hp pavilion xt963
I was thinking of a couple of 256 MB RAM to upgrade the computer (2 of them for a total of 512 - not much compared to today's machines, but better than 128), and a graphics card (possibly PCI?). I'm trying to make this computer last, but I don't know if that's possible. Also, can the processor be upgraded on the motherboard of xt963?

I'd definitely say it's not worth it to upgrade that computer at all. Do you have any sort of budget in the $300? You could definitely throw a computer together for that much that will blow that current computer away.
EDIT: Oh, I remember seeing a computer that was about $150 as a barebones, lemme dig it up for you. It's got a pretty old integrated graphics chipset but the processor is amazing compared to what you currently have.

And here it is. Yeah, a 6150 integrated graphics chip won't get you very far, but it's probably much better than you're used to. Just move the hard drive over and reactivate XP with a phone call

I'm aware of this, though I can't run certain actors in SM4 or ssc (Movie backgrounds, primarily) without a crash and I keep on hearing it's my Intel-based card, which is a sucky one despite it being stable. I don't know much PCI cards, since that's the only option if it was an upgrade.

AMD processor? Will Stepmania have issues on AMD-based types?

PCI graphics cards are a bit expensive since not many manufacturers produce a large quantity of them anymore which drives up their price quite a bit (supply and demand sucks sometimes), meaning it isn't very cost effective to upgrade just a graphics card. Upgrading a processor is a tad annoying in this case since the processor socket type (the thing you plug the processor into) isn't known and it's hard to tell if the BIOS of the motherboard itself supports newer processors of whatever CPU socket you have (socket 478 I'd guess, but if you want to know for sure, google CPU-Z and run it to see what socket you have).
The actors and movie backgrounds may be processor related since your CPU is a 1.2 GHz Celeron, which I'd guess is about 6 years old.
AMD processor? Will Stepmania have issues on AMD-based types?
No, it will run. AMD and Intel processors just have differences in speed and architecture but has no effect on the user's end (besides speed, but most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference).
