So Valve is pushing a new update which Team Fortress 2 is getting the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive treatment, such as weapon skins, cases, a $5.99 Operation, and StatTrak™ weapons. First post got updated.

I caught word of this earlier and perused through the release/balance details. I think Valve overstepped their boundaries a little on this one. "Coat of paint" would be more appropriate than "treatment" in this case. While I enjoy both games and the experiences they offer, I prefer to keep my peas and mashed potatoes separate.
Not crazy about some of the balance tweaks either. The Loch-N-Load stats have been altered several times now, each revision making it worse than the last. The weapon was just fine with 20% damage boost + 2 rounds per clip. Some balances were totally warranted though like the Solemn Vow. It was always just a Bonesaw++.
The new maps look very nice for sure, but I feel like the game is becoming a little over-saturated. Don't get me wrong, they look great and knowing the guys at TF2Maps.net, they probably play nicely too. However, there's a growing selection of maps that will fall to the way side or off the server map rotation. Aside from that, I also found it humourous that they added Snowplow, after it was canned from the End Of The Line update for being "too complicated." Glad it got in though since it puts a new spin on the game modes.
I'm not thrilled overall about the update. I feel like Valve is scrambling a little to put another breath of life into Team Fortress. At this stage, I think these changes would have been more appropriate for another iteration. Would have been a perfect opportunity for them to fork the game, port it to Source 2 and experiment there. Sure it'd cause some backlash, but I'd speculate it would be no more than what is going on now.

Updated first post yet again with three videos, two by b4nny, and the slightly older one by Valve News Network, all involving the matchmaking. Apparently there is unused content when the last Scream Fortress update got released.
Append 7/6/15: New update inbound and a new video from Valve News Network explaining how competitive modes will do and the Pass Time mode going out of beta.
