I'd just get both MAX and MAX2. Both games' songlists are great, but some songs are shared between the two. You can readily find MAX2 brand new in stores for $20. For MAX, I usually see it in the used section at GameStop (at least 4 copies in each of four stores around here) for about $25.
When I bought the two games in 2004, I bought them brand new for $45 combined. Shame how the prices haven't changed since.

Why buy the game when you have stepmania? Either wa, just get Max 2, its a greatest hits now, so it goes cheap for new. ($20) Idk, I have Max2, Supernova 2 and Extreme... I hate them all, but Max 2 is my least hated. Really, just get your pad hooked up to stepmania, its worth it.
That and US releases just have to many licensed songs for me to enjoy, that and i just wnt to play ddr, not spend time unlocking the good stuff. But again, Max 2 has a easy way to unlock stuff, and decent songs? What am i saying, it blows except for like 10 songs, stepmania may not be that good as a simulation of a ps2 version, but at least you dont have to deal with songs like Secret Rendezvous or what ever... That song is terrible.... And the US version doesn't even have Waka Laka, so whats the point (aside from Maxx Unlimited?)

What's the point?!
Why, to collect, of course!;)
Funny because I've never hated EXTREME US until I bought EXTREME2...*cue flashback scene*
See, my first song that I ever played was Brick House on Ultramix 2 so the transition from Ultramix 2 to EXTREME wasn't bad as the song wheel looked similar, and they shared a couple of songs (321 STARS, A, DROP OUT) so I liked it.
But after buying the other games and playing DDR EXTREME at the arcade, I immediately started to see the flaws in my beloved first DDR game when I went back to play it. (EXTREME was my first DDR game; my cousin's Ultramix 2 is what prompted me to buy a game of my own)

My first post on this site!!!
yaaay me!!!
But heres my opinion:
Both MAX and MAX2 did pretty well to replicate that "arcade-like feel" to them.
To give you a good idea, the majority of the songs on MAX are from 4th, 5th, and 7th mix. The one thing that really irked me is that annoying little "play 500 songs to unlock drop the bomb sys SF mix"...
Then with MAX2 the few licenses it had did very well, to go with that whole "80's" theme that MAX2 seemed to sport. MAX2 also had some really good 9's put in there, like tsugaru, twighlight zone, and especially so deep, oh and lets not forget break down! I was also elated to find that MAX2 conatin a decent handful of EXTREME songs on it.
So as much as i personally love my share of EXTREME US's simply being loved, pink rose, music, and tsugaru apple mix, i would wait to get this mx until after you've gotten max or max2. Don't rule extreme out entirely, just get the other two first and then you can look for EXTREME US for cheap on amazon/ebaylater on. But i also agree with whoever said "get MAX first, because max is becoming incresingly hard to find, even used.
and there's my two cents! hope it helped! ;)

If you want to find any game, go on Red Octane's site, but Extreme is also a greatest hits, so new it goes for $20 as well.
Lol, I guess so, but its just painful playing some of these songs for me X( What people should do is track down ITG for the ps2, that would be worth it!
Scratch that, RedOctane's site just has the Max + 2 Ignition Dance Pads bundle, so ignore that part

It all depends on what you like. Myself, I think nearly every song in ITG PS2 is pretty lousy. I mean the music. It's just really lackluster stuff - phoned in. Go figure. Note that I'm not a 9 level player. I top out at 7's and perhaps a handful of 8's, if any. As far as just downloading sim files instead of buying the games, does anyone else have a problem with doing that? I think you should buy the games. If I have the songs on a retail copy of the game I'd be fine with downloading simfiles for those songs and playing them via stepmania (though I haven't bothered to do that, seeing how I have them on the original games.) Also any original stuff that people have created that isn't just a rip of someone elses work. I actually don't know what is available for stepmania - is there a lot fan made *original* music for it?

If you want the full DDR experience on SM, you have to buy a pad anyway. As for original songs, there are a lot of fan remixes, but none of them hold a candle to what you see on DDR. They mostly loop samples from DDR songs.

Actually, I already play Stepmania. I have all the Otaku mixes ^.^;;;
Well to try to help you guys out more I'll tell you this:
My favorite DDR game so far is SuperNOVA2. My least favorite is Hottest Party.
Some songs I like from previous versions are DoLL, Baby's Tears, Nijiiro, Mugen, Peace (^.^)v, Miracle Moon, Butterfly, Golden Sky, STARS, Freckles and Angelus
I'm not sure if that helps or hinders you >.<

By that I would suggest EXTREME as it has Love Sugar, PINK ROSE, Firefly, Memories, and V.
MAX has true...(trance sunrise mix)
MAX2 has...uh...Tsugaru?
But as I said before, buy MAX if you intend on getting them all as it is becoming rare to find it in a store.

Well after researching prices and availability I've decided to get: *drumroll please(
Dance Factory
=P
I know some of you will say I'm making a horrible decision that will end the world. But you know what? I live on Pluto.
Anyway, thanks to everyone who replied and in the future when I get bored with Dance Factory I'll come back to this thread, re-read all the posts and make my decision again.
Thanks!!!

Aren't the up and down arrows switched on Dance Factory? I also heard that it's off sync after a minute or two.

You have got to be joking. I've heard that it doesn't generate anything harder than a 4.
Oh well, report back to us to confirm the rumors we've heard.
