Some people use heavy rubber shoes while some feel more comfortable with their flip-flops. I noticed that I get higher scores when I'm wearing my Chucks. There is a science behind this, but I haven't quite figured it out yet. So...
What footwear do you use when playing DDR?

Um...my tennis shoes? I don't know how effective that is, though. My old ones didn't create much of an "assist tick" on the metal pad, but I haven't tried my new ones.

Running shoes are comfortable for me when I'm playing on a metal pad, I just use my socks on the home dance mat (but my skills are lower in my home )

Luckily I kept my old running shoes that I formerly used as everyday wear. They are so worn, but still perfect for DDR.

I play with socks, whether I'm at the arcade, or at home on my CF. Just stay up on the balls of your feet, and don't go down on your heels and it won't hurt. And don't step on the screws, though that should go without saying.

I wear very heavy skateboard shoes. because when I play DDR, they get beaten up very fast. Thats right folks, I had a pair of tennis shoes and they were ruined within one week.
Skateboard shoes are pretty heavy compared to other shoes, however when you hit the panels, it makes a loud slap noice, so you can time yourself correctly. They also can take a beating and still be ok. Like right now, the back of my skateboard shoes are already ruined, and I have had that pair for 3 months.
A pair of shoes for me lasts an average of 3~5 months, and then I get new ones.

Nothing, and by that I'm only referring to my feet, though I could play naked since I only play at home on my Ignition 3.0 pads. My wife and kids would probably object, though. I've never been able to get hang of the arcade machines, partly because I just get so nervous in front of others in public, but also because the arcade pads are exactly the opposite of the Ignition 3.0 pads and the recessed panels aren't recessed very much. I can never figure out where my feet are on them (I'm opposed to using handrails). Right now I'm, and this is really sad, not playing at all - sprained my ankle a few weeks ago (not from DDR - fell while running down steps). Sprains take too long to heal. It does give me some time to explore Beatmania, though....

Yeah, the downside of arcade play for me is that 1/4" recess makes me miss when I would have hit on a CF, because I was hitting near the edge, instead of the center.
As for the sprained ankle, you must not be as heavily addicted as me, or you'd be playing on the ankle in spite of whatever pain the sprain adds.

I use my new Adidas, they have a pretty flat bottom so they are nice to play in. Really comfy to, but i can play in anything really, except socks. One time i was about to play Sakura and my shoe was untied, so i kicked it off nad played in one shoe/one sock, lol, not a good idea XD .

(quote) but also because the arcade pads are exactly the opposite of the Ignition 3.0 pads and the recessed panels aren't recessed very much. I can never figure out where my feet are on them (/quote) I don't mind too much as long as it's not flat. If it's flat, there's no distinct boundary and I can easily drift off the arrows (this includes the soft pad bundled with the game).
(quote) (I'm opposed to using handrails). (/quote)
Same here. I could use them, but I'd probably be restricted rather than supported.
I write the quote that way so I don't have to worry about the complicated tags.

I learned on a flat soft pad with *no* boundary, so it's not too much of a problem for me. I do prefer the easy to feel boundary the CF has though.

I feel the same way, and when I tried using the bar a bit last week, it did restrict me in crossovers, but it made step jump and mine filled crap like Solina much easier. Also made it easier to do 16ths, even at 138, due to not having to deal with balance. I still prefer to play no bar, but I see why it helps so much on hard/stupid stuff.

But it's not that hard to split it up right, with the quotes looking right. And you can use preview to make sure it'll come out right.

Breadbags.
Also, I WILL NEVER HAVE THE SHOES
Honestly though I'm using a pair of Reebok Versatrainers, a model now out of production.
