I have discovered the powers of 7-zip and witnessed its wrath as it compressed a folder (6 GB to 5.5 Gb or something like that on ultra settings). Can I do the same to video files (compressed as Ultra and is a Solid archive) and expect a noticeable drop in the size or the archived file or am I just wasting my time?

Depends. Stuff that's already compressed do not recompress very well. This includes media files that use a codec for compression (.mp3, .avi's that use codecs, etc) I have taken raw .avi files and put compressed them into .rar files and gotten huge reductions (150MB -> 10MB). Unfortunately, it comes with the drawback of taking forever to decompress.

I actually can live with the long decompression time since they'll be put in another storage device and won't likely be accessed in a while. And what I was planning to compress were .avi files too. I haven't done a first hand test since I don't have winRAR installed in my system.

But I guess this also answers the belief that zipping/rarring a zip/rar archive does not save space.
