They should make an 8 panel mode (U,D,L,R,UR,UL,DR,DL) for this or for another stepmania. For the 4(single), 8(double) and 6(solo) on the left of the difficulty, the 8 panel would be like, 8-S, and 16-D. This is only considering the new DDR game with 8 panel mode though...
and also for drummania xg simulator... also uses 8 panel...

If you're on Windows 7/Vista, don't install the program into Program Files. (It's mentioned on the front page and in the installer for rc1.5.)
Funny thing you said that. I initially installed it to a folder on my desktop. It didn't work so I tried in program files (in which it didn't work either)I am still getting a crash as soon as I launch the .exe file.
It basically goes like this:
-I click the .exe file
-The loading window comes up (no text, just the splash image)
-Stays like that for about .25 of a second
-Crashes
I have also tried running it as admin and having the folder located elsewhere

They did such a thing before. The game was called TechnoMotion.Anyway, you can make almost any game mode for StepMania by making a noteskin for it.

P.S. There's no way to import high scores and similar data from 3.9 into 4.0 ssc, is there?

I suppose you could try copying Stats.xml from your 3.9 profile to a freshly-made profile from sm-ssc, but I don't know if it'll work, so no guarantees.

I suppose there would be a problem if all the data links to the song cache, which would have to be rebuilt? On second thought, I tried it once, and there's no support for other scoring systems like SN/SN2, is there?

Not currently.

with Lua, anything is possible. (sm-ssc's added Lua bindings make this possible, but not in a manner for "normal" people.)

Just some feedback/questions here as I tested some stuff out on this tonight.
I noticed it auto stretches background videos. Could I just edit the text file to stop this? Just wondering if there's a way to keep all background videos displaying at there proper ratio. And I noticed it edit mode I couldn't find a way to add another background shown in the simfile or add another background video to it. Just edit the .sm file again?
Also I noticed it can be picky with playing background videos. And some videos can make the arrows scroll real "choppy". It did this with a background video I used and I believe it's 720x480. Another 800x600 that was streched to widescreen was fine and the arrows fine. But the video is actually just widescreen with black bars on the top and bottom. I just did this so it would display in 3.9 properly.
Another song I added the black bars to make it 800x600 too and it doesn't play at all. All the videos do play fine in 3.9 as well.
And is there a way to display in letterbox 4:3 without sm-ssc stretching it to widescreen on my widescreen monitor? I tried 1024x768 and 4:3 but it's still stretched. Also I'm amazed this can run at 1920x1080 (p?). That's really amazing. Even if it is just upscale.
StepMania 3.9
Compiled Thu Oct 27 20:13:46 2005 (build 30756)
That's what I use for 3.9. And yeah I know it's old, I've tried 4, and I know about 3.9+.
sm-ssc v1.0 Release Candidate 1.5 | 20100723
Is the version I'm using for that as well.
Again just some feedback/questions. Didn't mean to offend anyone if I did.

Some of my videos won't even play at all; they only show up as black or gray. Has anyone else had this problem?

I've actually found sm-ssc doesn't stretch my videos, but it rather crops them. This is good.
Some videos don't play correctly, namely a certain couple from the SuperNOVA2 folder here. Freeway Shuffle comes to mind. I have the original before the shrink, and it's an artifacted mess. Though that's better than a black screen I guess.
Someone yell at shakesoda (or AJ).

I got 2 complains with SSC:
-Mini-holds are bugged.
-Some videos are to way off-set.
But, I have this Sm-SSC for Simfile creation, since its more easy to do the charts... When the RC2 comes out (and that means, no more bugged Mini-Holds) Im gonna change to this Stepmania...

odd. I can play all video files without no issues.
Under OPTIONS, select Appearance Options.
There are the BG Options.
Select OFF, in order to see the song videos.

sm-ssc v1.0 RC2 has been released.
Notable Changes
* Implement a hack for miniholds until a proper solution can be found. [AJ]
* Fix up alternate mappings for kb7 [shakesoda]
* Fix various NotesLoaderKSF issues (|D| tag handling) [Daisuke Master]
* Allow editing of a Song's #GENRE tag within the editor. [AJ]
* ScreenNetEvaluation: Replace hardcoded rainbow effect with UserTier02OrBetterCommand; Added Difficulty, Steps, Score, Grade, and PlayerOptions params to UpdateNetEvalStats message. The beginning of custom-themable online stuff begins.
* ScreenNetSelectMusic: Stop the music when reaching a section; Changed MusicWheel metrics to read from OnlineMusicWheel instead; Started to port SampleMusicPreviewMode from ScreenSelectMusic.
* ActorSound: Fix Play() so that stop and pause are usable. [Daisuke Master]
* Allow Allow GraphDisplay Line to be themed via metrics. [AJ]
* Add roll and twirl from OpenITG [vyhd]
Grab it from http://code.google.com/p/sm-ssc/ as usual :)
