"Google Chrome = Win."
OK I have a few questions regarding operating systems:

1. Can you basically put any operating system on any computer (ex. can Mac OS X 10.5.6 Leopard be put on a Dell or HP computer or does it have to be specific hardware)?

2. Is there an easier way to reset an administrator password without having to reinstall the operating system? I found my late grandfather's old laptop for which he told me the admin password, but it doesn't work.

3. The above-mentioned laptop has, for some odd reason, no internal CD drive. How reliable would an external CD drive work? I don't want it to be a waste of money if I can't make it work.

Thank you anyone for your help.

I can only answer question 1.

Usually it has to be specific hardware, but with Mac OS now running on Intel-based systems, I don't know. My above statement applies to the Intel Itanium series, they work so differently from the regular variants that Microsoft issues a version of Windows Server for ordinary Intel processors and another one for the Itanium series. A 64-bit version of XP was also released on Itanium before being dropped on the Itanium series and re-titled as the x64.

Thank you so much, Lord Toon!

Now that I think about this, I'm not entirely sure. As a rule of thumb you can put Linux and Windows on just about anything.

You need to know the administrator's password to change it.

They work fine, from my experience, just don't get the cheapest one you can find. If you want it to last, spend a little.

What's the make of the laptop? What OS is it currently running?

Alright, Windows and Linux and what not will run on just about anything. Windows can run on a Mac, but I am not 100% sure about Linux, I am sure it can be virtualized, but not 100% sure about a full install, never had a reason to look into that. Mac OSX is strictly made to run on Mac hardware, but that hasn't stopped hackers from porting it to other hardware. (see hackint0sh), hackint0sh isn't as reliable and is obviously not supported by Apple, but if you want Mac to run on your PC hardware (again, only works with some), give it a shot.
There probably is a way of resetting the admin password, but I don't know off the top of my head. It may involve a live cd of linux and a program off it, but if I were at that stage I'd personally just reinstall Windows.
Lastly, external CD drives should work just fine.

"I'm honestly pissed off."
A windows install CD should have a rescue option of some sort that you can use to reset the password without having to do a full reinstall. I've never had to do it myself though.

What operating system is it? Also do you have the CD or Disc that came with it?

It's Windows XP Professional, and no I do not have the disk.

Update
I completely forgot that I bought an external CD drive last summer and it works with the laptop!

Now all I need is a new Windows XP CD for my birthday. Unfotunately on Amazon it's like $177.99. Oh well, I'm sure I'll get plenty of money.

I think I forgot all about the drive because when I tried it I didn't realize at first that it needs 2 USB ports to give it enough power, and I didn't realize the laptop had more than 1 (which it does). Yes, it's a very weird computer. It's a Dell Latitude D4000 or something. Anyways now I know it'll work and I now can have my own laptop for the time being (meaning until I officially get my own brand new one in a few years)!

You know you can just get torrent if you have a XP serial code like what i did. I got a WinXP Corporate torrent and my friend had a serial code and he just gave it to me. Wink

Torrent is so gay IMO and definitely not safe. Risk of malicious items is present when downloading ANYTHING shared across the Internet.

Also, isn't getting that kind of licensed software on torrent illegal anyways?

Downloading Windows is not illegal; cracking a serial number is. The serial number is all that counts; is there a sticker on the bottom of the laptop with a number?

Yes there is. So technically, what kp_centi did was illegal, because his friend gave him a serial code. Tongue

Er, corporate editions are licensed to corporations, giving it to an individual outside the corporation is a violation of the license agreement. Just saying.

Owned.

Yes, kp_centi, what you did was illegal. Despite the fact that the serial code may be able to be used more than once, it's a violation of copyright law. Would you like it if somebody reproduced illegal copies of your software?

But he's only in 6th grade guys... so I suppose we should give him a break. Just don't do stuff like that, it could potentially get you in trouble. And if not you, your parents could get into legal trouble because they let you do it.
