3 years. Got to 7s in my first month or so, stopped for a year, came back and started moving up from 7s.
And 8-dan is not the biggest wall in IIDX, Kaiden is WAY bigger. Unlike other dans you can't start seriously attempting Kaiden right after beating 10-dan especially if you cleared a 10-dan that was before Red.
Hell I beat DJT CS Kaiden almost a year ago now and for the other Kaidens I can either only get to the 3rd or last stage. Then again I haven't been playing that intensively since last year so go figure :/.

I've been playing for only about six months. I got into it over the school year because I was finally able to get a PS2 that could play the games, and I didn't have to suffer through the American CS release anymore. I haven't been playing much recently, though.
