Wasn't sure whether to put this in Simulation or Videos.
Does anyone know of a good program to record videos of StepMania? A co-worker recommended WeGame, but that seems to be catered more towards more commercial games like Call of Duty and such and didn't seem to want to work with StepMania.
And no, I'd rather not use HyperCam. I've seen terrible lag issues with that thing, not to mention, the UNREGISTERED HYPERCAM line I see on so many videos is irritating as hell.

Fraps is pretty good, although not free. I'm sure you can find a torrent of a full version somewhere though.

It really depends on whether or not you want a free program or something you have to pay for.
I use Fraps, but you do have to pay for it in order to get the full program (demo only records 30 secs). I'm sure there are other programs that are free and work just as well but for me Fraps does the job fine.

I don't mind if it's not a free program. Like pie said, torrenting is definitely an option.
All right, if you guys say Fraps is good, I'll have to give that a try when I get off work. Thanks for the quick response, guys.

I've FRAPS'd loads of games; haven't used it on StepMania but I see no reason why it'd be any worse.

fraps, however, consumes a lot of eye-popping mem size of about a gigabyte per vid made

True. A minimally-intensive theme like Techno Fiend helps framerates a lot, too.

I use Fraps for recording Stepmania and BM IIDX videos. But those are originally encoded as Raw format so you have to convert those those big file sized videos to compressed format (I use AVS Video Converter, choose Youtube Video format and then customize setting for frame rate to original). Here's my output:

I agree. Those steps look fun sillybear.
On topic... I use Fraps to record videos, then use Any Video Converter (Free) to convert them to MP4 and upload to youtube.

FRAPS it is for me. I do have another screen-capture program, SnagIt, but I can never get it to just pick the audio from the sound card (sp?) like what others do and insists on using the microphone to record sound instead.

If you're using Windows 7, you may need to enable "Stereo Mix".
- Right Click on the volume control systray icon
- Choose "Recording Devices"
- On the window that appears, right-click on the list and check "Show disabled devices". Stereo Mix should appear.
- Enable it and set it as default device.
- Click on OK and you're set. Now your recordings will have "what you hear" as audio instead of the microphone.

Make sure also to disable all microphone devices in recording device before recording. Just enable them back when needed (especially for voice chat).
