It's a free version of Quake 3 Arena run through your web browser. The site keeps track of all your statistics and stuff. It also gives you a ranking that they use to match games for you (though you can join any game).
Just make an account and install the plugin which implements Q3 into your browser (sorry mac users, not for you yet). Then go through the intro practice round thing to get your rank. Don't worry; the plugin supports fullscreen.
You can also get friends and stuff. There's also a bunch of achievements that you can get...sort of like the 360.
And yes, this is supported by id so it's legit.

I've been playing it so much lately (mainly out of boredom). It brought back memories of back when I actually bought Q3 Arena when it came out. Interesting that it's free now.
By the way, the script to get to the homepage may take a bit to load up, so if your browser freezes, give it a minute.
