So yeah, it appears my family realized it was high time for a new cpu, and as usual, I am kind of in charge of choosing/configuring it. I am not looking to build, I probably could and I know someone who'd help, but I'd rather just buy online. Pretty much any brand is up in the air, I checked out Dell, HP, and Apple so far. My family likes Macs, but at the same time, they know the hardware comes at a price, so I'd rather have a good Windows then a overpriced bragging machine. I am looking at it for some possible light gaming (able to run things at decent settings well, something such as COD 4 or whatever) and definitely editing (both pictures and videos) are a must. HP so far seems to be the best bang for the buck with this: http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/5622/63495022.jpg (this setup looks pretty nice to me, but some opinions would be great)
Dell was overpriced compared to them, and Apple obviously was too. I wouldn't mind looking at other brands and if you have one I should check out, point me in that direction if you could

Go to your local SAMS CLUB and buy an HP. Only HP laptop batteries suck, everything else is pretty good.

Don't have one that close buy, but I could probably manage. Would what they have there be comparable/better than what I built? (and is what I built even good enough for what I listed)

It looks really good (except 64 bit vista, oh well ), but get some speakers. Or if you already have some then I'd say you are good to go. The only thing that could top that would be a blu-ray drive (around $150 more) and this computer would already have an hdmi port on the back for the monitor or lcd.

No need for a BD drive, got a PS3. Speakers I have, and I'll toss out Vista with 64-bit 7, thanks for the input, if anybody else has anything to add/suggest/confirm, please do.

If you toss out vista 64 you will HAVE TO DOWNGRADE TO 3 GB OF RAM. Yes, major suckage.
Gaming (FPS) is better on 64-bit, but SM. It's o.k. but not fab.

First off, Dell, like you said, is overpriced, and their customer support is, IMO, crap. Second, those specs are great for $1500 (before rebate). It's perfect for all your needs. IMO, one thing you should replace is the MS Works with MS Office 2007 Home & Student Edition (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). However, I'm not sure if COD4 would run under Vista x64 (64-bit), due to my lack of experience with 64-bit hardware and OS. It runs very well with these specs under Vista x86 (32-bit), just not sure under Vista x64.
BTW, COD4 runs very well on my laptop with only 2GB of RAM, but I had to remove it due to it taking up 8GB of HDD space.

Sweet, gaming should work well on this then. Anybody happen to have an estimate for how many FPS I could get off Crysis? (not looking to play it, just curious), and would this thing be good enough for running a PS2 emulator and dumping graphics? And as for the Office thing, I have a couple licenses left over on the disc we purchased.

Honestly, if it's cheaper, go for no more than 3 gigs of RAM. I've honestly not noticed a difference beyond 2 gigs because of how Windows does its paging. You'd be better off toning down the RAM and bumping up the video card and HD access speed, that's where your real buckling will happen.
Gaming is only better on 64bit if the game takes advantage of 64 bit processing. No program will will suddenly work better just because of a an increase in processor data size. This is why there's Vista 32bit and Vista64bit. 64 bit Vista will work with 64bit data sizes.

You don't have to; the OS just won't recognize anything over 3 and a bit.Building is definitely always cheaper and more customizable, I would highly recommend it over any preconfigured setup.

That look like an excellent setup i'm finally getting a new one too and i need a little help myself. My mom is buying a new computer by Friday or Saturday. The machine we picked out from best buy is$500. I remeber that it has an intel core 2 duo processor, Vista Home Premium 64-bit, 6gb of ram, 250gb SATA HDD(500gb if i cound my 250 external HDD), 15-in-1 card reader and usb ports(I don't remember how many), and i believe an 17 in' monitor and the graphics idk. I believe that the the Intel quad core version is $100 more. It comes with Norton too, but we might swap that out for Trend Micro or Avast!.
But, I'm wondering how well does SM or Open ITG run on Vista 64? I know this is good enough for PS CS3 or 4. And does anyone know if FL Studio 8 will run on that system thanks.
