I'll play a 2D sonic any day over a 2D Mario game. As for 3D, Mario.

Sonic! Sonic all the way.
Hey the Sonic Adventure series were good 3D Sonic games. Ever since then, Sonics been absolutely terrible though. I think it's partly due to Yuji Naka leaving Sonic Team.

That is right, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. They have new new characters (Please let them not be in the others games as well ) Shade is the new big one. And there were rumors about "Dexter" being Amy's boyfriend

Being the Nintendo fanboy that I am, I would of course have to say Mario.
I was never that into Sonic. Mario games have a charm that Sonic games don't, and are generally more fun. The levels are more interesting (probably because you can actually see them and there are more secrets to find) and it hasn't gotten worse from console to console.
Also, shouldn't this be in the general gaming discussion?
