There are lots of themes for Stepmania 3.9, some are based on the DDR versions and others are not.
I actually use 2 themes, to play SM:
Takuya`s DDR SuperNOVA theme BETA 2
Cyberia Style 2.6
I use them a lot, but I have other themes, too.

I use the SMMAX2 all the time, it's quick and requires less loading and strain on the computer. It's useful when you're working with simfiles and have to switch from EDIT and GAME mode all the time.

I use takuya20's DDr 7th MAX 2 theme, but I don't know if there is a DDRMAX2 North American theme (In Stepmania Things the theme is not there)

I use DDR Extreme theme and sometimes 5th Mix theme both are good as they load quicker than some of the other themes out their on the WWW

I use the In The Groove 2 theme now because, when you're in gameplay, you can see a bar that tells the song Duration

I’m shocked everyone likes the Happy Sky theme. The R.E.D. and DistorteD themes I think are much better.

Have you tried Pop*Candy 2? Very cool theme. 8)(Even for a 60MB theme
