God, i hate FCAT...it's pointless and useless (only makes the schools get richer and s*** )
...thankfully i passed all parts of it (with a perfect "6" on the FCAT Writes )

So what happens if you fail it? Are you then beat up and abused?

I haven't heard of it either. If I had to venture a guess, I'd assume it's some kind of standardized test for schools.

It is...in the state of Florida. I remember my cousin down there telling me about this a couple years back.Post #8 · Posté à 2009-03-28 07:51:16am il y a 15 années

We have AIMS over here in Arizona, which is very similar. Luckily I blew that thing out of the water.

That is correct. Before Bush - the younger brother - there was the Sunshine State Standardized Test. That test had little weight in deciding the student's future, for lack of a better word. The FCAT was proposed by Bush and was put into effect. If you fail it, you get held back. For high school it's much worse as they retain your diploma if you fail the FCAT.
Luckily, I graduated before they implemented the Science and Social Studies version of the FCAT as the FCAT was originally math reading and writing.
And the test is a complete waste of money. I have more information on how this test is a major waste but it's not coming to me at the moment.

Here in NY, there are what the State Education Department calls Regents exams. They're only taken during your high school years. When I was in high school (I graduated in 2001), the standards were being phased in, the passing grade changing every year when incoming freshmen entered high school. Now these days, a high schooler must pass 5 (I think) exams with at least a 65 to graduate.
Personally, I think standardized testing is completely useless. This includes the SAT and all those other exams needed to even get to college. I never took the SAT, and I have my Associate's degree, and going for my Bachelor's sometime within the next few years (I'm taking time off to re-evaluate my options).

sucks for you guys that are still in public schools. It looks like our state doesn't want you to learn anything outside of helping your teacher keep a job.

It was much the same when I graduated. Regents exams are probably the stupidest thing the New York State education boards have ever thought up - no colleges look at them (not even NYS colleges!), teachers tend to teach with the sole focus of having students pass them, students still can't even pass them, etc.
And since I went to community college before attending a four-year, nobody looked at my SAT scores either. lol uniform assessment tests. In fact, I could have done horrible in high school and still ended up where I am now, all scholarships intact - just drop out of HS and go to CC

I skipped the SATs altogether. After graduating high school, I took 6 months off, went to a Community College, graduated in three years (because I switched majors halfway through). Was working on my Bachelor's, but hit financial and personal snags.

We have ISTEP+ here (no idea why there's a + there...). It goes from 3rd to 8th grade, then sophmores have to take the GQE. There's also state-mandated Core 40 (the state's diploma system) tests in Algebra I, Biology, and English 10.
But this past ISTEP test has gotten a little controversy due to it possibly being rigged for some students... Read that however you want to.

Back when I was in school, the test was usually stuff you would have learned 2 years earlier.

Florida schools can really be retarded. FCAT science would give you a 3/5 for getting 5 out of the 42 answers wrong even when the other 37 are correct. -_-
I had to take the SAT for bright futures, but at least I'm going to FSU next year so I'll only need to retake it to move my 75% Bright futures to 100%. (I got a freaking 1200 out of the 1270 needed for my reading and math scores together) I should have taken the ACT because I got a 33 on my practice one in class. >>
Anyways, I go to a college prep school, so our teachers give us free tutoring due to that most of the students actually wish to learn and have fun at school. (CLASS OF 11 SCP WOOT )

Up here we had multiple tests we had to take. For Grades 3 and 6 we had EQAO which evaluated us in the Mathematics and English Language. Then for grade 5 we had this strange one that had the letters 'CAT' somewhere in the acronym which evaluated us in English and Math again.
Then in Grade 9 there was a Math EQAO which counted towards 1% of our final grade (lol probably to make people actually try on these things). Lastly we had a Grade 10 literacy test which was a requirement towards the diploma. It was funny to see how much effort they put into providing lessons on how to approach the thing.
I find all these tests just a waste of time and paper. The only reason we write these thing is so the government can dish out larger portions of the budget to schools that obtained higher grades.
