Does the flash drive have to be 2GB or can it just be 1GB as well?

Any size 2 GB or smaller should work, unless it's one of the random types that don't work.

my 16GB Sandisk Cruzer works find on an ITG machine. Just don't expect to cram it with songs as it only reads a finite amount

1GB and 2GB flash drives should be fine. If the flash drive is 4GB or more, cabs tend to read fewer songs from it, load the songs slower, and NoName/"Bad address" the card after fewer rounds. (You're limited to ~25 simfiles anyway.)
Also, make sure you have the correct folder setup (starting at the root of the drive, In The Groove 2\Songs\[song folders, not group folders]). If that doesn't work, you may need to remove the simfiles and dry run the flash drive one round, to let the ITG cab set up the folder structure itself.

I've used a 512MB drive with ITG2, crammed with 40 songs. The machines only read the first 25 though...

Remember in ITG that the ports are only USB1 (and support only FAT16/FAT32, no NTFS or exFAT)

I use an 8gig one and it seems to work fine, realistically you really don't need one bigger than 512 mb though (limit is 100 MB I believe, although with the 50 song absolute limit as well it's unlikely you'll get that high).
