Okay so I think I may need a little bit of help. Recently I made a Universal Cobalt Flux adapter (wii, ps2, xbox) by stripping apart one of these.

http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/lbox/801817b.jpg

It was working completely fine, and then today, the back (bottom left) button stopped working and I could not figure out why. ALL the other buttons work perfectly fine, except for this one. I desoldered the connection from the board, and used a wire to join the contact point to the ground and it still didnt work o_0. What else was weird, was that when I connected the ps2 port of the pad to a ps2->usb dongle (one of these)

http://ak.buy.com/PI/0/350/225746989.jpg

the light for the connection lights up, meaning it's being detected and what not. I pull up the "Set up USB game controllers" panel in windows, and as usual ALL of the other buttons work. But when I try to test the bottom left button, it triggers both of the lights on the ps2->usb dongle to light up, and when I keep making contact the light "surges." Oh and none of the other buttons work after the "surge."

Think anyone could help me out in pinpointing the issue? I don't really want to buy another one and go through the same process and buying another universal pad to tear apart =/

sounds like it might be shorting and/or grounding out on something it shouldn't be. Pop open the panel and have a looksie, strip off the velcro pads and see if the wire's broken under them, or anywhere else obvious.
If not then I daresay it might be the control box being borked, at worst you'll just need another one, or if you don't intend to use it on other platforms then maybe a usb interface or controller.

So im building my bad and basically i just got a question...

Borrowing from Lluk design http://i1218.photobucket.com/albums/dd420/8ftmetalhead/Zenius%20-i-%20Vanisher%20home%20pad%20thread/Matrix/5.jpg

I am confused as to how the wires will be set up. Am I about to have 16 wires of ground, in which then I'll have to combine into one wire to go into the control box?

and then for example what about one arrow panel, I am going to have 4 different wires for active? that i'll have to combine into one wire to go into the control box?

If you're using 4 sensors per arrow, you wire them in parallel. You'll have two wires running into the arrow, then off that split two wires for each sensor, so you'll only end up with a pair of wires actually coming out of the pad.

as for when they come out of the pad, you'll then likely have to solder all the ground wires to a length of wire, then solder that to your ground point (if you've got a universal ground like on a softpad) because the weight of however many ground wires would potentially break the solder point.
This all said, you could solder all the ground wires together before they even make it out of the pad, then have a single length of wire coming out for ground.

Sorry for a possibly stupid question, but I've been wanting to build one of these babies for some time.

My uncle's a contractor, and has been for quite a few decades. He has soldering experience as well, so he's pretty much my go-to guy with this, and he's agreed to help me, provided I can get the funds.

There are a few questions I've been having. Here's the major one. I'll ask the other ones if I'm REALLY stuck.

I have an old Red Octane Ignition lying around. The thing looks like crap. It's been taking years of playing, by a player who is (to put bluntly) mediocre at DDR. Then again, I have no room to talk, but at least I'm better than him. :p

However, he picked his up used a looong time ago (probably in 2004 or something) and about a month earlier from this date, the arrows stopped registering. Specifically the back arrow. The other arrows work. Not the back one.

I think I know the cause of this.

http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/6541/20120831232822.jpg

'tis ripped. I can't say for sure but the middle-top half of the pad doesn't have that rip in it. Just the bottom.

Which got me thinking: could I take the sensors from a random softpad? I was going to use a control box from a PC pad, since it's primarily going to see Stepmania. But I might use the control box from the Ignition since I kind of want to actually use the EMS adapter I bought a few months ago. (I don't think there's any lag on it. I can AA some songs quite nicely.)

I'm not sure how to actually BUILD a sensor.

softpad sensors involve the use of tapeswitch sandwiches.
The tapeswitches make the cheap white bread that rips when you put your peanut butter on them, and the foam is the mangled mess of peanut butter that has gaps in it because the bread ripped, with inconsistent spread and lumps everywhere.

I doubt you could construct a sensor very easily, since the pads are literally a sheet of vinyl, tapeswitch, foam, another tapeswitch, more vinyl or grip rubber, sewn together at the edges and taped to a control box up front.
Replacing one part pretty much means replacing the whole thing.

Hey guys, I'm back! My pad's been working perfectly for a few months now, except I just ran into a pretty big issue.

What can I do to fix/replace this? =/

Damn, old topic but a good one.

I have made a few pads in the past, working on a new one now. Will be taking all measurements and making a nice guide, so something to look forward to.

Anyone working on anything at the moment?

Also anyone have any luck with bracketless pads at all?

old topic but I still keep an eye on it occasionally. I'd be here more often if people posted more, but they seem to do questions without discussion on AIJ and Stepmania's forum 59 (input adapters etc etc)

hey to each their own. if it works, it works. Just mind that it doesn't eventually rip and tear. At that point mod it more or just break out the duct tape. It's good enough for arcade pads, so use it on your home pads for that authentic arcade experience!Roll Eyes

Shocked Oh. My. Goodness.

I'm a 16 year old girl and I ordered a soft pad off of Amazon (made by DDR Game). It should be arriving in the next few days. This is my first DDR mat and I want to modify it and turn it into a durable metal pad. I'm going to need a LOT of help! I really don't want to mess anything up, but I'm willing to work and try my best.

I'm going to be checking back on this thread a lot in the next few days.

I want to finish this before summer, so I can play DDR all summer long! Laughing Out Loud Happy

depending on what sort of pad it is, I would either - staple, duct tape, whatever it to a plywood board (if it's one of those really thin ones) or get some carpet grip tape and sit it on that if it's a foam insert pad, and in both cases, use it till it breaks, then take the control box out of it and build a new metal pad.

Actually turning a softpad into a metal pad is not worth it at best or impossible at worst, you'd get a much better result by playing your heart out on what you've got and moving up to a hard pad later on. They can be made without too much fuss, especially since you're in the US.

It's a non-foam no-slip soft pad. Yes, I've heard of doing that too, but I wasn't sure. Thanks!!! I think that's what I'll do.

I'm not very heavy-footed, so I don't think i'll wear it out too soon xD. Thankyou!!

Well, with the new soft pad I got, I got a 1/2 in. ply wood to for my mat and just stapled my mat mat to it. If you want i can post pics tomorrow on where its stapled. For $10 or so (I don't really know, I had the wood laying around) It is great. I was gonna get a metal pad but this works out perfectly!

Really? Awesome! That'd be great if you could post some pictures. How long has that lasted you? I'm just worried about the arrows , and if they'll stop working. Because with soft pads, people always say how the arrows will stop working. I'm thinking that's just the wires though, and from constantly folding the pad to store it and stuff. But like some one else said, just put it to wood, and when that policy runs out, go to metal.

I'm so excited!!! Eeeh!! My mat should be arriving in the next couple of days!
